You can see that he cares about his motorcycle. He was absolutely sick when Jay said the seat was uncomfortable. He looked like he wanted to tear it off and throw it at someone. (at 10:44)

It did look like it was driving his crotch into the tank. That would drive me crazy obviously.
The seat is a poor design. There is not enough room to adjust your riding position and no where for a passenger to sit.

Jay should contact Arai for a custom made helmet. Or perhaps an AGV corsa will fit his chin completely inside.

To negative engineers.... Even if Jay doesn't have the education of a mechanical engineer, he is sharing for free his vehicles, so that we can see them and have an idea what they have in them and what he does and doesn't like about them and often the story behind them. Seriously... You engineers who are busy cringing because he is not an engineer (nor has he claimed to be), he still has alot nicer garage then you do.He is doing what he likes with his life, and so far it has not been too shabby. If I could be as ignorant as you are saying he is, and still have all those cool cars, I would be chuckling at your remarks.

From an engineering point of view it makes little sense to have shift-able gears, let alone 6 of them. In petrol vehicles it is needed as a torque multiplier with the drawback to "eat up" lots of power through friction. Moreover the more gears the more friction, wight and bulk. With an electric motor, which has nearly constant torque, you have no benefits but get all the drawbacks. If you want to innovate you should not be nostalgic about the old ways to control a machine. What would make more sense is to have an "electronic clutch" which enables the rider to control how much torque he wants to apply (naturally this would act on the electrical feed to the motor, there would be no need for an actual clutch there).
+yoshyoka I have listened to the electric motor's high pitch wining and it is a little irritating. I could see sacrificing power for reduction in high pitch wine. And I would hope that the additional leverage and reduction in RPM's provided by the transmission, we would also get a reduction in heat and thus not need to worry about letting the engine cool down.
+Roller Bearing Crank there is a difference between putting am auxiliary recovery motor on a car which you have to make heavier by regulation and trying to reach max efficiency. I even don‘t recall since when F1 cars are mainly worried about fuel efficiency. I rest my case.

Electric, when they were pushed hard like at the racetrack will reduce power output to protect battery from overheating. Tesla lasted less than a half the course ( car & driver), I think this is where the transmission comes in besides MT is more fun.
I think India should adopt these bikes

I dig it, but the range and lack of noise worries me a lot. Sometimes I'd go for 8-9 hour day rides in the 100-150 mile range just running through the canyons. The other issue noise.. A LOT of saving your butt on a motorcycle in the city is the loud noise of your bike warning others!
you forgot the quick charge thing.. ive seen them at macdonalds etc here.. so take a dump, have a burger.. and continue...
It's not a quick charge out of a standard charging port. Only out of the new standards for tesla's, Volt, etc. Out of a standard you would need an hour or two. with that said this is the age old argument of electrics. I believe this is probably meant more as a commuter bike than a weekend warrior. but with the high efficiency in motorcycles already and the lack of noise from the bike to aid in day to day commuting I'm not quite sold.

too long, its not that fast food, but its not every mcdee, but there are a few of these near restaurants/hotels next to the highway, i could probarbly drive from place to place.. if i take a dump/piss/meal at each one, i could go on forever...

I own 3 helmets only and I am by no mean an expert at helmetology(not an actual ward) but I think Jay is either using his helmet wrong(need to pull the front downwards) or his chin is just too big... nobody should ride with half of their mandible hanging out from their helmet.
He can get a custom one if he wanted to
Bell makes custom helmets.
On another note. Brammo was bought by Victory Brand (Polaris) years ago - little improvements were made besides changing the name and looks- basically at that point the motorcycle was very obsolete. Polaris shut down the Victory brand and this motorcycle. :(
Gorgeous ride. Really would love to try one of these electric bikes one day. I was supposed to try the Zero electric bike out a few years back, but I sort of forgot as I had problems with my own rides.
Fun to go past the 5 bucks a gallon sign you say. I would go fill up fast. It costs equivalent to about 11 here in the uk.
LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES is a common bumper sticker I see. I was always amazed when my dad would pull up on his modern hondas (gas engines) because they were so quiet. I would be scared to ride this thing in a heavy traffic area based on the fact that most cagers don't see us anyway....now they wont have a chance to hear you either.... Neat idea though.
Most people with those stickers don't wear helmets or gear.
I'd rather put my safety in the performance of the machine to aid in avoiding the accident all together. Loud pipes don't save lives, being able to accelerate away, avoid swiftly and brake quickly does.
Only a reckless rider will require to make noise to be seen. A safe rider don't put themselves in that unsafe situation in the first place

jay`s chin is not fit for the arai helmet... or any other helmet...
I don't know much about motorcycles but as a person living in a big city, considering one for my next mode of transport, to my tastes, this is an especially cool looking bike. I love the opposing silver pieces set onto the body (are those functional?), and the orthogonality & harder edges overall, from the headlamp to the seat/saddle shape. I've always liked English car design and this, similarly, doesn't look too pretty or precious.

Same here in Australia.
Thing is though, i went t Central/Eastern Europe 5 years ago, and the prices were about the same, except people ear about the 10-15% of what we earn here.

Cost of healthcare, education, childcare etc is low and wages for normal workers are good so 10 bucks a gallon is affordable. But no matter where you live in the world everyone complains about the gas price.

Best electric motorcycle ive seen due to the clutch system but still these smart engineers knows the issue what a real motorcyclists having is people dont hear you so you need a sound everytime you squees that throttle dont realy care from this point what it sounds like it. Could be from Britney spears or lil john the fact is people need to hear the motorcycle and whats with the gas tank design you dont use gas so why have a tank and yea the seat needs to redesign what else price yea thats right the price you bring something that the publice dont even like but yet your price is their with a conventional motorcycle " a real motorcycle" you start of dirt cheap if you wanna capture the market so not only I have to back engineer your design but I have to teach you about marketing too wow I should start creating vehicles because I know what the public want you people is just all about money

I liked the video, especially the feedback from Jay driving the bike. I would like to go electric but I'll probably wait a few years until we know reliable the bikes batteries and engines are.
I took a pic of an Empulse R at Airventure, the rider was using it to get around the airshow grounds very cool bike.
Glad Jay's in the "electric vehicles need transmissions" camp. I swear, I'll never understand why electric vehicle makers can't get it through their heads that just because you CAN get away with not having a transmission, that doesn't mean you SHOULD.
electric vehicles do not need transmissions and Jay never said they do. He just said he liked the feature. The only time an electric vehicle needs a transmission, is to breach ridiculous speeds. A single speed works fine up to practically any real-world highway speed - unless your goal is to get arrested.
It's less moving parts, less maintenance, less that can go wrong, cheaper servicing, etc. You name it, a transmission is only necessary for an ICE.
Proof is in the pudding; the Zero S has no transmission and it works just fine. The Tesla has no transmission, and they work fine. The world's fastest production electric motorcycle the Lightning LS-218, guess what, it's single speed direct-drive also. And it can reach 60 in less than 2 seconds and tops out at 218 mph. It may even possibly be the fastest 'production/market-sold-to-average-consumer' motorcycle available.

They do use transmission in power tools for precision. May be worth re evaluating if needed or not. I doubt so but maybe.
+Will Davis there are some benefits to trannys with electrics - motors do have an efficiency curve, so a trans can keep it in that peak efficiency for a greater speed range. also means you can get away with cheaper components (mainly the controller) as the most 'difficult' zone for a controller to run a motor is at low speed, high loads (think trials type riding conditions, or a car towing something up a steep hill at low speed). A good enough controller wont care, but they'll cost more/be bigger than one that will do fine with the addition of a 2-3 speed trans. any more than 3 is gonna be pretty useless though, and its gotta be good enough that the losses from the transmission dont negate the efficiency gains in the motor and controller.

Do you mean mount solar panels on the bike? If so, that won't work sadly. Not enough surface area. No matter how efficient your panels are, there's only 1kw per square meter of surface hit by sunlight.
What would work is covering the roof of the garage in solar panels and then plugging the bike into that while parked.
I've forgotten more about cars, trucks, and motorcycles then Leno has ever known.

As a long-time mechanical engineer, I cringe every time Jay attempts to talk about physics. Motor torque & power are not the same thing, Jay!

Many times he's just impromptu speaking while thinking about the dynamics of filming while thinking about that person climbing out a car, just ahead, while thinking about how much his insurance will have to pay if he makes a mistake.
+SIMKINETICS You're right. Please produce, for free, "SIMKNETICS' Garage" and show your bikes, and the many others to which you have access, and integrate physics lessons into your videos. I recommend you limit the physics to that of which you are absolutely certain.. There are tens of thousands of individuals in the US, working as professors at colleges and universities, and in private industry, who have doctoral degrees in Physics. I'm gonna guess that a good number of them know a lot more physics, and understand what they know, a lot better than you. But you know that. You encountered a few of these Ph.D.s when they taught you physics "a long-time ago."
Too bad you didn't make it to graduate school at a top rated program in Physics (e.g., Cal Berkley; Cal Tech, MIT, Harvard, Stanford) or at any major university. You'd have learned in the first week that it's is far, far easier to criticize the work of others than it is to do better your self.
On a separate matter, I've noticed a correlation between critical comments, outright trolling, and anonymity. Mean-spirited critics with nothing constructive to say seldom post using their names, preferring to remain hidden. Why are you afraid to step out into the sunshine when you post?
John Hocking Yeah, if I had a time-machine, I'd have taken my academic experience much more seriously. As it stood, the Viet Nam War draft & subsequent raising of a family with its financial demands interfered more than it should have. Fortunately, I had a fantastic engineering career with some first-rate tutoring by alumni from such universities as you've mentioned. In recognition of what I missed, I strongly encouraged my kids to get a great scientific education, which they did! ...maybe *that's* a time machine of sorts. Nonetheless, I could hold my own in Newtonian Physics well enough to contribute to some very interesting technologies. It's important to understand that college is a starting point from which one's education continues. I was intent on capitalizing on at least the fundamentals of the physics & maths that I did well on in H.S. and a few years of college. In turn, I was given the title of Engineer for decades because I was sure about enough without pretense, without padding my resume`, without avoiding what I could learn from books & great colleagues.
+SIMKINETICS I really think he knows, it's just one of these things that have stuck as figure of speech. For instance I regularly catch myself saying the sun goes up or comes down, while of course I know it's standing still.
Or power in electrical terms, I know the relationship between voltage, amperage and ohm, yet I keep being lazy and just say "power" as a term for both voltage and current :)

not a fan of the transmission its unnecessary, its a minor pet peeve of mine when machines pretend to be something else like a CVT that shifts like its a normal automatic, RPM of induction motors have no impact on efficiency, if you want to have fun going through gears just get a normal bike
+MrStickyPete unless the lower RPM's means less high pitch wining, if so, I'll take all the complexity just to have a more quiet machine. For me, definitely worth it.

+MrStickyPete To each their own... if I ever buy an electric motorcycle it better have gears, otherwise not interested. It might not be practical or necessary but flipping up and down the gearbox is in itself half of the fun in riding.
MrStickyPete just listening to an electric motor tells me the higher the rpms, the louder and higher pitch the sound coming from the electric motor. Therefore if gears allow the bike to operate with lower rpms not only is the sound produced going to be more quiet, but less high pitched and I would think less stress on the engine and less heat produced.
Old news now,Harley-Davidson Livewire is much better!
The Live has a tiny bit more go, but it's also heavier, and i'm sure it'll have an even smaller range than 108 miles.

For Christ's sake Jay, get a properly sized helmet. Your mouth is below the chin protector and your eyes can barely see on top of the nose guard. Try an Arai chaser series at your size, much more comfy.

The transmission is EXCELLENT !!! How many of Jay's excellent shows have I seen, and I use the word "excellent" respectfully even though the word is understating his shows, where the electric vehicle is quiet but you can hear the high frequency sound of the engine...elephant in the room, while with the Brammo it was a TRULY quiet soothing sound !!!!!! I H A V E T O G E T O N E OF THESE BIKES!!!!!!! lOVE IT!!!
that helmet is not on correctly.... and I feel like an electric motorcycle is dangerous. nobody will hear you coming so you're more likely to be hit.
Agreed, Bob. I ride a stock sportbike. But if the music is played in addition to the sound deadening material in the more luxury cars, add to that some people being distracted and not paying attention, they would miss it. :)
I commute every day on my bike, day/night, rain/shine. I've seen many, it's easy to spot when someone is startled when I come by near them.
What an awesome bike. We are on the verge of a real "Golden Era".

Awesome that it regenerates power when off the throttle and it has a transmission and chain O_O perfect electric bike!!
On a side note for anyone viewing this in 2018+ they are under the Victory brand name now since they were acquired by Cummins in case anyone was wondering and about $20k. So look up Victorymotorcycles for the latest 2016 model.

One of the most important parts of a motorcycle is the seat in my opinion. I'm thinking that the simplicity and less need for maintenance will help move electrics ahead.
Would love it if they did shows or gave free test drives so that we can feel how it is and how it would feel where we live. So if you can please bring it to Seattle. Thank you. The coolest EV bike so far.
I think it's to ease people into riding something that looks familiar. the Enertia looks pretty funky, I'm sure as it evolves, we'll get some crazy designs.

what are the precautions to be taken on an electric bike as I saw electric bike videos like zero , mission , ktm, ego,ls,etc
it looks amazing, altough im more of traditional ice's this things look absolutely amazing very quiet for folks that ride bike just to clear their mind, the only drawback i see is the buzz it makes.
Of course there is. Bikes have been refined around ICE engines, so there is room for the radiator, the exhaust, the fuel tank, and the airbox.
Honda even reinvented the wheel with the NC700X, which replaces the gas tank with a storage bin that can fit an XXL helmet.
One thing that would be great to see is a reclining motorcycle with a low seated rider. The challenge of where to put the engine and plumbing was always a problem, but with electric perhaps there is more flexibility here.

He was given that helmet from the manufacturer, and did a very good video on fitting helmets, may be some of you should watch it. Have a look in the mirror, then look at Jay's chin and compare it to your version. Helmets are designed to protect heads, not that little bit under the chin. I like this electric bike also, about time electrics came out with gearbox's. I always thought it was a cop out not having a proper box due to the torque of electrics. Must be way more efficient. Love Jay's work.
I'm quite new to looking into electric vehicles because they have never really interested me but this bike is different. I am liking the features on this but I know little about the in's and out's of electric driving. How do I charge it? If I decide to pack some small stuff and take a short road trip somewhere but I would need to charge it when I arrived at my new destination how could I do that? Is there something adapter to allow me to plug it into something or what? I did read online that you can plug it into an electric station of some sort but those definitely don't exist where I drive.. lol

Yes there is a motorcycle like that. Check out Lito Green Motion's Sora electric motrcycle. They won one of the most prestigious price in Germany for the design and there patented Safe Range System.

there'll are sound generators in development that will allow you to choose several different sound maps. V8 Monday, 2-stroke RG500 tuesday.
