Hair loss with Ozempic and Saxenda?!

  • I have had several subscribers and followers asking about hair loss with the GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic and Saxenda - they have either been experiencing thinning of their hair OR know someone who might be experiencing it.
While I have not worked with any patients or clients that have reported this as a side effect, this doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
Let’s take a look and see what could be the cause.
⚠️ Do you think you are experiencing hair loss due to your medication? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

The malnutrition perspective makes a whole lot of sense, thank you for putting it out there. I started to Wegovy 9 months ago and only went up to the 1.75 mg dosage, which is where I remain. I've lost 20% of my body weight and feel fantastic. And yes, my hair is falling out a bit. I'll pay more attention to protein and overall calorie intake. BTW, this medication is a real game changer for me, my whole psychology around eating feels almost normal for the first time in my adult life. I still love to eat but the portions are just naturally smaller and I don't have cravings and a sense of constant hunger like I used to.

I wish people would get nutrition advice when taking these meds, it’s so important. Lowering processed carbs and making sure you drink enough water and get enough protein and fruits and vegetables will help avoid those terrible side effects of kidney problems and muscle and hair loss. Of course some people will not be able to take them just like any other medication but they’re so useful in helping reversing obesity and its related health problems.

Your video helped me so much! Both of my doctors (GP and weight loss) said that my hair loss is not from taking diabetes medications, not related at all! I knew it had to be because it started 6 months ago, the time I started taking Ozempic. But now I'm hopeful that I might recover from this, thank you. And I've lost 35 pounds so far, I'm halfway to my goal weight

I finally realized that it had to be saxenda.. my hair thinned out so 😔 bad after I lost 126 lbs. I have PCOS and was put on a saxenda because I was at 286 by my endocrinologist. I used it for around 9 months.... I am so grateful for your video sir.

Thank you for this video! I clicked because suddenly my hair fallout is ridiculous --and I'm on Wegovy.
I discovered last year that when I managed to eat zero added sugar, low carb for two months (so a focus more on protein) my usual level of hair fallout ceased almost completely. Fell off the wagon --my hair started falling out again. --This was all pre-wegovy.
Suddenly I'm losing so much hair that I remarked today, "How do I have any left?!" And I see where it's thinning.
Didn't think about Wegovy. But did think about how I'm eating too much sugar and carbs when I eat.
I know I'm not getting enough protein right now.
--I also noticed some lines in my nails suggesting some arrested growth.
So I'm going to focus on hitting my protein goal and hopefully I don't join the ranks of the bald. I'll report back in a few months. lol

I also think hair loss is due to malnutrition in a medically free individuals using weight loss injection medications. I used saxenda for 2 years and some days I had sever nausea so I go without eating for more than 30 hr, clearly I was eating way less calories. I lost 25 kg over 2 years and I noticed hair loss over that period. now I'm off saxeda for 1 year and 9 months and thankfully my hair started to grow back. So I fully support your theory.

Intermittent fasting such as the 20:4 fasting/eating window is known to cause hair thinning. I knew it was coming b4 starting, but 3 months of Saxenda + 20:4 when I first noticed hair falling I began eating more & dropped down to 16:8.

Me too! I've been on Ozempic for a year and noticed my hair loss last December. A patch here and there and then a bald spot. I thought it was from my braids or the protective styles I wear so I went to the dermatologist and he said I have no issues with my scalp and no alopecia. So I'm going to speak to my doctor and get off this stuff.

My hair loss was excessive using Ozempic. After 6 months, I’m still on prescription meds to grow my hair back.m, will have to continue to pay for this high cost med for a year at least. Loved the weight loss, it was a plus (I was on it for diabetes) but being skinny doesn’t look good on a bald head for me. Just saying.

I’m losing fistfuls of hair daily after 5 months on ozempic. The malnutrition makes a lot of sense. I’ve lost 45 pounds in the last couple months. I had thick, luxurious hair prior to this and I’ve lost so much.
I’m going to come off the ozempic. I was taking it for weight loss, and I’ve lost the weight. I’m not a diabetic, but this is not the cause of my weight loss. My A1C prior to starting the medication was under 6. This is crazy, and it’s going to start getting worse. It’s awful.
It’s also not other medications. I’ve been on the same 4 meds for years, and have never lost hair.

I live with several medical chronic illnesses (as well as schizophrenia) and the worst part of all the meds I take are the anti-psychotics. It’s not necessarily falling out at the follicle. It’s just brittle and I only take it once a month now I’m just wondering if maybe in the beginning when I was taking a shot every seven days, it may be depleted my body because obviously I’ve eaten less but I still eat really healthy and good hopefully it will subside since I’m only taking the shot once a month now to maintain my weight.

Any extreme weight loss side effect is hair loss. I lost weight with the Atkins diet and lost hair, so did my kids. Relatives and friends that had gastric bypass surgery also lost hair. When your body is under stress you lose hair. Take a good liquid vitamin supplement to try to replace nutrients you are missing. Liquid vitamins are more easily absorbed. Add an additional Hair, Skin, Nails vitamin.
