      I did Judo back in the day -- pre 2000's when it was 50/50 standing and ground. I also did wrestling in school -- for fitness and to improve my Judo -- and I tried BJJ after years later. While all sports are removed from self-defense by their rulesets, I've always considered pulling guard to be especially egregious. In the few fights I've had in real life, the last thing I'd do is pull guard. You lose the ability to run, you're asking to be kicked, you have no hope of defending from a third-party, and it isn't clear how to end the fight. Chokes and armlocks are just asking third-parties to jump in, give no time for someone to rethink the situation, and is just asking for them to lie and rejoin the fight if you let them up.
      Modern Judo also has some bad rulesets which affect self-defense -- turtling knowing they'll reset the match within seconds, bans on certain grips, etc.

    Training with a good black belt is always a opportunity to get better.
    By the way, when you said you “just learned to accept” the throws I was glad, because it’s kinda rare for people to pick up that mentality. When two people train they are supposed to protect each other’s body, not resisting out of pure ego. That’s the key to improvement of not only body, but mind as well by taking care of people and cultivating relationships.
    Giving people a hard time to throw you is not wrong at all, but when the throw is set up and there’s nothing you can do about, let it go.

    I'm 53 and my training days are behind me. But back in the mid-90s I trained for roughly 4 years at Gracie Jiujitsu in Torrance. These were my prime years for training being in my 20s and still having my youth. In hindsight, I wish I had trained in Judo instead. There's something about Judo that really catches my attention instead of when I watch a Jiujitsu competition. I feel Judo would have been more tailor made for what I was looking for instead of Jiujitsu. Anyway, that was the past. I still enjoy watching Judo competitions. Anyway, nice job man considering this guy Sean was larger than you.

      It goes exactly the same against a bjj black belt. Danaher himself admits bjj standup is trash. It usually goes - judoka take down the Bjj guy with ease and then gets tapped .
      Let’s not pretend like Bjj guys get good at standup. If anything generally they get worse because pulling guard is a better strategy in a bjj comp and because they tend to be older guys scared to practice takedowns.
      I’ve thrown enough bjj brown and black belts to just have little respect for their standup game. Their groundwork is superb though. They just aren’t very good at getting anyone good to the ground without being takedown themselves

      @DeathxThexKid100 Před 16 dny +4

      The point is the training that you put into a guard, or a top game, means little if you cannot put yourself in the positions you have developed.
      Go back in the clip to where the guy in the black gi finally got to single leg X.
      It was a position he wanted for a long while but never got to it because his opponent just threw him and subbed him shortly after the throw.
      When the black gi finally got to single leg x, he got a toe-hold for a tap.
      Pretty handily might I add.
      He has skill, he is just not developed in throwing his opponent and getting to a dominant position.
      Which if we're being honest, matters quite a lot.
      Can't get to the butterfly guard you spent the last 3-4 years cultivating very easily when your opponent throws you and he's basically in side control/north-south.

      Against someone at that level, it's unlikely he'll be able to get to top, or utilise the guards he's proficient at. You're supporting my point. There's no value in rolling with someone where the skill & experience disparity is so large & they're giving you nothing.
      It's obvious that someone who has been training takedowns for Gi (in this instance) for a couple of years won't stand a chance against a judo guy with +8 years experience. So, there is no value like I said before. Tbf, your point is pointless.
