- Arecanut is an important plantation crop of the state. Monsoon this year is delayed due to L Nino effect. Maintaining good soil fertility and also providing nutrients at the right time is an important operation in arecanut. delayed monsoon prevents the farmers in giving nutrients to the arcanat crop.

Thanks a lot for your useful information on arecanut cultivation. I constantly follow your advice on arecanut cultivation. Though i am basically from arecanut cultivation family since birth- for the past 67 years- in view of my transferable job , i had missed the recent developments. Now for the past 2 years i have planted arecanut in about 12 acres out of my 15 acres- in a place which is about 6 kms from Sakleshpur. It was earlier paddy field which used to get submerged during monsoon as it is on the bank of the river Hemavathy. My biggest problem is controlling the weeds in view of sprinkler irrigation. I hate to use weedicides as i believe in organic farming. Every second month the grass ( mostly) raises above 2 feet. I tried sowing horse gram(' huruli' )but it met with little success. Spending very heavy amount on brush cutting in view of nonavailability of male workers. Could you please help me in reducing the cost on removing the weeds- mostly grass. Also my another request to you is to guide Malenadu people about arecanut cultivation as most of the times your advice becomes more relevant for dry belts like Davanagere, Chitradurga, Channagiri etc.Thanks and regards. Thanks very much for the feedback.. Yes we will concentrate more on all the zones henceforth.. Weeds are major problems in all parts of a Arecanut growing areas. As you are aware that in Malnad areas we receive good amount of rainfall.. Green manure crops like Puraria can help you in preventing weeds and also it acts as cover crop.. Even velvet beans you can try...
