Hardstyle is my favorite, the bass, the melodies & the overal drive the genre has is just perfect imo
Trance Techno Hands up and Hardstyle are no doubt the best genres
you all probably dont care at all but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Fox Vincenzo Instablaster :)
For sure Progressive House is my favourite, I find the build ups lead to the biggest emotional response
Ok, I didn’t realize that House has now been devided into so many subgengres! I knew a couple, but this amount of genres is mad!
Now my question to you (all of you) is: do you prefer the current state of House music with all of the subgenres or would you rather have it a bit more simplified?
I understand that it’s good to seperate certain styles because they sound totally different, but with a lot of these subgenres the differences aren’t that big.
Having a few simpler genres is also great I think
Thanks for answering my question☺
lol he will mention this comment too
Hey Luke, huge fan of your music and your vlogs, what type of genre would you consider Deadmau5 music? Keep up the awesome work!
haha:D Hardstyle is awesome;-)
eya, if you're into hardstyle you should really check out the latest MickeyG releases, he takes the explosive climaxes to a whole new level of energy
he's fairly underrated tho :(
Fartin Gayrix so you think MackyGee does Hardstyle?
There are so many different genres out now that it would be near impossible to squeeze them all into 1 set while maintaining proper structure. What I like about your sets Luke is that you are constantly changing up your genre selection. This keeps your sets energetic and very unpredictable! Thanks for the vlog!
shout out all my uk ravers, big up the dnb, jungle and bassline massive
ORIGINAL UK SOUND
Hey Laidback Luke, thank you so much for creating these blogs involving everything from DJing and producing to personal fitness. You really are an inspiration to us all and even a catalyst for me wanting to get into vlogging and performing/ production. Thank you for giving back to the community with your knowledge! Keep getting after it man!
Luke, I've been a fan forever. God bless having you in the community. I remember dropping one of your remixes like ten years ago at a small club in Chicago and it lit the floor up. Cheers brother.
Love the video! I like progressive and many other genres of house and dance music in general (such as Drum & Bass, Complextro, Trance, so on), but nowadays I prefer the harder stuff like Hardstyle, (Happy/UK) Hardcore, etc. Glad to see you touch on it. :)
Techno!!!, tech-house, deep house, Chicago house, liquid dnb, garage
I love how knowledgable you are Luke! Thanks for sharing with us!
Luke I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of the type of music you play, but your DJ videos and dance music discussion and analysis is levels beyond anybody else in the scene putting out informative videos or vlogs! Keep up the great work and thanks for giving tips to upcoming DJs like myself. :)
Trance is life
Future house, tchami and Oliver Heldens are my favorite Dj’s I’m also loving deep house too like camelphat and Claude VonStroke
Boo! AZ I am so stoked to see you again! After your set at EDC this year I am floored with excitement
I've been looking for a video like this one for years! Awesome job and always great to follow the tour life as well!
We need techno overview :)
Thanks
Good idea ^^
Maxim :)
Techno was built in Detroit as a protest to soul hose/early house. It was more synthetic, less melodies, very cyclic. Typically 4/4. Germans in the 90s were inpsired by Dutch Gabber, sped it up and made the sounds harsher.
Detroit Techno - The first birth. Jeff Mills. Seth Troxler is a modern Detroit style artist! Likely 120 - 150 bpm.
Minimal - Mostly drum rumbles and repeated phrases, quite dull in my opinion. Can sometimes be melodic. For example, Boris Brejcha
There is Dub Techno - inspired by Jamaican dub/delay reverb effects and the first kind of Dubstep. Often breakbeat, Leftfield are an example.
Deep Techno: Slower tempo (120-123), rolling baselines, and generally laid-back feel. Kind of like Deep House but more synthetic and less sampled. Few vocals. Usually quite repetitive.
Melodic/Ambient techno such as Tale of Us , Solomun (arguably house) typically around 110 - 120 bpm. Very chill, soft drums and synths. Quite house like grooves.
Then mainstream/drumcode techno such as Adam Beyer, Anna, Enrico Sanguilliano etc typically 128 bpm. Includes drum rumbles and sustained synths. Sometimes acid, a short memorable cyclic riff sustained throughout the track.
Acid Techno - Uses TB-303 to make sick acid sounds, this was born from acid house which was huge in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s, can vary between 120 - 160 bpm, very varied. I enjoy Chris Liberator and 999999999. T78 also uses acid lines but is slower paced at typically 128.
Rave Techno - Usually 140 bpm plus, uses more harmonic structures and very inspired by Hard Trance. Julian Muller-Justicary, Dyen - Flashback. Produced to be played at huge warehouse parties.
Industrial Techno - Uses sounds from our man made environment, metal hit foley, harsh drums, often very dark and dystopian feeling. Varies from 130-150. Surgeon, Aphex Twin, Regis. I love Perc & Ansome (can be heavy for the average listener however)
Hardcore Techno (not to be confused with modern day Hardcore which was derived from Gabber not Techno) - Very distorted drums, underground techno is leaning more to these sounds, always 140+. Inspired by early hardcore such as Marc Arcapine, gabber and even modern day Raw Hardstyle kicks. Moth, Orgie, Nico Moreno, [KRTM].
Experimental Techno - typically lnot 4/4, abstract sounds, white noise, may not even include drums, can vary greatly in tempo. Don't know a lot about it tbh. Can be ambient, can be very harsh. Experimenting in itself leaves a lot of creative freedom.
Tekno/Hardtek - In the early days Germans named Hardcore Techno "Tekno" Differs to our modern day Hardcore Techno as it is far less distorted. Hardcore evolved into something completely different as technology improved
Tech House (an amalgamation of house and techno): Most sits further on the Techno side of the fence than the House side. Generally more percussive than Deep Techno. Tempo around 125-128)
There is probably a lot more but that's all I know! Hope this helps anyone.
TECHNO FANS WHERE ARE YOU ?
Fannon Flowers mate
yeh
Squad. (yo these replies are all from like, this week)
@@curtr.5792 I know, crazy right?
here🤚
The two grandfathers of edm - House and Dubstep, The grandmother who keeps them in limit - Drum n Bass
So many genres! Thank you for shedding some light on it Luke!
And The GOPRO6 Is pretty good, and easy to vlog too . Nice one Luke.
I started off on Hard House but after time, I have begun to love all genres. EDMlove
what about drum and bass? :( I challenge you to do a dnb set
I was wondering about the GoPro 6 ! I can't wait to see next weeks video, with the updated settings. Great Video! Thanks Laidback Luke!
I'm hyped for next week's vlog
BLASTERJAXX The definition of Bigroom :D
Almost, they also have electro house and dutch house vibes
the truth is based on the Dutch house, because Thom Jongkind before founding Blasterjaxx is a DJ / Producer of the genre Dutch House
W&W are
@makks lol still salty about the fact that big room was famous in 2012-2015
W&W Blasterjaxx and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike is all the icons!
I found Bass House and Bass House is so amazing!
Dude same!
Same 😂
Hugely unpopular opinion
yeah the first time i heard bass house, was like 2 years ago... Im addicted since.
I'm a Bass House and Hardstyle person
Damn! Your blogs are very good. I am watching them now for a long time and they learn me so much about the scene and the music.
Love the Vids! I started listening to edm because of big room house, but recently seeing Malaa and Tchami in concert made me fall in love with future house, bass house, deep house, and g house!
Hi, Luke! Please do a vlog travelling here in the Philippines, or something that is related to your Filipino side. We love you, Laidback Luke!
czcams.com/video/Ay8SJTHHhvo/video.html
Minimal Techno, German, and Detroit Techno. Been listening to a lot of psytrance.
Awesome vlog! Really informative and good to know how to decipher the various genres. Please make a video on more of the genres and the different technos!
Awesome cuts on these segments. Love from THE PHILIPPINES!
Hi Luke ! Can you make a vlog about how important MONEY is in an aspiring Dj/Producer's career ?
Hi Luke. Can you talk about Trance. Like PsyTrance and that?
Uplifting Trance, Electronic Trance, Hard Trance, Psy-Trance, Vocal Trance, Techno Trance, Tech Trance, Progressive Trance, did I miss any Trance subgenres?
Primary Disguise minimal trance!!!!!
You forgot Melodic Trance
Yesssssss
forgot what?
Such a great video!!! Helped me understand these genres I'm starting to play THANKS LAIDBACK LUKE YOU ARE A CHAMPION
Thanks for this vlog!! It helps me a lot with the understanding and differentiation of Dance genre!!
what do you think about Drum&bass like Noisia, Black sun Empire & Andy C ? and do you think you can play dnb, because it is a very different kind of mixing like you do with house & techno.
Spectriv please no
Gramatik Illegal, from what i heard it's tech house.
My fav genre is trance-uplifting :(
Second favorite for me, Future House is my first
And psytrance
Trance all the way, house sounds has so many wierd drops and HEEE HOOO fans
Loved it that you put in that Metodi Hristov track at the end! Cheers from Bulgaria, Luke!
I''m more of a house or progressive type of guy but have been listening to a lot of techno for the past year.
Excelent vlog! A lot of information... please keep on doing vlogs like this explaining the different tipes of EDM. Thanks so much
Why didn't you talked about Electro house?
Saim Mirza maybe he mixes it with edm/big room :)
But the O.G. electro house is about to make a comeback.
Listen to "The Great Fashionista Swindle (Laidback Luke Remix)".
He said that he will only talk about genres that are relevant in his DJ sets
Plamen2007 no man now the wave is dubstep hybrid trap and hard trap
Saim Mirza that’s my favorite house genre to play Big Room/Electro House/Dutch is solid as well. IMO
Future House & Bass House
DRIGUeZ ayeee
same
Hell yeah!
Excellent video Luke. To me,Progressive House is stuff like Mau5 and Kaskade were doing back in '08 -'09,and Dutch House/Electro is stuff like you were doing with "Move the House-Break the House Down" and Afrojacks-Polkadots. Those were straight bangin' beats back then before everything got too "Sub Genre" Deep House over here in the States is like you and Gina played in Mixlab LA with those Claude Vonstroke/Dirtybird stuff and Tech House is stuff from like Mark Knight and pretty much everything from Toolroom Records. Great video bruddah!
I like the gopro, good quality, can't wait to see next weeks vlog. I have been listening to techno since the early 90's as well and I was totally wrong about the house genre's. I play a lot of big room and festival type stuff. I always thought it was all electro house and fidget. Thank you for all the new terms to add to my library.
Don't forget the next upcoming big genre "Moombahton".
Daniel B., Dillon Francis
Please no xdddd
Endermanso sure lol
Daniel B. Dillon Francis, JSTRJR, Party Favor I guess, ETC! ETC!, Xema, just look up La Clinica Recs on youtube or soundcloud and you'll find a bunch of good moombah
The God Father Munchi!
I listen a lot genres that can be considered Hard Dance. Happy/UK Hardcore, Hardcore/Gabber, Hardstyle, Rawstyle and other subgenres that fall under those styles.
Frenchcore?
frenchcore is for sissies
RezDTB same
The best DJ Vlogger, so much knowlege about music and mixing etc.
Probs to you i can enjoy every vlog of you :)
i found a few new genres this past year so my fav list has expanded a lil bit. always been a DnB fan Trance got me into edm back in the early 90s wit darudes sandstorm.love the energy from hardstyle and that distorted bass is to die for. Recently ive found future bass with sam holo and marshmello and stumbled on to jersey club n love the vocal chops n the JC drum line in hot.
Progressive is by far my favorite genre. Dubstep too, Adventure Club being my favorite in that genre. In progressive Avicii and Zedd are my favorites
how about a vlog on your personal life?
Jason Ryan Brenner, there just has to be People like you huh.😒
czcams.com/video/Ay8SJTHHhvo/video.html
Jason Ryan Brenner I know that buddy, its his real life. He mentions that in every vlog. What I meant was something in-depth like, how he manages his life outside of his DJ career. Yeah he shows us a lot, bit by bit in each vlog. But it would be nice to see a vlog where he shows us where it all began! Cheers 😁
108077854 I need to watch this😁 Thanks man!
Dude its his PERSONAL life. Its personal, its not for you to be there and take a look to his family or how many times he goes to the bathroom each day lmao
Looking forward to the fitness vlog. With all these crazy diets out there, I'm curios to hear about your eating and workout regimens.
I cross genres a lot, but always seem to come back to tech house. There's a lot of variation in it, you can go hard, you can be laid back, and it's funny. I love the samples used in Sacha Robotti's The Dude Abides or Solardo's Today's News. Oh, and digging the mobile vlog, as well as your vlogs in general. Thanks for passing on your experience to all of us!
Def have to disagree on "house music". No way would I call your tracks Paradise or S.A.X. straight up house. House music are producers like Todd Terry, Bob Sinclar, Jude & Frank, Dave Winnel, Alex Kenji, Angelo Ferreri, The Cube Guys, Duke Dumont or Luca Debonaire.
Forgot my favorite subgenre: Tech House!
GoPro 6 looks fine even with the errors.
UrbanLikwid Lol everyone is probably looking up those artists like "this doesn't sound like martin garrix and dvbbs"
House music isn’t what it was. Get over it hipster.
@@MrPrice-bb2gn but people still make classic house styles, low steppa has been killing it forever!
@@MrPrice-bb2gn what are you talking about? there are still plenty of labels out there that keep house alive. none of that "big room" or main stage BS. if someone is "hipster" for liking a more traditional sound then I dont even want to know what you listen to because its probably EDM industry garbage.
happy hardcore!
Ayy, a fellow Happy Hardcore fan spotted!!
RezDTB hello there!!!
Watch this space - hardcore is taking off abroad right now and is the next big thing :D
Happy hardcore is mainly UK form which developed mainly in 94 at raves like Helterskelter with producers like Witchdotka & vibes, Luna C, DJ ham etc happy hardcore was split from jungle rave scene that all came from Rave Hardcore scene in the UK in 1990-1992 , the reason it's called happy hardcore was it had big piano influence as it was happy but with the hardcore feel , it came from the big split in the UK dance scene around 93 , as it was all one sound jungle techno , but the happy house n hardcore crew went down the happy hardcore route, the hardcore jungle crew went down the jungle n dnb route which later formed UK garage scene with a mix of us house
FSwift DJ - largely agree, but by late 96 the word Happy had been dropped by most and it was back to Hardcore again - especially with people like DJ Demo pushing a much-welcomed (IMO) darker riffed, bassline sound to the music. If you remember, the short-lived 4-beat tag was also used, c.1995, but it never caught on. I’m not sure where the UK Hardcore tag that’s used now came from, but it was around the early noughties when that Styles & Breeze Trance derived sound became popular
Hi Luke! Big fan of your music and your vlogs. My selection of genre varies depending what mood I’m in but I’m really digging Deorro right now and that Melbourne bounce. Growing up in a Hispanic background, I love how he incorporates Spanish in his tracks.
Love these old vlogs still super helpful info.
Future House is the KING!
I am also using GoPro for making video, but how to can get the audio so clear? Another mic? The sound is so clear! Please make me top comment so he will answer this :) My favorite is Jungle Terror, a lot of things happen at the same time
Rio Olio I believe he uses a separate mic. In his previous vlogs he talks about the mic he uses. You can see it hanging off his shirt
He also uses ableton to edit the audio for his vlogs
Rio Olio I hope you clean the lense of the camera. It seems clear to me that Luke camera was dirty, lol
Jungle Terror presents a lot of potential for cool melding of aesthetics and ideas... that said, haven't done a lot of jumping in... similar to how LL hasn't looked much into hardstyle... who should I check out?
If you notice, he has an MP3 recorder clipped to his collar in every video. He (like most of us) knows Video isn’t good without good audio. Always record separate.
I always find your vlogs informative! Vlog looks fine with your gopro6. It’s amazing to hear that you maintain 8% body fat without dietary restriction, looking forward to your next vlog!
thanks so much for this video
you explained it so well, loved the examples, and what makes a genre that genre
would you sign a future bass track on your label ? :)
He already has, he makes future bass dude
XOXO?
Progressive House is waaaaaay different than the example tho lol, the example was electro house
dude, that is Progressive House too... Progressive House is not only an emotional melody with cords, what a lot of people think, you can regognize the genere with long builups, less bassy kicks, intense and epic leads and deep cords.that is progressive house a lot of people get it confused with Melodic House , while Deep House or Big Room can also have these emotional melodies.
Thunderbeatz So there is a genre called Melodic House, and everyone is confused of Progressive House?
Currently in love with Tech House which you covered as Deep House since you included Camelphat in there. Truly love the combination of a funky techno swing paired with the energy of a G House or Bass House track. Easy for any crowd to dance to
The song selection Used is amazing.. best examples !!
What do you think about Drum and bass?
DnB is fucking sick mate
Alix perez and that
Nothing delivers energy like drum and bass on the dance floor! NOTHING! Period.
Well, I like both, house and DnB, but i dont like the way its separated and 90 percent of people in the club (nod sure where else, but here in Czech republic) dont like it. But yeah, the energy is maybe so different (nit saying bigger, but different) from house, that its so separated
@@sk8crewba I like D&B but talking energy wise, what about Hardstyle/Hardcore/Frenchcore, Techno?
I don't think that I like the new softish look of go pro
Wow thank you Luke.. I have been looking for this one.. Really looking forward for Techno Genre
Right now I'm really into drum and bass, in all of it's forms. Neuro, liquid, and everything in between. I love the energy, and the flexibility to go super hard with nasty synth sounds, or on the other end, very "progressive" and melodic. It's awesome.
Well i love Hardstyle, happy hardcore and rawstyle
Frenchcore?
Frenchcore is a little hectic for me often, but I love how creative it is!
ImDSG Hardstyle, Raw, Hardcore... Everything is great
they all suck, hardcore runs the world, like can get away with playing reverse bass hardstyle and modern uk hardcore, probably more darren styles stuff
should get denon to send anime some sc5000's czcams.com/video/2m4-eg0CqL8/video.html
czcams.com/video/8FS2nBCR9o8/video.html
Jauz is king of Bass House. Period.
Joyryde bro
Alexander Newman that's the one
Yeah but Autoerotique, JVST SAY YES, and JOYRYDE are the future of Bass House
Dude how can you fuckin forget about Moksi !!
JOYRYDE!
G HOUSE BABY!!!! Although you hardly even touched on the house genre! There are many sub genres of house similar to G house like Brooklyn, Chicago, Detroit house, tech house, and true deep house, (very different from this new deep house) and all these genres are alive and well and spreading like crazy.
Drum & Bass and almost all the genres! Liquid, Dancefloor, Neurofunk, Jump Up, Halftime, Drumstep, Jungle, Minimal, Techstep, the list goes on
Do you know Who is Malaa? 🤔
Jose Trejo tchami? :P
its not Tchami
The "Notorious" guy?
do you have evidence of this ?
I think Malaa is an Alias of Tchami or so
When I was younger I enjoyed big room and other genres like progressive house and deephouse. I started to realize that the “main stream music” such as big room is getting more generic. Upcoming artists required less knowledge and skill to be able to play on such levels, sometimes it even looks like they play from USB sticks. Since a year or so I came across the techno scene. These DJs have a much better experience in the scenes and it is less commercial than big room, it looks like techno artists somehow care less about money. I still respect the old DJs who put effort and dedication into their work (the old tiesto for example and ofcourse luke). But the big room scene would be much better if it wasn’t commercialised that much.
A dutch music fanatic
Nice synopsis! Appreciate how you touched on BPM and covered the subtleties.
My favorite genres are Progressive House and Uplifting Trance. Thanks a lot LL for your amazing vlogs. They are honestly the best out there
Hybrid Trap all the way
Do you use presets and if you do don't you think it's wrong??
Why it should be wrong? Presets are made to use them in your own project in your own way! :D
but everyone can use them and make good music ...quality of music drops....this is why i don' t find any good big room songs these days ...they are all so similar....
He does, and has no problem about it (as it should be) if you look at his tutorials he says it
presets have been around for over 15 years and before that it was sampling. Quality of music dropping has nothing to do with presets. It's because artists are not innovating and trying hard enough to change things up.
In his video where you did a remix for Firebeatz, Luke used a few presets. He recommend that you use them as additional layers, or as a starting point to tweak your own sounds. You have to remember that presets are accessible to everyone. If you're going to stand out, you can't just use stand along presets. But they are great tools for either getting started or adding to something else.
Ever since I found out about Future House it has changed my life! So much love for the genre and I hope it lives on.
Hi Luke,
I am really happy I found your channel as it is really informative for people who want to learn more about DJing and EDM as a whole. I understand that you don't play faster tracks, but I was really hoping to hear your opinion on my favourite genre - Drum&Bass, and the genres around it. I am hoping there will be more of these types of videos for more genres.
Salute!

My man.
All electronic and all awesome in their on way so no favourites for me, each for it's own crowd and purpose. Was good to see this breakdown from you Laidback Luke. Oh yea and gopro was really good, even with the wrong settings you mentioned. My thumb is up for this vlog
Laidback Luke loved this vlog man my favorite genre has to be festival house.
It saddens me that Dubstep & trap never caught on in Manchester...my peoples are missing out on so much
James Noonan ikr Britain just thinks that the best edm music is like that chav type house music wit rap in it
Nah they don't. British love deep house & tech more than anything...with the inclusion of DnB in a lot of areas. That's why anything other than that is considered sub par music...this annoys the fuck outta me haha
Idk how flux Pavilion managed😂
agreed
James Noonan bro Ikr when everyone in the local area playing shit u think is wack nd u just wanna gtfo😂
YEAHH SHOT OUT TO DON DIABLO! :D FUTURE HOUSE :D
He makes Future Bass now tho
Primary Disguise true but I just love future house 🔮 🏡
Thanks for your words laidback luke :) your vlog is amazing🎵
Yeah! Thanks a lot for the explanation!
Techno is the king of all genres
Vince Oh Myyy no doubt!
Only because most people think that everything that belongs to electronic music is called Techno.
Detroit techno baby 😋
ASDRION TM I think techno used to be a term before it became an actual genre for it's early roots.
I am pretty sure that the media fucked up some time ago. Just like they confused Heavy Metal with Death Metal in the Simpsons.
Future Bass, and Trop House. Love some melodies
Thank you for this clear explanation. I believe a very difficult topic to talk about, but you nailed it.
You have the best songs on your vlogs and I am always thankful after I watch your videos 🙌🏽💯 - Claudio (from the USA 🇺🇸)
Looking forward to next! Like to see you knock out the rest of techno and trance if you can.
Rocking with bass house!!!
Awesome vid bro...I came from the 90s as well and your right that it was only a couple of genres..crazy now how it is but right now..I be liking me some Moombahton
You should do a video delving deeper into each genre, explaining their origins, how they evolved etc :D Maybe even a weekly/monthly series diving into 1 specific genre at a time?
Amazing work, Luke. It’s been a pleasure to follow your channel. I
wonder how dope would it be if you could walk us through your genre evolution, since early days until now.
Lots of love from Brasil. l_ _l
I love moombahton lately! It got HUGE through out the last few years. It started as a mix between dutch house and reggaeton and today has a huge variation in style & energy and can work/mix with a lot of other genres too. some tracks have a festival vibe, some are dancehall/reggaeton'ish, some are more electronic, some are more basic. I include moombahton in most of my gigs and it never fails me
Always great stuff!
I've only been DJing about a year and a half now. Started with a lot of big room and EDM type stuff, then got into the trap and dubstep realm. Lately been focusing a lot on hiphop, and kind of bass hall/moombahton/latin sets. And on my podcast Ben Elliott Radio (shameless plug, I know) I basically do open format where I hit a bit of all of these and make them flow.
Love your Blogs, music and sets, Pleace come to Mexico! 💙
