  • Washington, D.C.’s John Kelly has finished, and won, the 2017 Barkley Marathons in 59:30:53. Gary Robbins did not make the 1:42 p.m. EDT cutoff after 60 hours. With the victory, Kelly is the 15th finisher in the race’s history. Robbins missed the 60-hour cutoff by an agonizing six seconds after touching the yellow gate (the finish) from the opposite direction. He had all necessary pages.

"Thank you very much for another wonderful event." This is what Gary says shortly after missing out by 6 seconds...after 60 hours of grueling hardship. What an amazing example of sportsmanship. Congratulations to Gary for a fantastic effort. Oh right, and congratulations to John for officially completing this event.

Facts. A bit too much talk from Robbins. Also, Kelly really came from behind, from quitting the race dazed and confused in 2016, to calmly winning it in 2017.

It's so weird watching this and then going back to watch "Where Dreams Go to Die" by Ethan Newberry (AKA "TheGingerRunner"). Funny because when watching this there's super casual music, but then in the movie, it's super tense music and the cinematography is completely different.

I know your comment was 1 year ago but I just wanted to touch on the great point you made with the music in "Where Dreams Go To Die". The music and cinematography made me physically scared to go trail running for about 2 weeks. I felt like my casual 3 mile state park loop was going to keep me out in the rain and snow for 4 days.

When Gary collapses on the floor after lap 5, we get a good look at his shoes. Does anybody know what they are? I'm guessing a pair of Salomon trail shoes, but... The tread looks more like a road shoe! Also, if it is a trail shoe ... Wouldn't a fell shoe (or whatever the American equivalent is) be more suitable for this sort of rough, uneven, slippery, wet terrain?

    • @cyvoc2316

Could be an early version of the Salomon Sense Ride. Yeah, the logs could be longer, but you also want cushioning, and maybe rain protection, and not much weight. So you have to make compromises.
