  • Steve Christie from Vintage Keys Studio talks about our John Reynolds Catch Harpsichord, built in 1942 in the UK.
    It has two choirs of strings (leather plectra and quills) and a buff stop. These are all controlled by three foot pedals.
    Being a harpsichord, there is no touch sensitivity with the keys so all key strikes will be of the same velocity due to the action of the plucking instrument.

    This man gives Matt berry Vibes i cant take serious and i love it. This is how all musical instrument videos should be.
    hes like " how did i end up in this video"
    Id love to see him go to one of those dead-ass dusty academic harpsichord recitals full of nearly-dead people and just start chatting rubbish and playing around with the instruments

    According the name and function of this interesting instrument there could be the assumption a real Harpsicord can only be build using feathers from an harpy eagle as plectra material. But I'm sure peacocks also sound great ;-)! Unlike the piano which is named the same in both languages the harpsicord it's called "Cembalo" in German so there is no reference to any sort of birds as far as I know. Thank you for sharing this great presentation of both vintage keys and vintage clothing; Baroque on and on :-)!

    This is probably my favorite one yet man! Honestly more educational than most harpsichord videos on CZcams. Ever other video I have found seems to be starting your local stuffy librarian with far to much sense of reverence to the instrument and no sense of fun. Juxtaposed to your which was light, detailed, honest, and enjoyable! Though I am a touch mad at you for moving my “want” of a harpsichord to a “need”.

    Thank you so much for sharing your music and sperspectivity. I do believe the Hollies recorded their ode to the Harpsichord with "Buff Stop". Or rather, an ode to a Buff Stop. We were so much older then.
    Some of my favorite more modern harpsichord was in Laurie Johnston's Avengers incidental music.

      Hahaha thank you - I was told 1942 by the seller years and never thought about it again - although it has dates from the mid to late 40s inside it (when strings were replaced) so maybe it was started in 1942 and finished 10 years later?

    Hallo,sehr interessant und danke dafür. Ich gestatte mir noch den Hinweis, dass ich den Eindruck habe, dass die Reste des Dämpferfilzes jeweils auf der Rückseite
    der vorderen Registerreihe auf den Saiten des anderen 8-Fuss Registers aufliegen, was grosse klangliche Probleme für das zweite 8-Fuss Register mit sich bringt. (3,04)
    Ich empfehle den Überstand glatt mit einem Skalpell abzuschneiden. Sollte ich mich irren dann bitte nehmen Sie es mir nicht übel. Alles Gute für Sie.

    Hey, I love your channel. I have a question, I think you're the one able to answer. There's a song I love : "Suspicion" by Elvis Presley. And I always wondered what was the instrument playing the arpeggios every two bars. I was thinking of a harpsichord, but I'm not sure. What do you think ?

    • @VintageKeysStudio
      @VintageKeysStudio  Před 2 lety +1

    Another interesting video. I'd like a Harpsichord - but no space (& currently no money!). I've only managed to get my hands on one - several years ago. Not sure what the purists would make of the home-made plectra - but if it works & produces a good sound why not! What temperament do you tune it in?

    • @YoItsM0
      @YoItsM0 Před rokem

      purists will use nylon plectra and modern metal alloy strings on a "historic instrument" and shove a bunch of microphones inside it. they can suck it. Your "home made plectra" probably rule.

    • @Hamstray
      @Hamstray Před měsícem

      "what temperament do you tune it in?" definitely not like this one. normally 1/4 comma.

      Look for spinets or clavicytheriums. They're harpsichord but take up less floor space. Roland C-30 might also be an option.
