In this video Er. Sudeep Kumar Agrawal, Corporate Trainer of Civil Guruji, is Explaining About Minimum Distance Between Individual Reinforcement Bars As Per IS : 456 - 2000
According to the IS-456:2000, the minimum spacing between the individual reinforcement bars is determined as follows.
As per IS-456:2000, the minimum horizontal distance between the individual bars shall be the maximum of the following three conditions.
As shown in the above drawing, if all the bars spaced horizontally are of equal diameter, i.e. 20mm., the spacing as per condition-1 is 20mm. if all the bars spaced horizontally are of unequal diameter, i.e. 25mm. & 16mm, the spacing as per condition-2 is 25mm.
Suppose if we use a coarse aggregate of 20mm. size, the minimum spacing as per condition - 3 is
= [nominal size of coarse aggregate + 5mm.]
= [20mm. + 5mm.] = 25mm.
Here, the maximum value in all three conditions is 25mm.
So, we have to consider 25mm. as the minimum horizontal spacing.
If we use a coarse aggregate of 25mm. size., the minimum spacing will be
= [25mm.+ 5mm.] = 30mm.
Here, we have to consider 30mm. (greater value) as the minimum horizontal spacing.
In any situation ( condition-1), the minimum vertical bar spacing shall not be less than 15mm.
If the diameter of the bars is ≤12mm., the minimum vertical distance shall be 15mm. In this case, we cannot consider 12mm. ( bar dia.) as the minimum spacing.
2. Aggregate size:
Suppose we use a coarse aggregate of 20mm. size, the minimum vertical spacing as per condition - 2 is
= [ 2/3 × nominal size of coarse aggregate ]
= [2/3 × 20mm.] = 13.33mm.

A. Minimum horizontal distance between two parallel main reinforcing bars shall be equal to or more then the value..
1) The Diameter of bar if the diameter are equal
2) The Dia. Of larger bar if the diameter are unequal
3) 5mm more then the nominal maximum size of coarse aggregates. . . Example:-
#.Minimum horizontal distance of bars shall be equal to or more then
1:- Dia of bar are equal = 12 mm
2:- nominal max. size of CA + 5mm then 20+5mm= 25 mm.
So take horizontal distance = 25 mm
#.Minimum horizontal distance of bars shall be equal to or more then
1) If Dia of bar are unequal take larger dia of bar = 32 mm 2) nominal max. size of CA + 5mm then 20 + 5mm= 25 mm.
So take horizontal distance = 32 mm.
B. Minimum vertical distance between two rows of bars shall be greater of value
1) 15 mm.
2) Maximum size of bar
3) 2/3 of nominal maximum size of coarse aggregates.
Example:-
#.Vertical distance of bars shall be greatest of
1) 15 mm
2) Max size of bar = 12 mm
3) 2/3 nominal max. size of CA = 2/3*20=13.33=14mm So take minimum vertical distance 15mm
#.Vertical distance of bars shall be greatest of
1) 15 mm.
2) Max size of bar = 16 mm
3) 2/3 nominal max. size of CA = 2/3*20= 13.33=14mm
So take min vertical distance = 16 mm
Good, But always remember there is a Cl 26.3.2 of IS 456 b which specific tell about the case when we use needle vibrator.
