    Charcoal over graphite power actually works pretty good, i use the powder to create the under tones and light shading then charcoal pencils for the darker finish work, as long as the graphite is put down to a level you can't see it's infamous "shine" you shouldn't have any problem although you'll have to use a softer grade charcoal than you'd would on clean paper. The trick is to not completely fill the paper's tooth with the graphite powder so the charcoal still has something to bite into, that takes a little time to use to and using the right paper is a must, velum bristol and most Canson papers have the right amount of tooth as does 300 series Strathmore. Mixed media, hot press water color and smooth bristol won't work and heavier (90 plus lb, 130 plus gsm) drawing papers can be a challenge as well.

    • @MesserCreations
      @MesserCreations  Před rokem +1

      I’ll have to try that. I’ve had good luck with Mix Media but I mostly draw with charcoal only. I haven’t drawn enough with mixing the two mediums to have a paper preference past Mix Media paper. Alway down to try new techniques though. Thanks for the info John 😊🙌🏻

    Maybe im slow, but does soft medium and hard (charcoal or graphite), mean the variances of shades of light and dark, or how soft or hard it feels on paper. When looking at the charcoal scale, the soft, medium and hard I didnt see any difference in shade or how it looked. The graphite scale it all looked the same to me til you got into the H's. Hard maybe looked lighter, but I honestly didnt see any differences. That really confuses me. I try to note similarities to make things easier but cant here. Like was thinking maybe the higher the number the darker the shade but all the numbers vary.

    • @MesserCreations
      @MesserCreations  Před 2 lety

      Thank you for asking about this Anna. When it comes to charcoal the less binder that is in the charcoal the lower of a value to typically get, (but not always)* it depends on the brand and type of charcoal you use. Also your pressure control that you use when applying the charcoal onto the paper will also play into how light or dark it appears. When it comes to graphite typically the softer the rating the lower the value and the higher the rating the lighter, again this has to do with the amount of binder infused into the graphite and the pressure control you use during your actual application. I hope that helps? Let me know if it doesn't and I can try to clarify more.

    • @MesserCreations
      @MesserCreations  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello, the range chart that I show in the video is more so one can see and understand which charcoals correlate best to graphite’s of the same consistency. So to answer your first question you can use them whenever you feel is necessary. You can use each range for different parts of your drawing. The biggest thing to remember is soft charcoal is for your base layers so naturally the graphite’s that correlate to the soft charcoal are the ones you would want to use with your soft charcoal. Medium charcoal is for building up your low values and solidifying your underlying form. Lastly your hard charcoal is for detail work. Hope that explains it better? Let me know and I can always clarify to help 😃 take care!
