  • Years in the making, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart's Murdy Family Organ received a Notre Dame welcome on January 20, 2017: hymns, readings, a blessing led by Bishop Daniel Jenky, CSC, and an hour-long inaugural concert performed by Dr. Craig Cramer, professor of organ.

Martha and I are privileged to know the Organ builder Paul and his Sister
Susan. We saw the instrument when it was ready to be shipped.

Millard Battles Been all around the world recording some of the finest pipe organs in the world, i also recorded 2 CDs of Paul's instrument in Saint Joseph Cathedral - what Paul Fritts build in BSH exceeds exponentially the instruments he built in Columbus - which is an excellent pipe organ!! But except for Craig the rest of the organists still play this amazing new instrument like the old Holtkamp . I had much personal experience with the Holtkamp. I hope the BSH organists grow into what this pipe organ can do, and quickly. It is one of the finest pipe organ in America. Joe Vitacco ND 90

pipe-organ I have heard some of the recordings from the other organists playing this organ. It sounds like they don't have much of an understanding of registration or experience playing organs of differing styles. This will probably remain a problem in many places so long as student organists only have access to one or two organs for practicing.

You just have to use your ears and not always read what the stop names are. What are you to do?

pipe-organ Exactly. Take a Cornet V for example. I have not had the luxury (or possibly the curse) or playing an organ with a Cornet V combination stop. When I need one, I have to listen to determine which stops create the best Cornet. Sometimes it is better to trim out some of the middle voices. On other organs, you may need to add more foundations to the Cornet. Same with the principal choruses and reeds. Some organs can sufficiently fill a room with sound with only a small handful of ranks being used in the principal chorus, others require most, if not all the foundation ranks to be used with the principal ranks to fill the room.

What's with the cantor at the beginning? Slow and slower for the first hymn, dreadful. You have a new organ, why not use it?

Hate to break it to you, bit that's the actual traditional tempo.

Probably the best instrument in the country. Too bad they do such dreadful music here.

P.E. Gottrocks That's awfully subjective. A fine instrument by a fine builder but certainly one of many.

And the opinion of the music is awfully subjective as well.
