  • Why We Cube is a documentary about the competitive world of speedcubing and how it's changing the lives for many in this ever-growing sport. Follow the stories of four speedcubers -- each with their own special place in cubing and learn how they’ve impacted the community, and how the community has impacted them.
    Why We Cube is narrated by Feliks Zemdegs, and features competitive speedcubers Drew Brads and Max Park, WCA delegate Kit Clement, and Cubicle CEO Phil Yu.

    My parents and friends dont know why i cube. They see it as a noisy toy that wastes money for the same things over and over. But i know its so much more. I got into cubing about 5 months ago when my cousin challenged me to solve his cube. I havent seen him in a bit but for thanksgiving i cant wait to show him how much ive improved and the challenge he gave me inspired a whole new path in my life and as of now i know full beginner PLL, around 80% of beginner OLL and learning beginner F2L. i average around 25-30 seconds and i currently main the RS3M 2020 with upgraded magnets from the magnet kit. i use the second setting with the adjustment system and will soon be getting into over events and puzzles like clock, pyraminx, and so many more wca, and non wca puzzles in the near future. Thank you cubers and thank you for this amazing documentary. Cubing isnt just a hobby, its a lifestyle.

      @cuber9215 Před rokem +3

      I completely agree dude, I started cubing when my friend Declan bought a 2x2 to school and solved it like nothing. It seems kinda funny now but i was amazed at how he could do this. We had a secret Santa for my class and I got a 2x2 rubiks cube. (Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!!) Anyways, lol I spent weekend reading the instructions and eventually memorizing the steps. Once I got back to school I showed up in front of Declan with a 2x2 and asked if he wanted to race. I felt like a God not only being able to solve one but to be faster than him. It was CRAZY. Eventually I got a 3x3 but I was very reluctant to learn because memorization with the instructions was really difficult. I wish I knew about jperm then lol. But I eventually did it and I have been cubing for 2 years now and I average 12 seconds when I'm fully warmed up. I remember though thinking about 2 months ago that my cubing goal was to get one sub ten. I was like if I get one sub ten in my entire cubing career, I will be a legend. But I thought that this could never happen. Then it finally did. It was a 9.98 I think and I expected myself to jump up and run around and stuff lol. But I kinda just sat there and thought, "huh... that really just happened... well let's keep going". And I've been able to get a sub 9 and eventually 2 sub 8's! At the time I was like ayyy lez gooo. You know but looking back now it amazes me how far I've come. And I still don't think of myself as like a pro cuber. But yeah sorry for the suuuper long message lol, I kinda just felt like it idk. But yessss cubing is ABSOLUTELY more than just solving puzzles and toys or whatever. I wish you the best of luck with your cubing and I hope your family comes to realize how great the sport of speedcubing really is.

    Amazing, Chris! I love it! This so eloquently shows how cubing has impacted the lives of so many people. As someone with social anxiety, one of the most nerve-wracking times for me was just before going to my first competition. I was so nervous and scared because I didn't know anyone there. But when I first started talking to people, all of my fears melted away, and to this day it remains as one of the most fun experiences of my life. I live in rural, northwestern Minnesota, and there is *nobody* around who cubes, and so for me to be able to go and spend an entire day with people who share the same passion and love as I do is something I can't pass up, and is something I will continue to cherish forever. Thank you so much for this, Chris!

    This Documentary has proven to be a very great astonishing piece of work to me.
    As one of the speakers said"I want to spread cubing" or something like that, mainly focused on cubing being something bigger in the world. I respect this statement and individual very much.
    Me as an example am a cuber inspired by my friend, a speed cuber, and as mentioned in this wonderful video "A hobby first, then competitive". I love seeing cubing competitions blogs, documentaries, and youtube videos, but especially the tournaments, as they seem like a huge place to just go, cube, do some stuff, and have fun with it most importantly, and just socialize, opening a path to meeting many new and different people who may just even make you a better person. I love cubing, however, as i primarily stated, i would love the idea of it to be spread, such as comps or branches or at least an introduction in countries such as those in Africa:Ghana, togo, Nigeria, etc, and other contents and places as well as countries which do not have a scope gf cubing.
    However, I also don't have to be so selfish as cubing may not be something MANY people would be interested into and may not overall acquire a wide attraction , interest etc. however for the small majority that does have these kind of desires, it would mean a lot, and possibly even spread and somehow advertise cubing in these countries, promoting cubing to several many different people, which could possibly be the next Max Park, Feliks Zemdegs, Drew Brads.
    I really appreciate it if you have read it all the way till here.

    This is definitely my favorite cubing video yet. If a non-cuber watches this, they'll be able to learn so much about the cubing community and they might want to become a cuber themselves and the cubing community will grow even more. I could show this to my friends and they'll be able to learn more about what I do, and that it's not just something I do in my free time or for fun, but that it's something I want to make a career of and be the best I can, make lots of friends, and much more. 😁

    OMG - what a wonderful film. It should be on TV. Last week I bought four Rubik's cubes for my grandkids, and one for myself. I didn't want to give them out till I could at least help them a little bit. Today, after watching a 'solve' video on CZcams for the zillionth time, and after about a hundred (make that two hundred) attempts, I have managed to solve the cube (probably more by luck than anything else!). I'll be 72 in a couple of weeks so it's never too late to learn. Well done all of you for such a fantastic film, beautifully made and a credit to you all. Gotta go and practice more now!

    Utterly fantastic. I've been waiting for a documentary like this for a very long time. Also, the Hemingway quote at the end is EXACTLY what I love about cubing. You're never "really" in a competition with others. Even the greatest in the world (narrator included) are just trying to be better than themselves. It's the key to self-improvement at literally anything. Not to mention, it's a lesson in healthy attitude formation.

    Wow, great documentary! It's rare that the spotlight is on the people that push the community, like Kit and Phil. Having been a competition organizer myself, this movie touched something that I had put away for a few years. Specifically, that Phil quote about missing your chance and your time, and the hole that creates within you, but how he found another way to kind-of fill that hole by helping others live out their dream. Again, thanks for this, makes me feel inspired.
