  • With anything in life, there is always a potential for negative effects and sometimes there can be too much of a good thing! Taking medication is certainly no exception.
This will be Part 1 of a multi-part series where I review how to manage the most common side effects that come with the GLP-1 RAs such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda.
Today we are starting with heartburn! Let’s go!
⚠️ Are you experiencing heartburn due to your medication? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I so know 100% what do you mean about the next level heartburn. When it gets that bad the only thing that helps me is a G.I. cocktail from the emergency room which I hate going to, but Maalox, Pepcid, and omeprazole combined are the only things that will work. I’m so sorry. I’m still dealing with the last aspiration of acid and fire that came out of my chest making me feel like I was dying. God bless you.

Good tips. I find that one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1-2 times daily, works great for the heartburn. You can add Stevia to make it easily drinkable. Also, going for a walk after meals helps with the gravity thing you mentioned.

Apple cider vinegar can actually aggravate it! It is an acid and it can start to break down the esophagus which can then get hurt by your acid.

So from my understanding semaglutide decreases how fast food is digested making you feel full longer. Does it do this by reducing stomach acid which would cause the food to ferment subsequently causing acid reflux? If that is the case wouldn't eating more acidic foods or adding apple cider vinegar to the end of a meal help the reflux?

You mention in the video that most people should experience less heartburn once the titration period is completed, and a small percentage will continue to experience. For the majority group, how long should to expect to experience the symptoms? I'm doing everything possible to manage my symptoms (I already had GERD prior to commencing ozempic) - I'd like to know how long I should expect to sit tight and get used to it. Ball park/generalisation is fine - I know you can't guess for me specifically.

Thank you for this video. I’m looking for a specific question answered. I took saxenda for 8 weeks and the heartburn got worse not better so I stopped it- hoping to try a different drug. However it’s been 13 days since taking a dose of saxenda and the heartburn is not any better. I didn’t have heartburn before taking saxenda. My question is- have you seen this and how long will it take for the heartburn will subside? What exactly is happening in my esophagus? Is the drug still in my system and just takes time to leave? Keep in mind I started Prilosec week 2 of saxenda when the heart burn started. Week 8 I switched to Pepcid aC. Last night it got so bad I took both. 😢

Have been taking Ozempic for almost 8 weeks. Just commented to my husband that I'm getting severe heartburn and joint achiness along with intense neuropathy pains in ankles and feet. Haven't taken Ibuprofen for years, but recently have taken 600mg (3 tablets) of it for pain keeping me awake at night. Additionally, I feel overly full after soup for lunch. Makes sense after you explained the slow gastric emptying. The severity of the heartburn scares me, though. In the past, I've awoken, unable to take in air after aspiration of stomach acid into my lungs. Gasping for breath, I had to run into the kitchen and put apple cider vinegar and baking soda together with a bit of water. It fizzes but settles down the burning tissue and allows me to breathe again. Scary! I also take fennel (herbal supplement capsules) to control heartburn. Don't want to start up with Omeprizole again as it brings it's own bad side effects. Have also wondered why my hiccups have been so chronic lately. Thank you for explaining all of this. I'll have to make some adjustments.
