The dangers of buying analog synths

- How do you know an analog synth is really working? Here are some things to check on the voices. There is much to synths, but here is a start.
This is a Roland JX-3P that I am working on. It is badly out of calibration and has some other issues like a jumpy data slider and a voice that is really quiet on just a few patches, pointing at some other problem with (I believe) the filter CV signal. - Hudba
I LOVE how that organ patch sounds just as it is!
Someone could always move the calibration trimmers to the back panel and then you can go wild with it! Call it a Mod.
Funny me to
A lot of JX3P users, myself included, jacked up the res trimpots to get more self oscillation out of them. Makes some of the presets useless but that was ok with me because they are not that great. I also had to replace my data slider, actually stuck the brilliance slider there since it was the same value. Put a rotary pot sticking out the back for the brilliance control since I never used that either.
Ran a separate output off the sum voice output test point since it bypassed the chorus unit and HPF, never used those either and got a clearer sound with more guts.
There are a ton of mods that can be applied to this synth. I have been working some out in my head. My edit slider cuts in and out- on my work list.
They're like classic sports cars - finding and buying them is the easiest bit, keeping them running is the challenge!
It's all part of the charm of owning a half century old synth. Also, it keeps the synth techs in business 😉
Vintage analog synths are definitely a commitment. Especially if you aren’t an electronic engineer 😂
I am happy every time they turn on and play.
any time you buy an old synth, old car, old house - count on having decades of decay and needed repairs/restoration
Wrong, just got one repair for my obxA is got 30 years ago
Organ patch has all the dogs in my neighborhood barking
That organ reminded me of something Mark Mothersbaugh would use "Rugrats cartoon" background music. Just something weird wonky like how did he put it together. Some way out of tune brass or like a dramatic pitch modulated choir sample that doesn't sound natural at all. Could be junk to most people, but before you junk it sample it at least. It does have a unique sound even though its not inteded to sound that way.
Impressive, very nice... lets see Paul Allen's synth
Change all the caps of old synths and they will sound better than ever and better than any new ones or plugs !
Man. Recapping is not magic. It does not always influence the sound.
My Summit would disagree
It’s better to diagnose the problems and replace what’s needed. Yes, many times it’s the PSU caps. But replacing all the caps in the machine is a huge waste IMO.
@@dustcombo I agree - and the risk of damaging the circuit board isn't worth it. So many people have no idea how to solder properly let alone de-soldering. If someone told me a synth was recapped, I'd want to take a look inside before buying!
Juno-60 with a weird issue - no matter which key you start on, once you have pressed 4th or 5th key, that one sticks on sustain until you've hit another 4 or 5 keys, then a new one sticks/sustains. Thought you were going to have same issue.
The voice assigner rotates through each voice one after the other. Every 6 notes you are back at the same one. One of your voices has a failed chip controlling the adsr envelope for the vca. The IC is most likely a 4051 multiplexor, as used in other Roland's from the 80's. The Juno should have a test mode that will let you identify what voice it is, but it really shouldn't matter since the single multiplexor controls the all the vca op amps. If you find more than one voice is misbehaving, then the op amp fed by the 4051 is bad. This is all based on how a Jx-8P works, but I bet money the Juno is very similar.
I am the type of freak to actually enjoy these kinds of issues with old analogue gear
I'll buy it as is.
Let's talk if you're serious. Though I calibrated it and some of that sound is gone. Not all. eizdepski@yahoo.com
@@ErichIzdepski@ErichIzdepski Oh damn, didn't think I'd get a reply lol.
I am a bit interested, although the market for a jxp3 is a couple hundred out of my range.
But if something changes I'll let you know ASAP.
I hoped for sparks
I am much better at repairs than that! Just destroy some fuses every now and then and that is hard to film.
@@ErichIzdepski i have never seen a video from you before, CZcams suggested this one to me, and it wouldn't have been the first time I was shown the destruction of some caps. I didn't want to imply your lack of skill
It sounds good broken!
GAS
Fun stuff to own, but your hobby needs to be enjoying repairing these instruments. If you're just interested in making music, go with newer synths and plug-ins.
I do both. And own some of everything.
The perfect response. 👍
Agreed
Whats the synth?
Roland JX-3P.
