- The debate was hosted by Oxford University Forum on 6th May 2019. The topic debated was "Does Islam explain reality better than Atheism?" and the arguments made were powerful, passionate and intense. Al-hamdulillah, the truth of Islam was demonstrated to be not only the best explanation of reality but the only explanation of reality that makes sense with what we can observe. On the other side, the Atheist's denial of God meant that they couldn't provide an ultimate explanation of reality without falling into self-contradictions.
The speakers were me (S.A.L.A.M Initiative), Abdullah al Andalusi (Muslim Debate Initiative) debating against Atheist speakers, Alex O’Connor, an international speaker and popular CZcamsr “Cosmic Skeptic”, and writer for the New Humanist Journal, and Psychiatrist, Dr Colin Brewer.

The believer should be strong and confident when debating atheists. However, be careful from being so proud because pride can kill your faith and make you loose debates.
Mohammed, as a muslim I agree with you. But you should realize that your passion sometimes can put people off from the (true) points you are raising. You should keep in mind that your ability to convince is affected by whether people find you sympathetic or not. People tend to believe people they find sympathetic. When you put up a performance like this, it in part negates your convincability. Al andalusi did a better job in this regard.

I can say that the ideology of Islam will have to be of interest to atheists now as the strongest debaters and claims are coming from Islam due to the rise of Muslims in the west alhamduliah, this is one the first times i have actually seen atheists stuck and the theists end as the dominating side, once they will actually delve into Islam it will be interesting how their minds will change.

I am an atheist and still disagree with them about the subject, but Abdullah and Mohammed defend the theist worldview better than anyone. I have to challenge my thoughts harder when listening to them than when listening to any other theist defend theism.
As a Christian, that old man is extremely unprepared and unintelligent. When he asked "Who created God?" I was like.... Seriously?! Even I could have answered that question, lol

Assalaamu aleykum Mohammed, just a constructive criticism: I think you should be less hasty to interject because the conversation is less constructive if you don't let them make their point.

Here are my thoughts, from the left:
1. Dr Colin: Shouldn't be there. He clearly has no grasp of basic philosophy, let alone quite an advanced set like Mr Alex and the rest. His insistence on "Whether we know God commanded" question can't possibly be answered without a discourse, which the session is unequipped for. This is the reason Mr Al-Andalusi seemed evasive; it was a waste of time to entertain his questions for it to branch out into more irrelevant pursuits. I was pretty much letting his voice drawl while doing something else until Alex or Al-Andalusi speaks up.
2. Alex O'Connor: Honestly a likable atheist. His arguments were quite on par since he was up to date with Kalam cosmology though he may not grasp it completely. What I was a tad bit disappointed with was with his pitch of Quran 4:34, it is a red herring and again, requires a discourse of multiple angles. However his assertion on points of morality not being answered deserves another look. Honestly, I'd had to grapple with some of the concepts he brought up, and will continue studying them for better understanding of his arguments.
3. Mr Hijab: Not much to say since he was the crowd puller, and I understood his points pretty ok. As people have pointed out, he has to learn to tether his passion and not interject every time Alex says something. I'd say I'm a bit let down, but otherwise he made his points stand.
4. Mr Al-Andalusi: Impeccable and polite, enough said.
I'd say the crowd winners are Alex and Al-Andalusi. As for the debate, I don't think there's any need to claim winning anything here. Have a great Ramadhan, all!

I'm Moroccan and hearing the old man saying that a taxi driver, that studied in britain, was talking about Judas dying on the cross is a lie.
Taxi drivers in Morocco are poor people, they work for taxi owners. Only a rich person can afford teaching his children outside of Morocco and especially in Britain. Just to say that delusional granpa was using deceptive arguments based on dreams he had instead of real facts. I was hoping to see at least someone close to Alex. In his opening statements this Alex O’Connor guy kept making active claims while saying he doesn’t claim anything. He recognises he has never observed nothing or claim that it can even exist but makes claim it can create something. Then he brings in emotions by asking people to judge a set of moral standards through their subjective set of moral values and apparently that is proof of something.
He is covering his lack of rational proofs by ignorance and emotions.

I didn't actually hear the 2 atheists describe what atheism is about, because they were both more focussed on spouting the usual tirades against Islam, and against our beloved Prophet, by "quoting" from al-Qur'an (out of context, and in English), and rounding it off by "quoting" some unknown Hadith. In any case, atheism is vague and evasive, and they just make things up as they go along.
