From Birth to Two: the Neuroscience of Infant Development

  • From birth to two years old is marked by great cognitive, emotional, social and physical development in children, and the brain is growing at a rapid pace. Research has enabled professionals and parents to identify developmental milestones for assessing a child’s progress across time. Although children develop according to a predictable sequence of steps, they do not necessarily proceed through them in the same way or at the same time. Every child’s development is unique, influenced by genetics, prenatal development, the care he/she receives after birth, and the experiences prompted by his or her environment. So there is a wide range of what may be considered 'normal' development. Leading scientists will review both basic and clinical research and discuss factors that influence child development from birth to two-years old, helping us understand what to look for, how to interpret what we observe, and what, if anything, can be done to intervene if something goes “wrong.” Please join us as we delve into the world of infant mental development, with Lisa Freund, Pat Levitt, Lisa Shulman, and Mark Frankel.
The Neuroscience & Society series is a partnership between The Dana Foundation and the American Association of the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

@Jessica Simpson What you said is basic, every mom knows it, and you shouldn't say: stop lying!
'cause this person is not lying, we have moments of joy as mothers and moments of hell, and also of course the beautiful side should not be the only one to be showed, the terrible one too. The both side are valid so we can learn how to be a better mom, we can learn how to treat children. If your experience with children were so bad, you don't have to make others "believe" that their experience will be horrible too, even if you're stating a fact. It's the consequences of getting pregnant, the most beautiful process ever, because it not only involves happiness, but also pain.

@Jessica Simpson why not all of that lol
Once they hit puberty they should learn about it. More you shelter your kids instead of teaching them .. well you know the rest.
It’s just funny how you shot the idea down and jumped to diversity and taxes.
      Like really? Smh

    • @lesleyhinsdale5636
      @lesleyhinsdale5636 Před 2 lety +5

@Jessica Simpson well it’s a debate then and probably something we won’t see in most public schools. An intro to any of it - wouldn’t hurt in JUNIOR high when they are getting ready for high school.
“People who want children, should be made to take parenting classes” ...lol
Only way for that to be taken care of is put it as a mandatory class as early as JUNIOR high. Making- adults take parenting class is as realistic and making sure a president has a political background before running. But as you know that DEFINITELY was not required. Lol
However, while leaving THAT subject alone...
Kids have been sheltered & underestimated on what they are capable of learning for years. If you compare education a good 20 years ago to how it is now. . much more material has been included along with better teaching styles.
And to focus on that above comment. The only way we can make sure individuals are educated on parenting is to include it in junior high or high school as a mandatory class. 12 years old is early but that’s why parents can teach and answer any quest they may have until it’s the more appropriate time.
High school for sure is a perfect time frame to make it a mandatory class as well as the other 2 topics originally mentioned intertwined in that type of class.

Am I the only one thinking that the reason gestures are an indicator of later language development is because gestures are language? I struggle to imagine not talking and communicating to my children at any point of their lives. I talked to them from conception, the talked to me from the moment I held them. Newborn babies talk with their cries and body tension. Babies have a different cry for each different need. I need a nappy change sounds very different from I'm hungry or I have wind pain for example. By one month all three of my children spoke with cries, smiles, body tension and expressions but the one that blew me away was the way they spoke with their eyes. Look into their eyes and I knew exactly what they were saying. Admittedly mine were early communicators, late movers and it doesn't get much better than that, almost no need for a tantrum at all but there was a couple. If you're not communication with your baby you are missing something wonderful. Just stop doing, sit with your baby, tune in and pay attention. Unless your baby has a condition like autism for example, your baby will be communicating with you. FYI dogs have a different bark not only for each need but how far away and position of a stranger near their home and more. Pay attention people or you're missing out.

100% true! After getting pregnant hearing baby cries at work was very different compared to pre pregnancy. At times I'd ask if the parents could tell the cry differences, and usually it boiled down to the babies are each unique and the parents of multiple kids harped that the most! Each baby learns to communicate with its parent differently, even if techniques are the same, the overall needs of the child are different from the last. That being said, it still didnt stop me from asking if it was a hungry cry when I felt a full body electric current then my chest ache (it was usually); I wonder if some mothers can tell physically from the pheromone exchange that alters breast milk, if its a hungry cry.

I wonder whether we could do better as a society to make sure that fewer of those early synapses are lost in that early period of life (between 2-10 years of age) - how much are we leaving on the table? I also wonder how much of that pruning is genetic, how much is a consequence of biological "overshooting" and consequently post-hoc return to the equilibrium vs how much of that is simply because after 2 years of experiencing this world things start getting more boring as the kid has already seen a lot and the environment (the real-world) is not as stimulating as it used to be.
Great presentations, thought-provoking. Any papers you could point me to that describe how the number of neurons and synapses evolve during early development (and later into adulthood)? I was surprised to hear that neurogenesis only makes for a minor percentage of neurons after birth and that synaptogenesis is where the bulk of development goes into.

not only do they need to be limited for children, but also the parents. I see far too many parents on their devices and not interacting with their children. Parent also default to devices to control negative behaviors in their children.

I wish the presenters had more enthusiasm. I was wondering if I was bothering them for information about forty minutes into the lecture. Maybe I need to do my own research because I hate hearing so many bullet points. I would recommend anyone to read the transcript. The voices are boring, drone on and on with very hand wavy sentiments, and throughout every speech lacks passion. I think there is a lot of room for improvement. Maybe have someone else read the experts speech notes. Maybe pay them more, but this was informative. So, at least you will be sent to sleep quite early.

#3 - Genes and experiences together build brains (serve and return relationships)
#4 - Cognitive, social and emotion development are inextricably intertwined
#5 - Toxic stress damages brain architecture
#6 - Resilience is not an internal character strength, but rather is built through combined impact of genes and experiences of a child
#7 - For many functions, the brain's capacity for change decreases over time (cost-effectiveness factor) - but not all functions are impacted equally

I dont think its cute... im not teaching my daughter to fight over no damn boy. Not at 1, not at 21. Especially not during the age where they are learning and their brain is developing their foundation of this world between 0- 5 yrs old. I know there are ppl who are going to argue me down about my opinion. Save your time. My opinion is what it is and im not responding.😊 Have the day you deserve 😊🩷
