I was Alto during the Festival Lessons and Carols. It was a pleasure to sing this beautiful masterpiece!
    Dir. Tom Stehle
    Schola Cantorum
    December 11, 2011
Biebl was born in Pursruck, now part of Freudenberg, Bavaria, in 1906. He studied composition at the Musikhochschule in Munich. Biebl served as Choir Director at the Catholic church of St Maria in München-Thalkirchen from 1932 until 1939, and as an assistant professor of choral music at the Mozarteum, an academy of music in Salzburg, Austria, beginning in 1939, where he taught voice and music theory.
Biebl's best-known work is his Ave Maria (1964), which sets portions of the Angelus as well as the Ave Maria. The piece was brought to the United States by the Cornell University Glee Club in 1970. The ensemble met Biebl during a recording session in Frankfurt while on a tour of Germany. Conductor Thomas A. Sokol was given a number of Biebl's works, premiering them after returning home. The Ave Maria quickly gained popularity, most notably after becoming part of the repertoire of Chanticleer. Originally scored for male voices, after it became popular the composer himself rearranged Ave Maria for SATB and SSA choir as well.

This is the first hymn I believe that has genuinely made me cry in awe of beauty.

I was married in this cathedral in 2005, by Monsignor Jameson, who you see seated at right in red. It was a blessing and an honor to be married there! The choir there is absolutely angelic and they sang Biebl's "Ave Maria" beautifully.

my university did this song in the 90s - and this is the first one i've come across online that comes anywhere close to it. From the importance of the female section to the gradual cascendo in multiple areas. you all did a wonderful job. the only thing my group had on you - we had a second level, where our conductor put the females - and he didn't have them join until the second verse....so when they started, it sounded like angels coming down from heaven. I still get goose bumps to this day thinking about it.

My men's Gregorian chant group sings this, but just the four men's parts. Even in that truncated form it is nice. However, having the mixed voices is superior. Nicely done, and what a moving experience it must have been for those souls present.

St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington is gorgeous, beautiful, and President Kennedy was buried from St. Matthews as was his brother, Senator Edward Kennedy.

Absolutely perfect! I recorded this as well but my sounds quality was not so good. I imagine that this is exactly how the Virgin heard the Angel's voice. (Only in Aramaic). Very sublime and pretty nigh perfect in my estimation!

Thank you for sharing this! I sang it often when I was a section leader at Holy Trinity in Georgetown, and it has become one of my favorite pieces (I actually prefer the SATB version).
I did not realize that Professor Sokol brought this piece to America! As a former Cornellian and Cornell Chorus veteran, this gives me special joy!
Your performance is gorgeous. Greetings to all at St. Matt's!

You’re welcome. I sang the Alto part of this song during the Singers Festival at Saint Matthew's Church. It was an honor and privilege to be around all of the amazing singers. Ave María is my favorite song and memory!

This is the finest rendition I've ever heard. I suppose the one who posted this was part of the chorus? No doubt there was a little help from the cathedral, but this choir sounds like one twice its size.

This is a much more accessible key, isn't it? I always hated when we sang it and I had to screech.
