    Hi Denise, great video! I read a comment from one of your viewers that I found extremely helpful regarding a palette for RS watercolors… After hearing that metal palettes can sometimes react with natural mineral colors over time (like Malachite and Azurite), I began searching for a plastic palette. The Mijello 33 watercolor palette (sold on Amazon) works perfectly when you remove the tray for the 33 colors and affix the pans to the bottom section using sticky tack. It also leaves lots of room to add pans to your collection over time. Just wanted to share, and thanks for the great content!

    Roman Szmal is one of my favorite brands. I was particularly interested in which ones were toxic. Between you and Sarah Burns I have decided not to paint with any toxic colors outside. For studio painting I am working out a way to properly dispose of them. Thank you Denise!

    • @emilymaness
      @emilymaness Před 3 lety +6

      @@chrissie4452 the best thing that I know of is to let your paint water settle overnight. Poor off the water on the top. Most of the heavy metals settle at the bottom. Then get a large container. I am going to use an empty kitty litter plastic jug. Then pour the rest of your water in there. Once it’s filled up you can take your toxic water to a hazardous waste facility that will dispose of i properly for you.

    • @mjpete27
      @mjpete27 Před 3 lety +3

      I have had a gravel bucket outside of my studio, it is quite deep and the holes in the bottom have canvas covering them. I dump my paint waters into this bucket and the water evaporates. This does leave colored rocks behind, but these can be painted on to create rocks of kindness. Little treasures to leave about your own town to bring a small joy to others lives.

    I have most of these colours, they are so lovely! I really appreciated your insight on pigment toxicity, so many people have no idea and do silly things like lick their brushes or let their pets drink paint water 😩

    I own a number of Roman Szmal pans, including some of the colours you picked for your palette. The only ones that were duds for me were the opaque milky paints that I got on a whim (Lavender, Sky Blue), and that was really my own fault - it's a matter of personal taste, not the quality of the paints themselves.

I did want to mention that recently, I have started to use graphite grey in my palette because I really enjoy working with pencils, sometimes over my watercolor painting or sometimes as parted of a very muted, limited palette. I only have two Roman szmal colours so far, but they’re absolutely wonderful. I have Cyprus burnt umber deep, it’s a lovely deep brown, a little redder than I had expected but still nice, granted I don’t really know how to use it. The other colour is their Azo red PR144 and I bought entirely out of curiosity about a red with azo pigment qualities. It absolutely did not disappoint, it’s beautiful and luminous, the best way I can think to describe it is juicy, and it shared that mysterious quality of nickel azo yellow and azo green that makes it a good mixer for both oranges and purples. It looks fairly similar to Aquarius red so I don’t know how useful it would be to you, but to anyone else, I would highly recommend it.
    I’m not currently in the market for anymore watercolour (no matter how much I want it, I have to resist) but the greens, purples and earth tones of Roman szmal are so tempting even if their cool reds leave something to be desired (like where are all the PV19s? Why don’t they have a quin rose?)

Second is the "Green Gold Deep" PY129, similar to most versions, and same for the last color I've got which is the common "Perylene Green" with PBk31. I'm going to get the version you've got here next!☺️ Thanks for sharing your palette here:)
    Btw- I also had no troubles with paint sticking to the wrapper. However, I've seen others who have just pop the pans into the freezer for a bit before opening them.

    That shadow violet is very pretty. I also like the selection of greens here but I love warm/deep greens.

      Also I got that Etchr mixed media watercolor/mixed media book based on your review a while back. I haven't had a chance to use it because fibromyalgia is trying to ruin my life BUT my cats sure love to stretch their claws on the little canvas cover. It's so fuzzy now. My current review is that it's a cat fur collector and very expensive cat scratcher.

    Hey I just got my order of Roman Szmal-colors, which you recommended. Thank you so much. I must say I already swatched them and it almost makes me want to throw all my other palettes into the bin ha ha. I won't do that of course. They spread so so nicely. I ordered the bright ultramarine. It is the best ultramarine I ever got. It is beaming!!! I am already excited to paint with them and see how they work for me. It can be difficult to work with easy loosening colors. I love to watch your videos . Stay safe!

      So glad you like them! I like to hand off paints I'm no longer using to other artists - so that's always an option if you decide these are "the ones"! haha

    these paints have been in my sights for a while now, and once i have money to spare i will definitely invest in some, some of these are absolutely gorgeous! i'm especially a big fan of misty morning and shadow violet, even though i tend to prefer single pigment paints almost exclusively. and their indanthrone blue is so rich and vibrant! i wonder if it is more vibrant compared to maybe white night's, windsor and newton's, or schmincke's version of the pigment.
    i've done some preliminary research into these already and have a short list of about 12 paints that i wanna try for myself. i think once i get them i will transfer them into half pans for my main palette (which is what i do with my white nights full pans) because i simply don't find much use in large full pans in my art, but other than that this could become my new favorite brand.
    thank you for the video! it was definitely informative.

    As a celebration of some personal successes, I splurged on a few dozen colors from Roman Szmal over the past few weeks. My bank account is none too happy, but my itch to collect all the colors has been scratched for now.
    Funnily enough, at least one other CZcams watercolor artist saw very little flow when swatching this particular brand. Variation from batch to batch, maybe?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  Před 3 lety +4

      That is intriguing. There were some swatches that didn't appear to flow when I first put them in the water, but when they're left to dry, they stealth sneak across the page. I'm sure paper is also a factor!

    Sooo nice... I should have swatched along. Quite a few of those colors are laying here for some time waiting for a swatch, but I was too comfortable watching you doing it :)

    I believe the RS mineral violet is like DS imperial purple. Same pigments as rose of ultramarine, but obviously in different proportions.

    I have the a few of these colors and have really enjoyed them. Really my only complaint is that I prefer to work with fresh paint and Roman Szmal is only available in pans, but the ones I have do rewet fairly easily.

  • @reneaclark7689
    @reneaclark7689 Před 3 lety +1

    The mineral violet is closer to daniel smith imperial purple than rose of ultramarine, as rose of ultramarine has more quin rose and imperial has more blue like the mineral violet.
