- This hymn was brought to my attention at the end of last summer and has been an anthem for me ever since. In the midst of the pain and suffering this world seems to be full of, I have experienced over and over again that “in every change he faithful will remain.”

I received the news this morning that a good friend passed on last night from a massive heart attack at just 38 years old. Tonight God brings this beautiful song by Katie to help me understand that God’s will is supreme and so is his love for us. The original title of this hymn is "Stille mein Wille, dein Jesus hilft siegen" written by the German writer Kathrina von Schlegel in 1752. The translation into English was realized by the Scottish writer Jane Laurie Borthwick and took the title of "Be still, my soul, the Lord is on your side ". The hymn is performed to the tune of Jean Sibelius' symphonic poem "Finlandia".
Katie, your performance is very moving. Your voice manages to enter people's souls and the piano accompanies it wonderfully. In these sad moments that the world is going through, you give us this "gem" that I feel as an authentic hymn of hope. As always, a thank you with all my heart. ❤

How lucky are we to receive these nuggets of musical richness, dropped as it were from the ether?! Today I had to pull the plug on a charitable program I helped start up several years ago - an unfortunate side effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. A complete bummer. Then five minutes later I discovered this beautiful song had dropped. All I can say is: Thank You, Katie!

Sacred music often has a great and memorable history behind it. In the late 1600s and early 1700s, Germany was predominantly Lutheran and experiencing a religious movement known as the Pietistic Revival. The Pietists emphasized living a virtuous Christian life, and encouraged their followers to express their devotion by writing hymns.
Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel was part of this movement, and likely came from an aristocratic family. She also may have belonged to an evangelical women’s seminary. Born in 1697, Katharina was a talented published poet and penned at least 20 hymns, including “Be Still, My Soul.” The text was sung to many different tunes, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that it was paired with its current melody.
Johann Julius Christian Sibelius, later known as Jean Sibelius, was a Finnish composer and violinist credited with having helped Finland create a national identity in the early 20th century during its struggle for independence from Russia. In 1899, he wrote a symphonic poem as a covert protest against Russian censorship. While much of the piece is energetic, representing the Finnish people’s national struggle, toward the end the serene melody of “Finlandia” is introduced. “Finlandia” became a national favorite when Sibelius reworked it into a standalone piece. Sibelius composed prolifically, but he also spent time reworking many of his old compositions. In 1927, Katharina’s hymn text was paired with “Finlandia,” and it remains the most well-known musical melody for the hymn today.
I hope all my life might be grateful by the Lord, cause sometimes it's difficult to understand what He want to me and this evening I'm so tired.

Beautifully done. I have been suffering from five bad discs in my lower back for several years, making walking and doing most everything else, painful and impossible. Life is not good, but I am thankful for the blessings of a faithful and caring wife, and in knowing that the Lord is coming for us, maybe sooner than later ... I will be glad to hear the trumpet ...

I appreciated this very much today in all the things happening globally as well as locally. In our hymnal it is the same tune used for hymn sung by Jim Elliot and the other 4 missionaries martyred in Ecuador in the 1950s which is also appropriate today.

This hymn always brings me to tears because it acknowledges our sorrow in the separation of our loved ones yet looks forward to the day when sorrow will be forgotten and replaced by joy in the presence of the Lord. Katie begins with a sigh and ends with a sigh, but then with a nod. What a beautiful rendition of this song, the perfect register, tone, and minor key, then the major key at the end.

This song really ministers to me some days nothing makes sense I've had to struggle to serve God for years but especially the past 7-10yrs we were homeless off and on for a while and we've struggled financially for a long time but when I look back I see how Jesus protected and took care of us when I couldn't see how He would come through!

I don't intend to take the glory from our Lord by any means, but I just felt the need to add that I think this is your strongest vocal that I have heard. The key and your range is wonderful. Today is my late sister's birthday, she's been gone for seven years now, also this month marks one year since my dad passed away 💔. I miss them so, but I'm comforted because I know they're both in Heaven. I'm so thankful to dad and mom for raising us up in the way we should go. I know we'll be together again as a forever family.
