- uce Banner (Eric Bana) is a research scientist at a Berkeley, California laboratory. His work focuses on using nanomeds and gamma radiation to cure cancer and other diseases. Unfortunately, all of their experiments end in the test animals exploding. He works with Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly); they were recently romantically involved but have broken up because Bruce was too withdrawn emotionally. Although neither of them know it, their fathers worked together on an Army base in New Mexico, in the late 1960s. David Banner (Paul Kersey) was a driven research scientist intent on unlocking the secrets of regeneration of tissue so that humans could regrow lost limbs. Sgt. Ross (Todd Tesen) shut down Brian's experiments when he learned he had been experimenting on himself. David was aware of the risks and already feared that he had passed on some genetic mutation to young Bruce. Bruce was a quiet, troubled child who was comfortable only in the presence of his mother, Edith (Cara Buono). After being fired, David sabotaged his equipment which resulted in an explosion on base. He then went home, fought with Edith and tried to kill young Bruce. Instead he accidentally killed Edith.

This movie has done the most for Hulk as a solo film, it actually dives into his past, his abusive father, his mother's death, him becoming the hulk etc.
Why is it hated by so many people?
His father wasn’t abusive he accidentally passed the dna on to his son and was trying to find a cure the whole time until the general destroyed his work which enraged him to the point of that fight with his wife
Allyson Clark he's abusive in the comics, they don't make him directly abusive in this film but it's the only film that touches on it a bit.

This has always been in my Top 5 for my favorite comic book films. It is really underrated and this is the kinda movie fans would love if shown today

This opening scene was a ginormous part of my childhood, the nostalgia is REAL! I remember watching this as a child in my old home. I'm 18 now and life hits harder than ever.

I feel the same way. I never understood these scenes as a kid, I just loved watching him turn into hulk. Now as an adult I can analyze the story and realize how depressing it was.
Eh. Even as a child i found the scene with Bruce playing with his toys while his parents were screaming extremely terrifying
David Banner was a genetics researcher who, in his quest to improve on humanity, experimented on himself; after his wife Edith Banner gave birth to Bruce, David, seeing that Bruce was not normal, barely showing emotion and gaining patches of green skin when he did, felt that he was responsible, realizing that his experiments on himself had affected Bruce. Trying to find a cure for Bruce's condition, David had his research shut down by Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross; going into a rage over the loss of his work and the hopelessness of Bruce's situation, David accidentally destroyed his laboratory and tried to kill Bruce only to accidentally fatally stab Edith, before being arrested and confined to a mental institution; blocking his memories of David killing Edith, which haunt his nightmares, Bruce was taken into foster care by Ms. Krenzler.
Gerardo Rodriguez in the comics it’s a bit different, while David did experiment on himself, it didn’t affect Bruce as much, it drove him mad. He started to see Bruce as a monster, even when he showed a genius level intellect at a young age. He would abuse his wife and Bruce, eventually killing his wife one night. He was arrested and then Bruce was taken in by his aunt, because of seeing his fathers abuse, Bruce repressed all his rage, being afraid and never getting angry out of fear of turning into his father. Because of this, people saw him as a push over, calling him puny banner. That’s why he became the hulk, when the bomb hit all it did was release what was already bottled up inside Bruce, his inner self. Which was a scared child that could never defend himself, and wanted to feel no pain and to be left alone.
The hulk is strong and invincible so nothing (his father) can ever hurt him.
I feel bad for Bruce. And even though his father was trying to find a cure for Bruce, he's such a psycho. He didn't have to try to kill him.

@@jaredruff9823 He only tried to kill him out of fear of the possibility of him becoming a monster I don't think he actually wanted to kill Bruce but he also didn't want him to become a monster at least before he actually went psycho after all that happened during this moment. However always assumed if he had succeeded in killing Bruce he probably would have committed suicide after that.

1:50 to understand this scene, baby Bruce is creating beautiful memories about his mother, even he's aware of desert flowers fragrance, later on we can see Hulk at the desert remembering this stuff.

Pretty deep dive into Bruce's childhood.

Bruce was basically used as a lab rat by his own father 😭 his story is more tragic than the rest of the mcu’s avengers so far in my opinion..I always felt to sad watching this part
His dad was using himself as a subject and accidentally passed it on and he was trying to find a cure for what he had done the whole time
He tried to cure him after realizing that instead of giving himself the genetic changes, he passed it to Bruce. He thought Bruce would eventually become too dangerous (because if Bruce's personality didn't split he would've because a horrible hateful person as angry as the Devil Hulk at the world, so he was kinda right to worry) so he tried to kill Bruce, accidentally killing Bruce's mother in front of him.

I think we were all scared as children watching the opening scene to hulk. I remember having so much anxiety as a kid because my parents would constantly fight. As a kid I realized that I had these anger issue and found myself relating to hulk. I didn’t want to be a monster like my dad. The ending of this entire intro is what truly fucks me up cause at the time it felt as if I were watching my biggest fear on a screen. I still get so scared till this day watching it

I remember seeing this as an 11 year old in theaters. My dad was not a good man to women when I was in my early childhood, so this scene really hit home hard.

This story was a metaphor of childhood trauma. In the comics Bruce Banner had an abusive father that killed his mother.

I think this was the best Hulk we've gotten and the movie was way ahead of its time.

The Hulk is supposed to represent his inner demon, his anger and seeing Hulk all, Idk, jolly? was kinda weird. The Hulk shouldn't be comedic relief. He should be a force to be reckon with, and a formidable Avenger too.

Quite different in the novelization. In the book, David Banner actually hated Edith, and loathed Bruce. Bruce’s repression of anger was caused by David screaming at him when Edith fainted after seeing a slight transformation into Hulk when he was a child.
In the comics David Banner is actually Brian Banner.

The guy playing the young Thunderbolt Ross was great. Everyone talks about how good Sam Elliot was (and don't get me wrong he is great), but young Ross was good too.

I absolutely hated this movie growing up. Not because it was objectively bad or anything, but because Bruce's abusive household hit too close to home. It took a lot of self evaluation to come back to this movie with acceptance.

@@xBloodXGusherx Yes exactly but in this case it was a new class of Super Soldier far exceeding Captain America the only problem was that it had a side effect that could be fatal to some but certain death to many test subjects, Instead they built a type of steroid serum that only affected periodically instead of permanently, although in Bruce Banner's case he was a result of both which meant it was modified via Natural Genetics from when his father tested on himself ,which meant a whole slew of bad variables such as the fight or flight response or behavioral problems Bruce had as a kid
Therefore, This "Super Soldier Serum" was overall an upgrade from Captain America's but nigh physically, emotionally and mentally impossible to control/weaponize

I’m going to be honest. Every time I see baby Bruce smiling at his mom with that pacifier in his mouth, I instantly start crying.

The CG in quite a few points in the movie actually aged well and still look great. Only one that was a bit goofy was when Talbot pinned Hulk and he tried sticking that needle in his eye....and it just...got *big.*
Honestly this opening makes you emphasise with Bruce in a way no other adaptation of his character on live action. If not for it being rushed. It could of been the ultimate character study of Bruce Banner and Hulk.

@@jaredruff9823 Bruce needed some way to survive those gamma Ray's the super soldier serum that was given to him was not going to be enough because at that level of exposure his body would have been turned to Oblivion so his DNA was altered to the kind of starfish and sea cucumber to create some kind of resistance or self defense and his body actually hardens itself along with a healing factor

This movie was fuckin insane
I like the movie version of Brian Banner more than in the comic. In the comic, Brian also believed he had passed on a mutation to his son but it was delusional and he came off as a jealous manchild who couldn't stand sharing his wife's affections with his son. In the movie, he was a well intentioned man who loved his son but snapped under the pressure and was pushed over into a form of delusional megalomania after being unable to accept his failure at curing his son.
Not a bad analysis of David Banner. I also think David was a well intentioned man, a loving husband and father, but because he let his passion get control of him, instead of him controlling his passion, he brought pain to himself, his family, and God knows how many others along the way.
This movie wasn't afraid to make you feel the PAIN.
Hulk 2003 is a great Hulk film, and demonstrates why Bruce Banner/Hulk is a tragic character.
Love when a real filmmaker like Ang Lee does a movie like this. I loved this one from the get. The music is incredible. Something about the interconnected nature of the modern MCU doesn't really allow movies like this anymore. It's a bit sad.

The first time I watched this movie I was like 7 and I only remember these kind of scenes, where bruce was still a baby.

Easily the best Hulk film and overall my favorite movie in general.
This movie along with spiderman 2 blew me away when I was a kid it proved superhero movies could be both action filled and dramatic

I remember watching this when I was 4, I didn't speak english or understand the event's unfolding in this segment. But there was something about that scene where he sits alone, hearing his parents fight, while he's playing with his toys and they start to bIur in the river of emotions, that I just understood.

@@gerardorodriguez7500 The only reason he needed to work on a cure was that Bruce's father injected himself and subsequently passed on the traits to his son. If he hadn't injected himself (which went against protocol), he wouldn't have been in that mess.

this movie just has a more dramatic feeling. the part of bruce as a baby just touches my soul because i have baby nieces. i feel so bad for bruce, he got a rough start to life.

Its crazy as kid hulk was one of my favorite characters...I remember my parents fighting at the time and my dad brought me to see this movie those abuse scenes were very weird emotionally to me but now as a 23 year old man with 2 kids I can come back around to watch it and feel everything I felt

I remember watching this movie when I was little and the only thing I remembered was Bruce getting put under the table and his mom getting dragged into the room and the screaming. I remembered her getting killed in the bedroom and it all went silent tho, I was too scared to watch that again for years cuz it broke my heart knowing her husband, Bruce’s dad killed Bruce’s mom…man I think I was 4 and it made me wanna cry just thinking of it

I saw this movie back in 2003 in theaters, and as we took my baby brother who was just a couple weeks old. He cried when little baby Bruce was crying, and when he was transforming into the Hulk.
We had a great dealing with that.
Seeing Bruce go through his childhood is just sad.. I felt his pain. My father left my family and divorced my mom (sorta of like David ?) I was angry, confused. Never understood why my father would do that. Just so much pain throughout my childhood dealing with that but I took it like how Bruce barely flinched, felt no pain.
My dad took me to see this at the cinema when I was 7, don't quite get the reasoning.
@@JudgeBane Maybe, it look like a cool superhero movie to take your kids to back then. But it was pretty much a serious movie with pretty good acting and themes. Plus the score was pretty loud in the theater.

I get why David tried to kill his son as he was afraid of what he'd become, and lost his chance to cure him. But why did David set off the base's failsafe? Did he just cause a gamma explosion to spite Ross?

@@shawnhart4195 No he didn’t sexually assault her, he told her he was going to kill Bruce. He went to stab Bruce and she tried to stop him, they both tripped and he accidentally stabbed her.
Is it bad when I saw this movie a billion times and still watch it today I want to cry when Bruce smiles at his mom its just so cute. And when david is activating the failsafe I just recognized that it was the gamma nuke like explosion. The siren is what made it scary but yet better.
