Joel Telling, the 3D Printing Nerd, came to the rescue by printing a repair part for my Playmobil trainset, which is part of my annual holiday display. I have been collecting Playmobil toys since I was 5, and it is awesome to know there are 3d Printable fixes for some of my irreplaceable childhood memories. In this video, Joel teaches me the basics of 3d Printing, something I hadn't really considered a skillset I'd need until very recently. As it turns out, three dimensional printing would actually hugely useful for me in my daily life, whether it be printing replacement parts for plastic items that normally couldn't be repaired, printing investment molds for casting, printing decals and other parts for my 1953 truck I'm restoring, printing hose and irrigation parts and planters for the farm... the possibilities are endless, and I'm really looking forward to teaming up with Joel for more 3d printed projects!

I have that same train set. Bought it for my daughter over 25 years ago
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me.
@Marcelo Jamari Instablaster =)
Being a relatively new to 3D printing person, it’s so much fun to see a brand new person learning how it works.
Why was I not told that a direct result of purchasing a 3D printer could be cookies!!!! This seems like a huge oversight in 3d printer marketing. I've been debating getting a small one just to play with. I think it might be time. Cheers!
HUGE OVERSIGHT!
Buy a Prusa get gummy bears double profit.
Expensive toys, plastic is toxic would not use it ,metal cutters are inexpensive and readily available
Edward Alamo I’m guessing you don’t have a 3D printer because plastic isn’t toxic, if it was, millions of people would’ve died and I’m selling my 3D prints to earn money soooo.....
there is one thing that i like the most it is , genuine, amazing, creatives, down to earth people, who are willing to share with us and make us better person after it's all done...and let me tell you, you are one of those amazing girl, just like your BFF April. i am a (let say, older) Laurentians, Québec, Canada fan and will always be...thank you so much Mademoiselle, (miss) for taking the time to share what i consider, that amazing life you have decided to live...keep them coming please. Thank You Anne.
Thank you so much for your kind words!
You two have great video personalities! Your simple explanations and illustrations helped me understand a lot. A few years ago I went to a high-end woodshop store to look around. They had a few CNC home shop machines in the 4-6k dollar range. A guy at the store told me he did not believe real woodworkers used these machines much. This, as we talked about an electric table. The electric table saw is a must-have in today's shops. The point is that new tools come along all the time. Do not get locked into an idea that limits creative masterpieces. My final, final point is... I want one of these, NOW!
I made a lot stuff for my wood working, Printed pieces to square my Boxes and frames with Clamps, Jigs to router around for inlays and etc, Organizers for my tools in the shop, Vacuum adapters, quick Shims, plus near anything you can think of, not counting stuff for my house and hobbies.
Her enthusiasm is adorably contagious.
The juxtaposition of the state of the art 3D printer with that huge old bandsaw in the background is really cool.
Awesome Anne! I guess this means we are going to see more 3d printing on your channel. Love that you are constantly acquiring news skills!
Thanks so much! For now, the only printing you'll likely see is with Joel, because with him so close, it doesn't make much sense for me to invest in a printer right now, but he and I have a lot of project ideas up our sleeves, so some fun stuff will definitely be coming.
I love woodworking, but my 3D printer has been used more in the last year than my table saw lol. Love my 3D printer. Currently printing some miter runners for table saw jigs. Finding a way to combine the two hobbies.
Very cool! Like the first time I saw a plotter work. I knew nothing about 3d printing. The possibilities are endless. Thanks for the sharing this!
Yeah that is exactly how I'd put it too! So fascinating.
Wow. The dynamics of you together plus the content of this 3D printer made it impossible for me to stop watching.
You can use a 3D printer to design and print jigs! I have a few that I haven't printed yet. Like custom cabinet handle drill guides.
Awesome stuff Anne! 👍🏻👊🏻 The amount of, and usefulness of the information gleaned from your questions to Joel is so great it makes getting into 3D printing seem much less insurmountable (at least for me) ..... Also, besides for being punny, you just always seem to exude joy and I can't seem watch one of your videos without wanting to give you a hug! 🤗 Typically my face hurts from smiling after watching 😊.... I don't have any Playmobil currently, however it is a cherished part of my childhood memories.
I love that you had Plamobil too Fred! I'm glad the joy comes through. My middle name is actually Joy. My mom always called me Anne, full of Joy.
@@AnneofAllTrades That middle name is perfect! 🙂
What a perfect pair for explaining a complex subject.
Anne, you’re a star. Keep being your self.
My friend makes metal castings from printed plastic for the jewelry business. He might be able to cast your emblems, or you might find the same skills closer than Albuquerque ;) Solid emblems would def give them the classic feel.
Pretty neat to watch as someone who has only worked with SLA printers. They're quite different, using a liquid resin instead of the plastic filament. They produce models with much finer detail, but they're usually more fragile so they produce less useful objects but better decorative objects.
Just found this, researching 3D printers on YT (late adopter!). Really helpful. Thank you both. Cheers.
I’ve used my 3D printer to make dovetail marking gauges. It’s so handy to make quick tools for wood work.
Oh that’s a great idea!!
I just got a 3D printer at Thanksgiving. It's so COOL! I just printed a Chihuahua that's really adorable. I also printed a small set of collets and a collet holder that serve as drill bit stops. I'm finding so many uses for it now.
That's awesome! Have fun with it!
I get a lot of educational entertainment (and knowledge) out of Anne's Channel. Love it :)
Thanks so much for the support!
LOVE seeing you jump round and he is so focused lol
OMG, Anne is so cute... She's so excited about 3D printing. This video is awesome, for some reason!!!
Her curiosity is so adorable.
how cool i wish i had this
I use my 3D printer mostly for making replacement parts and various tools or jigs. I'm going to start experimenting with lost PLA casting (which might be good for your truck emblems).
Yeah Joel and I have talked a lot about lost PLA casting and we are definitely going to try it.
Found your channel because of the 3D Printing tag. Subscribed to learn more about what you do... Regarding the coupler for your Playmobile train set. its known as a "Hook and Loop" coupler and is still in use in G scale (Garden Scale or Large Scale) trains.
WOAH! That's fascinating! Thanks for the sub!
So enjoyable to watch you learn Annie. Nice little machine.
Thanks for taking the time! Glad you enjoyed it!!
I am amazed at all of the skills you are developing and sharing when your subscribers. I don't know how you find enough time in the day to do everything you do. You're truly an inspiration.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
puns for days, sponge bob insert, calling him out cleaning his screen, seemingly excited about tech, I mean you were genuinely smiling the whole time. I have yet to chuckle at youtube videos as much as I do yours. well done :)
I awoke this morning to a notification for this video. It has made my day already!
I love your channel. Your content and your personality make following your projects so very enjoyable.
As a maker with many years of woodworking, as well as all things mechanical, electrical, etc., I got into digital fabrication a couple of years ago. CAD/CAM, 3D printing and CNC machining have all agreed so much to my craft and, in fact, my life.
It was a joy to watch your introduction to 3D printing. You reactions were priceless.
Thanks for sharing your journey with the world. You're contributing so much to do many. Keep up the great work.
P.S. Everyone interested in 3D printing should check out Joel's channel, 3D Printing Nerd. He's amazing.
Thanks so much for the kind words John! So glad you're liking the channel.
I'm honestly shocked those kittens didn't attack that printer! 😄
There were some near misses...
Never in all my time did I think I was see Anne and Joel together in a video
soooo? Everything you never hoped and dreamed it would be?
@@AnneofAllTrades Absolutely! A combination I never knew I needed!
Because of course alpaca cookie cutters!! Love it! And oh my gosh the kittens!!
Joel sent me here. Subscribed. Waiting on the honey project... Rolling pin fixed soon I hope
Thanks Glenn! Hoping to get the centrifuge up and running this week!
Good Video! if you are going to learn 3D Printing Joel is your man to teach you. He's a good guy!
He sure is that!
Very nice shop ! Very kool Truck too ! Love your website as well - Thank you for sharing.
I like your button pushing sound effects.

Anne, you did a great job of presenting this !!! Thanks so much, Cliff
Thanks for taking the time Cliff!
There's some pla with real stainless steel in. Or aluminum. Bronze. Wood, silk pla colors to.
also Could be worth trying. 3d printers can print the food directly.
You are a lovely, classy, high quality lady and your videos reflect that, enjoyed learning about the 3D printer and will head over to subscribe to Joel ~
P.S. I have an 027 gauge set my dad got me when I was a kid (a very long time ago) and it’s missing a few pieces, the possibilities ARE endless!
That was the best information I've ever received on how a 3D printer should work. Thank you!
bought one to make custom 3d printed parts for a cnc router i'm building. I found out that you can also make magical unicorns as i did for my granddaughter, although it did take her some time to get the magic working.
ha! That's so sweet.
Super cute! Love your enthusiasm!
Thank you!
Great video and presentation. Thanks for sharing.
Joel is a good nerd, able to explain the basic things in a very simple way.
The best kind in my book!
Lol my kid would be thrilled to play with that train set.
Hahaha no kids are allowed to play with this trainset... aside from me of course ;)
Anne, on Joel's video you had trouble getting the train on the tracks, you may have just been in a hurry but as someone who had HO and N scale trains and a number of toy trains for my kids I have a couple of tips that I think make things easier. First, I like to tilt the car just a little and get the wheels on one side lined up just right, then gently set it on the track. Also after you think you have it on right just run it back and forth on the tracks a couple times by hand before you hook it to your train.
Came here because of Joel, subscribed to learn some trades.
Same
I'm really proud of Joel for doing this beginners video. cause most of us are stuck on einstein mode. Great Job JOEL!
Nice video .... Joel rocks ;-)
Wood working, Trains and 3D printing lol what more is there HA.. Great video!
Thank you!
ITS COMING!!!! Soon a video abut that AWESOME Truck!!!
YEAH BUDDY!
That's pretty cool, I'm not quite sure how it all works, but you can't beat the results, Thanks for sharing
I love Joel and his channel. This was just a great combination for the both of you.
Joel is awesome!
Why did I not think of using weed wackier string in my 3D printer. Hell yeah. I’m gonna try it!
Just do it in a well ventilated area ;)
A friend of mine prints everything at his home including electrical boxes, pegboard devices, his wallet and more. He used to work with a titanium 3D printer and I regret not putting in some orders. He could have made some great cutting tools. Other folks I know make intricate & strong platforms for small satellites out of aluminum. It shouldn't be long before someone starts using these printers to make custom metal parts for restoration.
I'm super excited about that possibility! I think there's already printers that do that to some extent but I'm excited for the technology to improve. You better believe I'll be first in line for anything that can print working parts for my truck!!
Could you imagine all the templates and jigs we make on site per hinges pivot hinges plates etc for our router... Anne do some cool templates and give them away( to me of course 😉
hahaha that's a bit far off, but possible :)
Came here from Joel. Subbed for the incredible variation of content.
Thanks so much! Sure hope you enjoy it!!
brief bel canto 'alpaca' at 15:07...sweet softfurry voice too match your 3d blacksmithing ironys ( dyslectic license ) ALOHA
Inspired me to make my channel too will upload vids soon printer is on its way!
I'm a little confused about the software needed to turn an image into an object for printing. does it come with the machine or do i need to purchase it separately? and what type of images can be transformed?
What you're describing is called a slicer.
It takes your 3D design (that you've made in a program such as the Tinkercad website) and slices it into layers for your printer to lay down.
Usually printers will come paired with a slicer, but you could use a slicer like Cura, which is usually bundled with the Ultimaker brands of 3D printers (Shout-out Martijn; my cuzzy that works at Ultimaker).
Cura comes with printing profiles for various printers, but if your model of printer isn't listed, you could create a custom profile by entering a few simple details of your 3D printer (bed size, nozzle diameter & material, printing material type, etc.).
Not all slicers are created equal, and if you've purchased a cheap 3D printer with a pants slicer, it may behoove you to try different software to improve print quality.
Whaaaat? No leg lamp cameo? :) Great video Anne!
Hahaha I didn't even think of that!
Leg lamp I THINK is visible in the video on my channel!
@@3DPrintingNerd Yup! That's where I noticed it. Great video as well!
Still cringing from the sawstop soil transplant! :P
hahahaha me too
love 3d printing its fun. but time consuming and gets to be a drag sometimes on the lower end machines. BUT its a fun experience. but anne you are just adorable :)
How about Longer 3D Printers? Just saw some selling on Amazon and looks great!
Ain't it a wonderful world - at least some times?
*talks about a device to create anything 3D shaped and working in "plastic" You could possibly think of ... like an Alpacca shaped cooky cutter, of all things.
* "... oh, You can make chess pieces ... ??" 😂
Creativity needs possibilities - give Your kids access to Your workshops!
Cool! I never thought I’d see you and a 3D printer in the same picture.
I’d be interested in seeing your friend metallize your decal.
Btw, my kitten runs to investigate my printer whenever I turn it on. She doesn’t mess with it, but she will eat the little pieces of plastic scraps.
hahaha! sounds like a great kitten! Funnily enough, my friend told me that he never thought he'd see the day when I cut down a workbench to act as an outfeed for a tablesaw, and yet, that was the work surface for the 3D printer, so I guess all the presumptions about my hand tool woodworking snobbery have gone flying out the window this week ;)
This guy is why my Anet A8 is on its way
LOVE the cat watching the printing! So sweet!
Great video! Joel is awesome and who does not like Playmobil toys!
He sure is!
The fact that he was ready to answer about weed wacker filament and had the melting point 😂
Hahahaha well ever since I first saw the filament reels I couldn’t stop thinking about using weed whacker refills as filament!
@@AnneofAllTrades Be careful. While you can use weed whacker wire as a filament (with some adjustments), the plastic is not pure nylon, it has some gross additives what may release bad fumes since it's not a plastic made for melting on a 3d printer. Also it will not be a food contact safe print. :)
OMG! This is incredible! Now, the question is: do you buy a tractor or a 3Dprinter? It certainly seems that you could use this endless ways in your shop: cookie cutters, logos on your furniture builds, signs and all sorts of things. Thanks for sharing this; it was an incredible video and I can't wait to see what happens next!
Hahaha definitely a tractor is a higher priority since Joel is my neighbor ;)
I could print my own parts!!! That's pretty cool!!
Computer parts?
I love 3D printers and the possibilities they provide , but as for your truck emblem, I would have thought you would collaborate with April and cast one out of aluminum or even brass as she did her little axes last year.
We might actually print investment molds and try casting them. We'll see.
So if she provides a pic of her kitty cat can that be made into a cookie cutter? I'm asking for research purposes
@joel telling robot with glue gun is exactly how I describe a 3d printer
I love the video I just wanna know what anti-clockwise is. Love the truck!
Been in plastic extrusion for years, there is no ill affects from most plastic off gassing.
The furbabies are the stars of this video 😸😷
They are the best part of every video, and good news, we've got a whole lot more of them now!
Hi Anne, Joel, many thanks for this very informative video. I didn’t realise the infinite possibilities. I will be investing in a printer now and have subscribed. Many thanks Stewart.
Thanks Stewart!
"Alpaca ma bags" best comment of the video.
Glad that got a smile Thomas!
she is super cute!!
That looks great. Love your channel. Did he by chance give you an idea how much a machine like that cost?
That particular machine retails for like 950 assembled, 750 unassembled if I remember correctly.
Anne has it right, it's the Prusa i3 mk3 more info on their site: 3d.pn/Prusa
@@3DPrintingNerd It's amazing that a small country like the Czech Republic has people/small company who produces this machine.
One should expect it comes from a big country, big company in China, Japan, the US or Germany.
Very useful tips! Thanks Anne!
a couple of questions if you have the time sometime. we want to get one for the machine shop and are prepared to spend a couple thousand. will people want stuff made or is the market saturated where it will be virtually impossible to find work to pay for itself instead of just fun?
also being retired programmer with cad cam I can design and save to stl file--is that looked for by 3-d printers? or is that also locked up by the top dogs?
one other odd note: being retired moldmaker I once did a mold for those ties. We used electrodes and I simply took a small dremel and painstakingly ground in the wood pattern--its not impossible those are my same ties from the same mold I did about 40 years ago we molded millions of them--what impressed people? the woodgrain I ground in a few minutes! if we can establish contact I can do basic designs and email them to you as stl file.
Is there any place close to Chicago area making prototype of coffee cup with lid (size 16 oz.has sample of cup but need some changes/adjustments)? Thanks
Love your channel an especially the cats.
Thanks so much!
This video minded me of watching mr Rogers neighborhood
The highest compliment
Cool video Anne! Thank you for sharing it with us.👍😎JP
Which file extension is used for printing and which software is used to create the design?

Is “anti-clockwise” to the left or right?
anti and counter clockwise mean the same thing
Shes funny, i like her wacked out humor. thanks for the vid Anne.
10:22 Kitchen Hood fan I assume she’s talking about. I don’t believe PC fans would be compatible. Limiting factors to account for being Cooking grease, High temps, A/C powered, Bracket design.
Even if the CFM was proper these other factors wouldn’t be worth the conversion.
Pretty cool printer, nice video, Thanks
The Jets then can retract and self clean, and or Sharpen.
Thanx. I have a need 4 a 3D printer. 2 make brakelightlenses 4 a Renault 5 (1980) and u don't get that parts any more..
Great video...hope the cookies were nice!!

What s/w did you use to generate the STL file of the alpaca?
Check out Joel's video ;)
