  • Thornton-le-Dale or Thorton Dale is a village located about three miles east of Pickering and on the edge of the North York Moors. The name of the village is believed to have been given by the Angles and would indicate that the area had many thorn bushes. Place names ending in ton are of Anglo-Saxon origin and mean an enclosed settlement, the ‘le’ part of the name is most likely a Norman addition and may have been used to help distinguish places with similar names.Thornton de Dale is a small village so it is easy to explore and the best way to see the area is on foot.
