Thanks for inviting me Jonathan it was a lot of fun! And no worries about wanting to sacrifice me. I understand 😅
Thanks for joining me! And we appreciate your sacrifice! 🫡
I love Jack's channel! That was an interesting chat, some great thought-provoking reads. Lathe of Heaven is a definite favourite of mine
Jack’s channel is great! I’m looking forward to The Lathe of Heaven.
Can't wait to read Sirens of Titan now and also Children of Men! Great video, guys!
Thanks! I hope you enjoy as much as we did!
Great video Jonathan! And to Jack as well! Loved it
Thanks Ray! I always enjoy Jack’s recommendations.
Two of my favorite booktubers! Can't wait to dig into this one!
Glad you enjoy Jack’s channel too!
I would include the three body problem series there too. Pretty cool list, every video you post makes my tbr list grow
Yes, The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy melted my mind haha
@@WordsinTime it's amazing how it keeps escalating, you think the first book is mindblowing, you read the second and it's even more, in the third book you see that you don't know anything, it's perfect!!
awesome! love Jack's channel. 😊
Jack is great!
Lathe of Heaven is a fantastic book. Also loved The Children of Men and Parable of the Sower.
I would like to read the Sturgeon book! It sounds interesting.
Nice! I’m looking forward to those two. Hope you enjoy More Than Human!
I've seen the movie 'Children of Men' but never read the book. Just added it to my TBR.
It’s quite different, but I think worth a read!
When reading Lathe I had to check when it was written a few times due to the themes presented - 1971.
See Dispossessed for LeGuin's ideas on anarchy.
For me, her ideas are much more engaging than her stories.
It will be interesting to read more of her work!
Congrats on 10k!
Thanks so much! 🤜 🤛
The first book I read by Vonnegut was Galapagos. After that gem, I was hooked. The Sirens of Titan is my favorite. When the Library of America offered his novels. as a set (at a big discount) I just HAD to buy them. I'll never be sorry. I also really was impressed The Lathe of Heaven, but prefer The Left Hand of Darkness (I cried at the end).
I’m glad you also connected with Vonnegut!
Really interesting books and commentary. I have read 4 of the selections, but a long time ago!
For some more relatively complex and mind-blowing SF, you may like "Lord Of Light" - Zelazny. Or really mind-blowing, but concerningly credible (the early parts of the novel), "A Plague of Demons" - Keith Laumer.
Thanks Joe! I have read Lord of Light and I’ll have to check out A Plague of Demons!
I'm guessing there will be a Vonnegut on this list.. let's see if I'm right!
Haha I won’t spoil it but we are both Vonnegut fans!
😄
The Lathe of Heaven was a great read, really enjoyed it.
Nice! I’m looking forward to it!
Just finishes Dune. New to this book tube malarkey and finding my way around. Best wishes from wet windy darkest Lancashire, England. Hope you are reading something good.
Thanks for joining us! 🏴
If you like Flowers for Algernon, you should try Camp Concentration by Thomas M. Disch, which has a similar plot but with a much higher level of intelligence and a fantastic twist ending. Glad Vonnegut was chosen too!
Having watched all the video now (!) I don't think Vonnegut is saying we're all trapped in our fate, but he's pointing out the smallness of humankind in the great scheme of things. So the introduction of aliens here is to broaden our horizons to encompass the universe, not just to consider our tiny Earth as all there is.
I’ve heard good things about Disch, so I’m looking forward to trying his books!
I just finished Watts' Firefall duo this afternoon. Started Blindsight on Monday, finished Echopraxia on Thursday. My mind is clamouring around out there somewhere and the last thing I want to do is head straight into another book that will "make me think." A bit of Terry Pratchett is probably on the menu before I add something from this video. 😀
Haha take a brain break!
I was expecting "Permutation City." But I guess that book doesn't so much make you think as it blows your mind.
Don’t even know what to think anymore 🤯
@@WordsinTime - I'm amazed you even CAN think anymore
I was expecting permutation city too. Seems impossible to be a WordsinTime video without that mention. 😂
@@Zivilin - Dude, you must be reading my mail 🤣
Overlooked gem and one recommended by Moid and Bookpilled is Master of Paxwax by Phillip Mann 😂
I’ll have to check it out!
@@WordsinTime To be honest, dont. It is a running joke between them two. They were sending copies to each other for a while.
@@civoreb Haha the title had me suspicious
I've never read it
read the vonnegut and the p d james which I loved and saw a tv movie based on the lathe of heaven recall it being very dark anyway didn't know about bookjack before but now have a new sci-fi booktuber to replace one who's sadly left the scene⚛😀
Glad you liked those two! I think you’ll enjoy Jack’s channel.
Spider Robinson Callahan's Crosstime Saloon (short stories collections are better than full lengths books)
I’ll have to look him up!
Loooove Flowers for Algernon
Yes! It’s so good! 🐁
Is that a mild New Zealand accent? I'm trying to figure out the accent.
Haha close! I lived 6 years in England, then 18 years in Australia, then 10 years in the US. It’s a bit mixed but mostly Australian.
@WordsinTime I'm Australian, and I didn't get the accent. I did wonder if it was mixed.

Sorry to be late to the party (again). The thought struck me that all of these books, great choices by the way, were written in very simple prose. You shouldn't let the style get in the way of the literature of ideas.
The lack of modern books of this standard is a symptom of the modern publishing malaise. Someone should write a story about it.
Interesting observation! I think modern readers enjoy character driven stories, but there are still ideas driven books out there.
*Daemon* & *Freedom* by Daniel Suarez
I own Daemon. I’m looking forward to it!
@@WordsinTime
Get Freedom before you finish Daemon. Freedom is not really a sequel. It is the second half of a single story.
The Lathe of Heaven and More Than Human are both great choices for thought provoking SF. 👍
But, my god, stay away from Artemis!!! 😂
And truth it’s been 5-6 years since I read it and I guess I remember a couple of interesting moments from the book, but overall it was a huge disappointment for me.
Haha almost everyone dislikes Artemis, which is surprising because his other two books are so good!
@@WordsinTime Yes, I love both Project and Martian, but Artemis lacks the heart that makes the other two books so pleasurable. And I think it was the high expectations I had going into the read that ultimately made it disappointing. If it was just a book written by an author I haven't read, I would have likely thought, "It was fine".
no blindsight?
Blindsight is fantastic, I’ve talked about it in several videos.
I meant to mention it when talking about Parable of the Sower. Similar idea about the liability of empathy
I did not like the ending of Children of Men. Too much of a rainbow after the storm kinda thing. I think it would have been more fitting if the endings were swapped, if you can understand my meaning without giving away spoilers.
Yeah, I could see that working.
