Prevent dog from jumping the fence - cheap solution

  • The basic idea is to put a string or wire just above the top rail wrapped around 1 inch screws in each post. The dog won't get a steady footing on the top rail and will not feel comfortable jumping it. Has worked great for our dog that is a cattle dog mix for over 6 years. He is a little larger than a regular sized cattle dog.

    run a piece of PVC along the top with wire or cable inside. When the dog tries to jump, it will flip over and not give the dog the ability to get a foothold.

    I put BARB WIRE on top of my 4 ft chain link fence. Looks like a dog prison. SOB still climbs it!

    I tried this. My Corsos just busted it. It’s stretches a lot. I then hooked up an electric wire that I used for my goats. That worked instantly. They were already familiar with the livestock wires. Very low voltage too.

    I'm on Social Security , cash poor, and have a little house with a 6" wooden fence. I adopted a shelter dog who sat at attention looking at me as if we were old friends. He's actually a year old English Pointer with some pittie. He jumped out over and over no matter what I did, barking at our game population which is everywhere in the underbrush. He didn't run away, only bark and jump the fence.
    I'm 76 and can't run very fast. I decided for both of us to get 5 XL leashes and a martingale type collar, join the leashes, and just enjoy my dog. My granddaughter is a vet assistant and would be furious if I used anything shocking. She says is depresses dogs and encourages cancer later...they lose heart. Toto is a hunting dog, a country boy, and I love him. I give him lots of prey chasing inside the house and we have fun.
    He tested the tether twice and now has it down. It's long enough to pee and poop. There seemed no other way and we are getting along fine.

    My dog started to start jumping over the gate this morning - I am so fed up with her, and the problem is that it's an electric gate - I am really hoping that this method will work.

    I have a 9 month old Irish terrier/boxer mix and she's 46 lbs. Our HOA won't let us do hardly anything when it comes to installing privacy fencing and I'd rather not get an electric fence. It seems I may have to go to that route just in case.

      yup, i guess mine is smarter than his too !! every time i go out to fix weak spots and go back inside, i will catch him walking the perimeter looking for ANY weak spots and trying them. ok so i have a 4 1/2 foot chain link fence so my first attempt was running bailing wire ( what hay bales are tied with ) across the top in lengths that were the same as the fence sections. i put galv electrical pipes ( what electricians use ) along the vertical poles of the exhisting fence approx 3 feet higher than top post of fenceline. Didnt take long for him to get past that design, so i added 2 more strands of wire horizontally and secured them to each other vertically so they would not spread apart also securing the bottom horizontal wire to the actual fence. this was very sound and secure and i felt confident he wouldnt get past this design. WRONG !! next move was to feed 2 inch pvc pipe cut just a little shorter than the fence sections so if and when he jumped on them , they would roll and he wouldnt get a good grip to get over the top. this was placed on the top stand , i also bent the vertical tubing 30 degrees inward ( like the prisons ) then resucured it all back up. This actually worked for 3 weeks before he found a way to get UNDER the fence. I give up !!

    • @hotbam37
      @hotbam37 Před 4 lety +1

      @@chickenburrito22 not really. We make sure he is wearing his shock collar when outside and watch him. If he tries to jump over we vibrate his collar and now he doesnt try to do it as often. If he does get over we can get him back quickly with the shock collar. We tried putting a steel clothesline around the fence but that only helped marginally. Have considered putting an electric fence around the top as well

      Look at those coyote rollers, they make, people make them themselves too. Its basically a pipe that goes on top the fence that rolls when the dog tries to grab the top of the fence.

    And what if we don't have a post that sticks up higher than our fence? This is lame. The Rusty screw you're pointing at is not galvanized. Hence the rust...

    • @CaGirl93003
      @CaGirl93003 Před 3 lety

      Galvanized steel just has a thin coat of zinc to prohibit rust, it does not prevent rust, and will in fact rust over time as the coating wears. Particularly on nail heads if you drive them with a hammer that doesn’t have a smooth surface and it perforated or otherwise damages the head. Either way, it’s still not rust proof. So there’s that.
