Hi Jason, I haven’t had the opportunity to meet you but I know enough of you through my husband, who speaks very highly of you. With that being said, I will comment here to tell you that I can relate to you with what you are saying about building a dream team. Family own businesses tend to grown a love for their team and when the time comes for change that change brings mourning to the owner… there is a “grieving” period when a team member leaves.
Thank you opening up about your struggles it is a beautiful experience to be able to put out content to help the viewers but is as beautiful when CZcamsrs can express their feelings as well.
    Thank you for the video!
Blessing to you, your family and your team.

When I hit thirty I opened my own business and after two years realized that I loved the work, not everything else that came along with it. Bottom line the experience made me a better employee and it gave me an appreciation for the management side of payroll, paperwork, etc. I'm now 63 and can only imagine how things are even tougher today.

your level of honesty is absolutely TOP. i feel your frustration and "pain". I believe we people are a little bit self-punishing. we are starting pursuing our dreams and at some point we want more and more ( not only the money, but our evolution on whatever we do ) , but with this more also comes more responsibility and more stress. and little by little we create our self "jail". its a delicate balance that needs to be find and is difficult.

Valuable insight, the kind that you usually don't get until you're in it. The bigger you grow the more you have to rely on other people and it's tough. No one will love your company as much as you as far as you are concerned. There is always a starting place and an ending, it's that middle place that you have to prolong for as long as you can.

Jason first let me say I feel blessed that you have the shop you do. Thru your videos I discovered you. I have had my Camry and my C8 done by you guys. You have created a super staff and a phenomenal business. I retired about 4 years ago. I would say the biggest challenge and what was at times the most demoralizing. Was developing and keeping a quality staff. I don’t know how you do it these days when the new work force feels entitled to start at the top. What I am sure of, is of all people you will figure it out. You definitely are top shelf in business. I always look forward to coming in and dealing with people like Dan and the others.

6:30 sir, I forget your name. Mine is Sam, and I've been a student of business all my life.
You just hit the nail on the head. You are never done. Businesses that think they are done are DEAD. They are the horse drawn carriage companies, the blacksmiths and the cobbler. You need to adapt to the needs of the customer, always. Correct.
More to this point tho you have stumbled upon the challenge of every employer. How do I incentive production and encourage growth without alienating my core top performers? How do I foster an environment of collaborative competition where the employer and customer end up always winning?
Unfortunately, the hardest part of this scenario is getting the employees to see that they also benefit from this competition. The sharpening their skills is priceless. That's the real challenge, is getting your employees full potential!!
My guess is your top performer does enough to get by and get paid not to make the cover of motor trend or set a new car detail record etc....and there's a reason nobody is inspiring him to go to such lengths
I'm not sure what incentive is best for what business, but I know for a fact that an hourly wage is the easiest way to completely destroy a man's work ethic. -Sam

If it hasn't proven itself already. even with all the headaches of a business owner you should be proud of what you've built and the work you do. Employees will come and go it's hard to keep everyone nature of the business. I have worked for the army and currently 32 years at a large corporation. • @berniecruz8405
    @berniecruz8405 Před 10 měsíci +1

Jason, I know this isn't a East Coast concept, but over here on the West Coast, especially in the Bay Area, one of the biggest perks that corporations give their employees as "perks", is free meals. Some companies do Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks, some just free lunch, some free lunch and snacks and drinks. This has become a standard for companies here in the Bay Area because it helps employee moral AND when a company can help an employee save money on their wallets, that just as being the same and giving employees a raise.
Point is, if you're looking to help your employee long term stay at your company, maybe consider giving free meals, snacks and drinks?
Yes, this can be a big overhead expense for your company, but 1) that expense is a huge tax write off for your company and 2) full bellies keeps people happy as well.
You could even offer a lunch program where you have caterers come in to cook hot meals for your employees and employees could opt in to the lunch program by paying a small monthly fee back to your company. The last corporate job I worked at did this. They hire a professional chef and made high end gourmet meals, but employees would pay like $80/mo, out of their checks to contribute to the added expense for those gourmet meals. And the company would offer free unlimited snacks and cold drinks as well.
Offering these types of, what could seem trivial, perks to employees does increase moral to employees. And one other thing you could keep in mind (and I say this because you kept bringing up how hot it was getting), is for you to invest in insulation to your shop(s), especially in the ceiling, and adding climate control to your building. Yes, again, this is a big overhead expense, BUT keeping your employees comfortable, does help an employee maintain their performance and efficiency with their work. After all, when an employee is feeling too hot and sweaty or too cold with their limbs being numb, this impacts the mindset, thus causing employees to slow down and not get as much done as they would under better environment conditions.
Another option you could do for your company and employees, is offer RSU stock options to your employees. Even if you're not planning on taking your company public, just giving RSU stock options to employees also gives them hope of "one day getting a lot of money" if you ever did take the company public. Which makes employees stick around to become fully invested after 4 years.
Employee moral is one of the biggest investments a company owner can do to get the most of their employees and reduce employee turn around. Keep this in mind and start offering more to your employees and that will keep them around longer and make them feel like there is a future for them to stick around.

This is a tough job Jason as the mental stress is just as bad as the physical stress. The feeling of accomplishment everyday disappears when you stop being a tech and start being an owner. Our economy is currently destroying money in a debt based dollar system where the bond yield curve is inverted. We have not seen the bank show their losses yet from the past year.
You guys have done an amazing job building your business and there are times people leave because deep down they want the income from being a business owner. Over time look for a few people to come back as your well structured and you have work. Most importantly you treat people well! One idea to look into is setting your business up as employee owned. This way the employees become invested as they accumulate stock. Thank you for all you have done for the detailing world!

You guys need to bring your prices back down from high up in the sky to earth. I bought a brand new Camry Trd a year ago called you guys for the front end PPF, the quote was $2400. I thought to myself that’s a bit pricey so I called a bunch of other shops and ended up finding a great shop in the suburbs that’s been around for 25 years that does anything from wraps to PPF to tints and detailing they did the job for $1000 With Xpel film. Car looks great a year later no peeling no issues. Since then I had six of my friends and family members had their cars done at the same place. Your prices are geared toward rich people. There’s a lot more every day Joe’s out there that are willing and wanting to spend money on their cars but not for what you’re charging them. Just some food for thought you probably don’t care, so don’t complain about tough month in tough economy when your prices are too high.

Oh, the blessings of retirement! To no longer have those heavy burdens of personnel management. In nine years of managing the shops and parts departments of a start-up Mercedes-Benz point in Houston, I saw four highly skilled and trained techs start their own businesses, most succesfully going for years. For me it became a matter of trying to hire people with a good work ethic, and emphasize training at every opportunity. Once I resigned myself to the inevitability of that routine, it felt better. But, it never felt as good as taking a test light and a Fluke meter and wiring diagrams and solving some electrical mystery!

I think in this job market if you have 6 guys doing the same job and all being paid differently they're going to talk and know what each other make which is awesome. But, if there are significant variations in pay you're going to have to qualify the "why" in more detail than just seniority. Do you have a transparent structure of like tech (level) 1, tech 2, tech 3 and a clear path so these guys can know how to move up and get better compensation? Clearly someone with 3 years experience will do the job (presumably) better than someone with 3 months of experience but what happens when that guy gets to the 2 or 3 year mark? A lot of companies I've worked for fail to set up a structure or fail to review employees and certainly don't promote or pay raise. How much does it cost you to hire and train and for how long versus how much will it cost to pay someone more and retain them?
At the same time I see a lot of younger folks who feel they're entitled to more than their value. This is why I think structure and transparency is key. It isn't viable anymore to have a trade like this and remain an employee for 20+ years. Much like the owner in this video, he opened his own shop at one point. I'm not sure the cost of living in suburban Chicago but I feel like even being "paid well" as described in the video doesn't pay all the bills so a position like this is bound to have a lot of turnover. I like the In n Out Burger structure. There are guys working the front lines of the restaurant but are also in management and make enough to live off of here in So Cal. If you can keep a top employee like that long term the ROI far exceeds paying them $100k a year. They are happy, more willing to train, better with customers, etc... they want to be there and want to work hard because there is fair compensation.

An idea to keep employees is to have and encourage fun with work. I would rather lose out on a little bit of money as long as i love what i do and the momentum of the company. Right now i hate what i am doing and the way the company is going but when i first started we all joked around and had fun all day making it feel like it was not work. Set aside some of the budget to do something like lunches or some kind of fun activity to team build....bonus marks if you allow the employees to participate in picking the activities or if you choose food then celebrate everyones favorite food or culture

Very cool video. I much prefer the straight talk as opposed to the corporate CZcams videos; they’re just way more interesting.
Work culture will change the moment you step in & out of a room. All you need to do is hire genuinely friendly people who aren’t okay with doing shitty work and everyone inspires each other naturally, cause it feels good to kick ass at what you do and be paid well for it.
The question is, if the work culture was genuinely awesome, why did 6-7 people leave in 2 months? Don’t be afraid to look at it how it really is. It isn’t necessarily that they found something better, it’s just that they couldn’t stand you guys any longer so they forced themselves elsewhere 😂 not trying to make you feel bad just saying, put yourself in their shoes.
You wouldn’t leave a job that paid you well & told you that you were more than grunt labor. Granted you worked for yourself for so long and enjoy a level of comfortability that genuinely empathizing will be tougher than most.
You wouldn’t have a big ass shop with over 15 employees and a hyper successful product website if you didn’t know what you were doing. Just keep showing up and keep kicking ass🤘🤘🤘🤘

You can and must have a written cultural standard that management and the workers are held accountable to. It’s a way of saying, “This is what we say yes and no to.” Accountability is the root of community, it’s based on communication and mutually agreed upon expectations. Accountability means winning your individual battle to support those around you.

Automotive is a tough business to be in. There is little to no opportunity to advance, let's say, at a tech level. You can be a tech, or you can be a manager, which most don't want anyway. It's a revolving door in most shops which makes it difficult. As far as hiring employees it's beyond difficult in this field. I have found it's usually 1 out of 10 that are hired are worth it in the end. Some come in with a huge made up resume and can't wash a car.

I had to make a comment for Jason. I’m a detailer at heart. I’ve been detailing cars for over 30 years not professionally.
Now I started going to ASU to understand how Organizations are run. I’m currently perusing a degree in Organizational Management.
What I can say to you Jason is that a good well run Organization is one that listens to your employees on a personal level.
Understanding the needs of each employee individually and adjusting the business to fit the needs of all your employees separates a well respected business from a not well respected business.
I hope all that made sense.
I’m hoping to possibly peruse a Phd in Organizational Management.
I love that you made this video and I hope you you as the Leader meets with every single employee personally to understand your organization.

the question you need to ask yourself and explain to the guys is.. can the 4th,5th guy replace the 3rd,2nd,1st guy if one of them leaves or is absent for a longer period of time.. and pay them accordingly.. and also what you need to understand that people dont always want money (that doesn't mean being underpaid).. how is the work environment, do you have "friends" at work, is the boss always nagging on you and yelling.. since the boss is working alongside you ,it's big pressure, cant relax yourself to 100%.. things like that.. 80% of the time you leave your job because of the boss and not the company itself.

the aim of the company should be.. when I come to work it doesnt feel like i'm actually working.. alot of CEO's who love to look at numbers dont look outside of the box and realize that maybe if you dont push your employes to the max and just lay of a little bit for example doing 1/2 car less a day and letting them drink coffee for 20min will make the work feel less stressful and make them enjoy coming to work.. from the video i feel like you are trying way to hard to make this company 100% on paper.. but no amount of money will make them stay if they feel shit when they come home from work and just lay down..damn i'm tired today was way to much work.. have 3-5 days like that that every week and i'm gooone..

Life is not easy and the hardships we go through make all the good times feel even better.

Why does someone restore their dad's old muscle car when they can just go buy a new one or find another in a better condition? There's meaning, value, and stories that go along with anything. Everyone should be getting paid based on the market value for the skills they have so it doesn't make sense to pay anyone based on status alone, unless that status is directly related to their skill. In that case even if a top guy left the lower guys shouldn't move up unless their skills did too. Thanks for sharing
