The Bull System for Everyone

  • The bull System
A very important thing to note is that all hens on this system must have been with the cock to be used for at least a day or 2 previously before using the system. This is to simply ensure that the birds already ‘KNOW’ each other and that the hen will allow the cock to saddle straight away. This should ensure full fertilisation. If the couple have been mated before that is even better.
A simple widowhood box or other is ideal as long as the foster cock cannot saddle and fully mate with the hen. This means the hen is locked in the box fully for the time until she lays her first egg. Feeding and water should happen within the box. This helps to continue the bond with the foster mate and also the box itself.
    (day 1)
Place all hens in their boxes to pair with their respective cocks. The cocks must not be able to saddle the hens
Do this as early as possible in the day ensuring that there is a full day for the couple to be together.
    (day 2)
All Cocks and hens to be left as is. Feed and water in boxes as normal.
    (day 3)
All Cocks and hens to be left as is. Feed and water in boxes as normal.
    (day 4)
Each hen to be used is to be placed with the stud cock for 3 hours each. If the cock saddles straight away the hen can be removed immediately and then returned to the breeding section and their foster cock. (This time is dependent on how many hens are being used at one time. For this time (3 Hours) optimally 4 is the most. I also use 4 because I have used more in the past but sometimes would not get full fertility.
    (day 5)
Repeat as yesterday but start with a different hen from yesterday.
    (day 6)
Repeat as yesterday but start with a different hen from yesterday.
    (day 7)
All Cocks and hens to be left as is in the breeding section. Feed and water in boxes as normal.
    (day 8)
All Cocks and hens to be left as is in the breeding section. Feed and water in boxes as normal.
Leave all this way until the first egg is laid. When the first egg is in the nest the box door may be open to allow the hen and cock in and out. This will make no difference to the Sire of the eggs as the eggs will already be fertilised. As the saying goes ‘you cannot become pregnant twice’. It does not matter if the foster cock now saddles the hen the eggs inside her are already fertilised.
Care must be now given that the hens do not go into the wrong box and cause damage to other nests. To make sure this does not happen I allow each pair freedom of the section alone for a half day each. This gives the hen a chance to learn exactly which box is hers and there are usually no problems.
If you plan to breed from the foster cocks as well in the same breeding season then the fosters should be mated with whatever hen he is to breed with that season. Meaning that after the stud is finished and the young are reared the next pair of eggs will be from the foster cock and his respective hen. If you intend to use the stud cock again in the bull system throughout the season then remove all hens when the young are about 14 days and allow the cocks to complete rearing. The system can then be repeated as soon as the young are weaned or at whatever time you wish.
If there are more than 4 hens to be mated with the stud cock for example 12 hens. The matings can be staggered at 4 hens every 2 days. So the first 4 are introduced to the fosters and on day 3 the second 4 are introduced and on day 5 the next 4 are introduced. This means that on day 4 and 5 the first 4 hens are seeing the stud cock, days 6 and 7 the next 4 see the stud cock and days 8 and 9 the last 4 hens see the stud cock. This gives with good results 24 young from the stud cock in a matter of 6 to 10 days depending on how well and on time the hens lay.
Also it goes without saying that the hens must be in condition to mate as usual. There can be hiccups if hens do not lay on days 8 to 10 of their mating’s. For example I had a hen lay this year on day 13 resulting in the eggs being infertile. This can happen and I am not saying this system is 100% successful. In my experience it is more successful if practiced in the above way than not. This year I have had a 95% success rate with fertilisation of eggs and then the hatchings with various young being removed for different reasons. Overall I have weaned about 85% of all birds from this system with success and have found the more practiced you become using it the better the hit rate.

I was using the bull system about 40 years ago. Till now I never heard of a champion pigeon bred this way. So I don't say there aren't, but I don't know one.

Thanks for sharing this video. I keep Birmingham Rollers and I'm going to use the bull system to 8 hens so everything you said is Very Useful. Will a cock serve 6 hens in one day with the approx 2 hours rest in between or would you surgested doing 3 hens the first week then the next 3 hens after the first hens have laid the second hen?

I have a question. I want to use a stud cock for 4 hens this year, and one of the hens is the hen he was mated with last year. In other words, the stud cock will also be the "foster" cock of his own hen. I have built a stud pen with 4 nest boxes. In using your system, can I use his mate from last year the same as I would the other three? Or will he ignore the other three hens and choose to spend time in the nest box with his hen? Should I put her in a separate loft or basket while he is supposed to be studding the other three hens? Any other suggestions?

Honeymoon Loft what are you doing with the eggs from the other hens??

@@safehavenlofts9449 I am planning to have the hens and the foster cocks to raise their own babies per your video. The other hens (my flying team) will raise one round of their own babies before training. In the Bull Pen, C1 (the stud cock) will be breeding H1, H2, H3 and H4. Eggs/babies will be raised by H1 and C1, H2 and C2, H3 and C3, and H4 and C4. Does that make sense?
