I am the same age as Ellis, grew up in SoCal, spent a lot of time in LA. This book is spot on. That’s what it was like in LA in 1980-81.

I like how they pointed out how they pointed out Ellison's prediction of vapidness of social media, but that vapidness was already on display in the 1980's. Social media just caters to America's decadence.

....Disappear Here....I wonder if He’s for Sale....People are afraid to Merge...the story is very thought provoking and a warning against apathy.

I think that's a good reading of the book, a warning against apathy - one of the gateway drugs for nihilism. Really interesting to see how Clay's apathy morphs into something much worse in 'Imperial Bedrooms' if you havent checked it out already - would recommend…

I attended USC in the 1980s when many of the characters in this book were at that school. I knew a few of these types but generally I hung with athletes who came from middle class blue-collar backgrounds. For me, I had to work very hard just to get into USC and truly appreciated getting a great education at a good school. The book's characters do not realize what they have. I actually strengthened my Christian faith at USC by taking a great religion class and knowing other Christians. That is what the book's characters needed.

Glad to hear you avoided being sucked into the void. Funny that we don’t understand the value of what we have unless it's taken away, or it was hard to get in the first place. Probably a blessing to have things be harder in the beginning, lest you end up like Clay and his
"friends". But it sounds like you don’t have to worry about that. Thank you for sharing!

This comment is perhaps more hilariously ironic than the book itself.

You mentioned cancel culture, why would he be cancelled? He is writing about drugs, apathy, vapid people, mental illness & meds (American Psycho), designer brands and social brainwashing. Also, I loved the movie but that was due to the sets and acting.....I agree it did not reflect the book but movies are a different medium it has to have mass appeal.

Yeah it’s to blurry between saying horrible things and actually doing them

@@pedestrianandroid I like that the leave it to interpretation of the reader or viewer. I think the book is less vague.

@@TheAshMcG I mean that BEE writes atrocities in his books, unlike someone like Polanski or Allen.. who are accused of horrible things by minors . BEE is bringing these behavior’s to society attention.

@@TheAshMcG I am agreeing with you. because in the video they say he “got cancelled” which to me sounds like he did something heinous instead of just writing about it

why? it's not a bad thing to aspire to be - lifestyle wise anyway. choosing terrible partners maybe not, being on reality tv maybe not but their houses are pretty nice.

Not necessarily “banned” but it’s author is controversial enough. Plus, this novel is in our top ten and had to cover!
