Al Pacino - 1973 interview

- Drama critic Elliot Norton interviews actors Al Pacino (Richard III) and Paul Benedict (Duke of Buckingham), and director David Wheeler about a production of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” in the Church of the Covenant on Newbury St by the Theater Company of Boston. This production drew national attention because of Al Pacino, who had made his breakthrough the year before with The Godfather. Norton notes that Pacino started out opening night with a slight accent and he was nervous that the actor had “gone Mafia.” Pacino blames this on nerves, claiming that when he is nervous, he inadvertently slips into accents.
Pacino explains that he has always wanted to do Shakespeare, because of his love of language. He used to do soliloquies from Hamlet and Macbeth alone in his room and chose to perform Shakespeare scenes for acting classes. He is inspired by the language and feels that as an actor, “language serves you,” as opposed to the other way around. He believes that today people are lazy and do not open their mouths to speak, so this is an opportunity to really use language. Although this is his first professional Shakespeare production, he talks about performing the first half hour of Richard III at the Actor’s Studio three or four years prior. In this production, he did not use a director, which he claims is the “best way to do it,” casting a sheepish look at director David Wheeler.
Norton commends Pacino’s ability to balance playing the demon that kills his way to the crown and the comic that enjoys himself while opening up to the audience. Norton likes the way Pacino addresses the audience and sets it up as a ‘game’ in which he is enjoying himself and encourages the audience to do the same. Pacino feels that he connects so strongly with the audience that when he tells them about the crimes he committed, he starts to wonder about what they will do to him.
Other subjects that were discussed include the decision for modern costumes and the use of the church as a playing space.
This might sound hazardous and superficial but I’m going to say it anyway: Al Pacino is the most handsome man ever existed
Couldn’t agree more. He’s gorgeous
U Smoking crack
Griffin Jelly why? Ahah
you haven't seen me, bitch!
ur fucking correct
He can pass as the beatles member with that hair 😂
He actually reminds me of Paul McCartney in the 60s 😂
I felt the same 😃
Yeah, an American Beatles: Al as Paul; De Niro as George (The Quiet One), Jack Nicholson as Lennon, and maybe Cazale as Ringo.
Remind me of a young sly Stallone
krustykrabbbs he’s too cool to be a Beetle, or any bug, HE BURY THOSE COCKROACHES!!!!
He was prob one of the best looking actors in film ever
Godfather 2 especially
Dog Day Afternoon
@@redeemerl5212 Al in Godfather 2 is the most Clean Ice Cold Gangster ever seen on screen.
Hahaha.. guys think this because of his "cool factor" back then but ask almost any woman and she will tell you he was never hot or a considered good looking. My mom when I asked her she was like "eww no, he was great but no woman thought he was attractive" RObert Deniro was always the sexier one " ...

He's 33 there, and will be 80 next year
wow, he looked younger
ramirezannette0 no shit
His age simply doesn’t matter.....
Wow he looks like mid 20s
Next year he will 80 years old and his girlfriend will be 33... ironic
He was 33 in this interview but he easily looks like a 23 yo
@@kitkat914 You can't compare a young teen playing a child to an adult man...
Yup and today for 80 year old man he looked quite younger than many people at his age
No

Italian genes!
He was so handsome damn
He’s been beautiful all of his life, still is today but obviously he has aged, everyone does and everyone will.
Oooooh yeaaaaaah 🤒🥵
I watched Godfather last weekend and it blew my mind how attractive he was in the 70s lol. also, great movies.
@@bielsabas4407 he was so goodlooking in dog day afternoon as well 😍
@@khadeejahassan4949 I agree, handsome all of his life. Even today at 81
What I really like about Pacino is his eyes. It conveys both innocence and intimidation if he commands it. Look at his performance in the Godfather I, from the start he seemed so sweet and charming which gradually changed to someone you do not want to in the room with.
I love how shy he is... great actor.
I think he wanted to look polite
That’s how most mob bosses are.
@Luis Ferreira exactly,
@Luis Ferreira I take him over Robert Deniro any day.
Liz Flood he’s not shy just in deep thought
He's so beautiful omg..... I need to rewatch Godfather 1 so I can fall in love again.
ThatsCringe , he'd be flattered.
I fell in love... I LOVE his eyes and voice 💖
To think Jack Nicholson was actually supposed to play Michael and thankfully he turned it down
He was beautiful in the '70s. For those who say he looks shy, I get that feeling too because he looks down most of the time. That's a good thing because most actors are arrogants, he doesn't look like an arrogant person.
@Dushyant Kumar Do you mean when he's acting? Yes of course he's not shy in his movies , but maybe he was shy in real life when he was young.
@Mario Lisa Yes, I wouldn't call him aloof because he doesn't seem so snob to me.The interview is from the early '70s when his career was just starting.
@Dushyant Kumar you're right. Maybe he didn't feel very comfortable with the reporters and the interviews.
Al is adorable, even still is.
@@moghraliamneeson 👍

So rare to find interviews with him from this era. This is a real treasure.
I saw a good one where he talked about settling all family business including the heads of all the 5 families....oh no wait...

My left ear loved it!

ikr, what the hell was that all about
you can invert the headset/earphone. then your right ear will enjoy it too.
For viewers who'd want to insult this little passive agressive hipster hip hop millenial kid for his brilliant comment, keep in mind he is at least trying to educate himself by watching old school Al Pacino interviews which in my book is a rather good start.
That face, those eyes, that talent 💜
I look same
@@firstal3799 You wish...
He was really good looking, he had such beautiful eyes oh my god
I've not seen many interviews with him, he seems very quiet and shy, yet his work as an actor is so expressive... Definitely one of the best!
Man! this man Al Pacino very very handsome and good looking and acting skills are just of another level, love you Al
Yes he is a magnificent actor. Love him
He is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful actors to ever pass film industry
Al Pacino has that charm on his face that is so peaceful to watch. Right from The Godfather to The Irishman all his moves and dialogues are a treat to watch
I agree, even today hes still the same!!! And I'm glad that hes still working at 82!!!
@@Lushy260 It feels a little scary to know that he's 82 now

Bruh, he's the most handsome man during the '70s.
It makes me smile to see all these comments on how good looking the man is. He's a legend in my books. He's brought so much to the table
he's so soft spoken and careful with his words, you could tell there's real passion and love for his craft...and i looove those adorable smiles he makes while looking down
He was 33. He looked like 23 and sounded like 53 😂
Trueeee. 😄
Really 😲
So you mean he got hotter? I agree.
You kidding? He sounds like a baby here

Al Pacino has not the typical beauty standards, but he looks always so attractive
Some might even call it unconventional beauty; which in my opinion, is always the best.
He is Italian and is traditionally good looking from a Mediterranean standard.
@@firstal3799 I’m Italian and yes you can truly see mediterranean beauty in his face but for me he has something more unique than this
Those "typical beauty standards" are 99.9% wrong. And actually ugly. Especially for us girls.
Al is just gorgeous. 🖤
@@karmenwildheart666 "Typical beauty standards" are blond guys. YUCK.

Those eye...that nose ....that smile...i mean be really was the most handsome man😍
I know!! The nose 🥵🥵
His voice damn , his face his hair his eyes , everything abt this man if perfecttttttt
He reminds me of Italian Rainassance paintings
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! I always imagine that he is what a Roman god or dark angel would look like....
I miss how interviews used to be. Now everything is such high energy and people have their answers ready to go. So loud, bright and in your face. And god forbid anyone appear downbeat or "depressed". Whenever I watch older interviews (i.e. Dick Cavett etc) they seem like people just having a genuine conversation. They're not yelling into the camera. They're speaking slowly, taking time to answer, taking time to let the other finish their thought. It just seems like an environment that fosters REAL interviews with interesting conversations.
.....Also this has nothing to do with anything but god DAMN Al Pacino was fine as hell back in the day. I wish I could time travel back to the early 70s just so I could let Pacino destroy me lol
Charming, articulate, unassuming, boyish, learned. The video is 50 years old and Al Pacino still got it goin' on.
I was distracted by Abraham Lincoln sitting next to him
that's his twin brother Gabe.
LOL!!
Wow😂😂😂
@@spockboy he has no siblings
Hahahah
He was so beautiful and his eyes mesmerizing.
My brother was a dead ringer for Mr. Pacino. He would always be stopped when we were in NYC. People wanted his autograph. RIP my dear PJ.
Al has a gorgeous smile ♥️
I'm 58 years old. Back in the 70s when I was 12 years old and all of my friends were having their first celebrity crush on Leif Garret I secretly was crushing on Al Pacino
I can’t imagine how fun it must’ve been to grow up in that time 🥹 i love Al, it would’ve been so fun to just go to the movies and watch his films at the peak of his powers. He really is an incredible actor, and i’m so fond of the 1970s
He was very handsome
His face is so perfect. Those eyes, nose, lips, smile, voice, talent, personality was so wonderful. Most handsome and sexiest man in 70s. Very cute.
OMG so handsome!
I loooooveee this Alpacino look, the long messy hair, the clean face, and his big eyes accentuated by the liner on his lashes and top it with the soft voice and mannerisms, is more on the *“beautiful”* side than the “handsome” one, *almost androgynous, damn.*
You had me with ya until you said androgynous... he's anything but androgynous. In fact, I'd say that he was the perfect representation of a beautiful man. And beautiful doesn't mean feminine, it means, well, magnetic or mesmerizing! He was almost angelic, like one of those Roman sculptures or Renaissance paintings. In fact I would even say that he reminds of what a Roman god must like look, or like a dark angel... Anyways, I'm getting too poetic here. Pacino was just a damn gorgeous man who oozed masculinity. And not that stereotypical masculinity (like macho), he had an aura of silent power and charisma in his characters. Even as Tony Montana, who is one of his wildest characters...
He doesn’t not look androgynous. Tilda Swinton and Rosalinda Celentano are androgynous. Al is just a beautiful man.
Calm down. She said almost ans as a compliment. I am a huge Al fan and I kinda agreem . Al has had various looks throughout his career
Hee he does look kinda feminine but not in a bad way. By mid 80's his voice, personality and looks all turned very hard - but In a good way. In dog day afternoon he looks one of those pretty Italian boys. In Gidfather 1 and 2 he looks like a tough handsome med type. In scent of a woman he looks a magnetic and charismatic older tycoon type.
@@firstal3799 I don't know why people need to take feminine as being a negative label, and masculine being the 'superior'. Sounds a lot like benevolent sexism to me (this isn't towards you specifically, just to note).
Yes agree. One can appreciate all kinds of beauty. Like young Al had a boyish charm. Doesn't mean one cannot say Clint Eastsood wasn't good looking for example
He's an articulate man, who loves culture languages expression and has observed society from very close, bringing all that onto the big screen for us to really appreciate fine acting
I’ve always thought what makes him a magnetic actor is his combination of strength and sensitivity, very rare, oh and being a towering talent and drop dead gorgeous probably helped (bit of a fan) ☺️☺️✌🏻🌹🏴
Holy hell.... lookin at his mannerism and how he talks, he really hasn't changed much. Look at his recent interview and he's still the same. Love you Al!!
I agree, Al is still the same!!!!! I've noticed that when I watched his Jimmy Kimmel interview
There was a moment too when his voice was raspy here, sounded like how he does now
he was a beautiful man ^^
He was. He's still not bad tho.
He was SOOO cute..
He still is.
What a beautiful man Al once was. I can't stop staring at his perfect countenance.
Can pass as a lead singer or guitarist in a 70's rock band. The guy is legend!
Hard to believe this is tony Montana. Such a genius.
exactly 10 years before Tony Montana
@@chriswoosley3883 I honestly love Tony Montana for being so wild, and dare I say that Al Pacino was sexy in Scarface...
Legendary actor, adorably humble, and the most gorgeous man in the world ❤
That's why he is a fantastic actor.
He always loved ACT.
He loved and he still loves it.
For me Al Pacino is the most handsome and sexy man ever existed....And his acting is magical... I love him ❤
Al Pacino looks like if George Harrison and Paul McCartney had a baby. What manly facial features from the cheekbones to chin.
And that baby was the Godfather.
Two men can't have a baby...
Throw in John's intellect and Ringo's height, and the Beatles as Pacino image, is complete.
i always thought his eyes or mouth expressions look like paul mccartney’s, he should play paul mccartney if they ever make a movie about him
This is a great find. Al is so thoughtful and well-spoken here.
he is still like that today, though he was more quiet back then
I know it's common for a person's voice to change when they get older, but it's still crazy to me just how much his changed from this interview in 1973 at age 33, to the interview he did 10 years later.
Any reason his changed? Normally the change from 33 to 43 is imperceptible. The difference in my parents' voices in their 70s compared to their 30s is pretty mild.
@@DrCasey my personal theory is that the voice change stems from the amount of yelling in film he did in that 10 year span lmaoo
with all the alcohol and drugs people take in the 70s, 10 years were like 20 of this era
@@DrCasey smoking 2
his interviews at 43, he sounds th eexact same - only in the 90s he sounds different and its only slightly, his voice isnt deeper - just rougher, effected by chain smoking. currently in 2000s - 2023 its pretty much normal again if you study his work
I love him. He is my favorite actor. He looks so young. Wow! Time does go by fast.
He is a legend with beautiful eyes and hair great character.✝️🙏🏽❤️💐
I love how quiet the background as there are no people. It's so good to listen to people without music and what else do you need if Al is speaking. His voice is enough.
A Perfect Man With Perfect Acting Skills.
...alot of the young , shy and soft spoken AL from his "godfather" era always reminds a mystery... thankyou for this footage!!
This al pacino guy is very charming! He should get into acting!
So humble, so great. Enough said.
I saw him on stage about 20 years ago. He was brilliant. He's an exciting actor to watch live.

One of the most handsome and talented men back in those days!!! 😍😍😍
I seen Al in person at the Booth Theater in New York 1983 10 years after this interview, at the Booth he did American Buffalo. I still have the playbill. When he came out the back door, there we were waiting. Only 5’7 “but appears magnificent on screen. As he drove off in his black Cherokee Jeep my wife nearly got whacked by the front bumper. Here he just finished Michael Corleone, and was getting ready to do Serpico, Go t not grown. Al is an icon method Actor under Charlie Laughton, and Lee Strasberg. All will go down as the best Actor ever because of the rolls he chose.
He radiates that energy of " might be very romantic toward his lover"
Probably, my big impossible crush ❤️ Love u, Al.

Thank you so very much for posting this. As a student of Literature, I can't tell you how happy I feel to know that Pacino had a great liking for Shakespeare especially the number of times he mentioned Hamlet's soliloquies... If I had a time machine, I'd love to go back to 60s and 70s to be in the era of the young Al Pacino and Robert Redford ... two people I have GREAT admiration for as actors and as humans...
I would have a hard time pronouncing soliloquoes. Was difficult typing as well

Young Al Pacino was so handsome.
he is the greatest and handsome actor in that time
My favourite actor ever, truly a legend♥️

I see Al Pacino...I Click.
It's great that Al loved the theatre. Here, he is about to do Richard III, Shakespeare. No matter how successful he became in film, he would always return to the stage, his first love. A brilliant actor, and an engaging man.
That's what I respect & admire most about Al Pacino, he's always referred to himself as an actor not a movie star! But as we know he navigates both with equal aplomb! BTW Richard III was amazing & you simply must see Wilde Salome & Salome! Incredible!
Thats so amazing. He is such a great actor and his admiration for theatre makes him a legend, I think.
It’s so sad we don’t have more interviews from this era. Al was always just a mystery and wanted his privacy, and then he expressed his emotions and gave everything to his performances. it says a lot when even decades later we still admire and love Al and all the rich work he’s given us. His face and eyes are so…. human. there’s no one to touch him, even among his contemporaries. A hundred years, Al 🤍👏🏼
His hair is EVERYTHING
Cristina Marie , it was too hard to overlook. He had it short for The Godfather the previous years, grew it, but then he trimmed it again for The Godfather Part II.
i love it so much
his voice is more beautiful than any other feature Al possesses!
What about his F A C E ???
Everything about him is beautiful but I would say his eyes are the most gorgeous 👀🖤
I wish I had met him at his young age
It's interesting, Al has always had a thing for having a scarf around him like here, you can see it all throughout his career.
