The Draconomicon combined with Fizban's Treasury can help flesh out some of the more complicated aspects of dragons. While some mechanics may not translate well because of its age, the lore and insight of the Draconomicon makes it worth looking into.

I'm running a game in a homebrew setting where dragons used to be plentiful, but for various reasons (trophy hunters targeting nests and babies, interpersonal fighting, a war that almost destroyed everything) their population numbers are low enough that most people think they're extinct. But I make sure to include the impact dragons have had on the world in various ways. In one country there is a crater made by a big fight between two dragons that is now a big tourist spot for travelers. Merchants make a big deal out of a single dragon scale being circulated in their local market. Anyone who wants to seem intimidating as a ruler or a warrior will claim a dragon as their ancestor, even going so far as to forge the documentation. But, as I've stated, common knowledge believes that these majestic monsters are extinct.
So imagine how excited my party got when they had a brief run in with an aloof but non-agressive young bronze dragon during their travels. They treated it like seeing a snow leopard in the wild, and it was such a small moment but as a DM I will cherish the reaction for years to come.

One thing to remember is that when doing a voice, you don't have to do an accent, necessarily. You can make it wheezy. You can make it deep. You can make it high. You can use monosyllabic words, or you can try for big words like Moira Rose in Schitt's Creek, or you can speak like you're actually an erudite professor. I think people see the voice work of Matt Mercer and get fixated on having to do a specific accent of English. Some of my player's favorite characters are just my own voice/speech with a little tweak.

I've been let down a lot by a great many portrayals of dragons in D&D that I've played, particularly from the mechanics of them. The community has widely known about dragons' propensity to get out-action-economied by a party that holds their cool, and I think it's a big contributor to the frequent letdowns. I'm an experienced DM and know what dragons are (typically) capable of and it rather throws me off that I enter almost any encounter with a dragon knowing full well that it is the underdog, rather than my party. The onus is on it to outsmart the party somehow or pull a homebrew trick out of its sleeve, unless it's an ancient dragon against a party below level 9.
It's not all salvation and gloom though, I have managed to pull off some dragons myself that captured that feeling of gravitas and force-of-nature.
The first was by way of the dragon proving itself to be a capable leader of its minions, teaching, inspiring and directing them to work effectively for their collective betterment and glorification of their dragon master, and becoming a very tangible, organised threat.
The second was by means of a crystal ball of telepathy, allowing her to scry and communicate telepathically across the entire world at will to spread her influence. You can instil some major fear in the PCs if their foe has agents everywhere, is mighty enough that they need a serious plan to have a shot at them and might be listening in on the very planning sessions intended to defeat her.

I've played Cryovain when I was DMing dragon of Icespire Peak. He was thuggish, and a bruiser. The first encounter the party (at level 1) had almost ended in a tpk, with one breath attack. But once they managed to survive the Young dragon's attack, their second encounter had him attempting to sneak in and take the party (now level 3) by surprise. They managed to fend him off.

  • @Somber_Knight

Sometimes, just seeing others afraid of something is enough to inspire fear in of itself. The king with great influence and wealth who always portrays his confidence in his actions? Suddenly have him get quiet and look away, brushing off the topic. The champion of the guard who bravely lead his soldiers into battle? He's reluctant to take action, saying things like his soldiers aren't ready yet or that if we just wait a while longer maybe the dragon will leave on its own. The merchant who was attacked by the dragon during her trade route and barely survived? She's shivering in a corner and hasn't spoken in days while her husband bard panics that the songs he always sang for her in moments of stress aren't calming her down. Does this dragon give a different expectation than the one that has been annoying the merchants because it cut off all trade routes?
I might also try giving it a various 'proofs' of its power. For example, if the party managed to talk to the merchant i mentioned and convince her to speak, she might only bring up details like how the dragon had a scar over its right eye and seeing that the dragon has fought and defeated others more powerful than her, she knew there was absolutely nothing she could do.Then when the party meets the dragon, describe its horribly scared eye and have the dragon use its frightful presence right then.

  • @Shindenize

This might sound weird to others, but the way I wanted to convey how important Dragons are to my setting, is by completely removing them into my homebrew world. As soon as my players realize that I have no dragons in my setting, all I explain is "Wow... Isn't that weird that there are no dragons in my planet?"
I don't want my dragons to be just categorized the same as other monsters in my setting. The dragons in my setting are beings of immense power and authority, with the same equal footing as my deities (and were in fact, fundamental to a massive war that occurred in my setting thousands of years ago). Their power is so devastating, they literally left a wound on the planet, splitting it into two hemispheres. And the more people weave legends and rumors about them, the more that their legacy is becoming more potent.
So now, I'm excited to have my players come across a dragon egg on a random shrine, literally unlocking the truth of where my dragons went and what are they doing all along.

I love using dragons because they're really easy to build up and are simple to run but just complex enough to offer an intresting challenge.
If pretty much anything other then a green dragon is in an area the players should figure out there's a dragon before they ever meet it.
Dragons twist their environment, hoard local resources, kill off local monsters, eat up large prey, raid towns and disarm the populace.

    Here’s what I did;
“As the purple worm lunges to strike the air turns to a green fog, the ground is suddenly swept in a toxic fog which flows across the ground, the sky shifts colors and the trees seem to twist and grow spikes unnaturally as the plant growth visibly becomes thorny and twists around a collection of trees shift into a cylindrical dark tunnel which opens like the maw of a dragon as a twisting amorphous scaly blur shoots from the forest, a set of vast green wings flap once then there’s nothing but the headless twitching body of a purple worm surrounded on all sides by corrupted plant growth and a green fog…”
And that is how I introduce a dragon.
The rest is toying with the party while their low level and making encounters more skill challenges to escape it as it flies from the trees and most often hunts bigger monsters that challenge its territory in a tumbling brawl where the players have to dodge the two brawling titans and run through the trees dodging falling trees, twisting plants, and difficult terrain.
I let them fight only when they make an attack and draw it’s ire, and in tandem, it’s fire.
This is how you make it scary through roleplay, the rest is using their abilities wisely and making them use trip and push attacks.
I keep my players laying down and I make my dragons use strategies and spells.

This is very good advice that I'm going to keep in mind for when my players come to face with the bbeg wizard who can turn into a dragon because they absorbed the dragons essence when he killed him and part of that fight he's going to turn into the dragon. So it's going to be very good to run and they've already seen the results of the dragon who killed many soldiers and took down the knights of the kingdom along with the king and prince.

I honestly think all that a dragon needs to do is to really prove their power. I'm always reminded of Fatalis in Monster Hunter World, the dragon that actually feels like a world-ending threat with the sheer scale of its attacks and who, mid-fight, burns the entire arena with a single breath, forcing you to desperately hide behind a giant door made out of a powerful metal, only for this impenetrable door to slowly melt as you have to scramble behind its remains and pray that the dragon runs outta breath before your cover is gone.
    It's TERRIFYING.

I've just ran Lost Mine of Phandelver and I actually faced the opposite of this concern: I had to make the dragon not strong and aggressive enough to flame grill the whole party (they faced that encounter on level 3 with not that many magic items). In the end, it still attacked and the party did not to fully engage after that initial attack almost nuked the cleric.
Now I am playing like it sees the party as an investment (they offered Cragmaw Castle to it, to let them loose for now) and looking for an opportunity to strap them of more valuables (pre-emptive counterbalance in case they get too much good stuff).
What do y'all think? Did you have the same issue? Thanks.

I realize this video is a year old but if you haven’t done a video on doing a dragon voice I would certainly appreciate it. I don’t watch real play (It annoys me but I love playing the game and will be DMing soon). I just can’t picture what a dragon should sound like. The wrong voice seems a worse choice than keeping a dragon silent. But if it’s silent it’s almost like any other monster.

Dragons usually just use breath and normal strikes. Have your dragon make use of strategy. Swipe at the entire party with your tail, breathe fire on the squishy casters and so on, attack from the skies, run away when near death. Have PC's make perception checks at the dragon flying over their heads, ready to take it's sweet vengence.

Voice overs are... a skill to employ, not a requirement. If you have the skill to do so, and the social strength to do it infront of people you may not know, do it. Apart from that, you *will* need to know how to at least emphasize, sublty or blatant, the intention behind how they say the things they say.
Its not often I see the likes of commoners is a bland statement that can apply to many dragons in their cavern. It can be implied to be insult to the dragon to see such lesser beings. OR it can be a very happy bronze dragon who hasen't seen a humanoid party in a few hundred years.

One of my biggest complaints about Dragons in the core game of D&D and Pathfinder is that every Dragon feels very - samey. Red Dragons will always be hyper aggressive beings that demand subjugation, Black Dragons will always be murderous and absolute evil creatures, etc. It's like the game completely ignores that Dragons are individuals for the sake of giving them a sort of racial base line of how a Dragon should act of a specific species. This may work for other mortal races because mortals are ignorant to everything in the world, they don't completely understand certain things due to in part of their short life span and outlook on life. Dragons should not be this way, Dragons can live for thousands of years and because they are magical creatures, they are more in tune with ideas and concepts that escape mortal expectations.
To me, every Dragon should be its own being with its own goals that can't simply be melted down to eating, sleeping and hoarding. Dragons should be able to have objectives that they see as important and complete those objectives - for example, one of the Ancient Dragons in my current campaign is an Ancient Blue Dragoness who, rather than tricking travelers with illusions to take their stuff or eat them, instead is highly artistic and wants to learn and share her own artistic endeavors. Sure, she is still a Dragon and will except no criticism of her work without a threat but, she isn't just out to kill, eat and hoard.
In regards to Dragon voices, I feel like this is a very important thing for a Dragon to have and I think there are many ways to convey what a Dragon is through a voice. My tables are almost always strictly online so, I have the advantage of using voice mods to give these Dragons specific voices however, this can be done without the use of a voice mod, just differently. Dragons are creatures who are intrinsically tied to their element and that element should be conveyed through their speech. Red Dragons should have this deep and gurgled voice as if they are speaking through magma, White Dragons should have a cold and sharp edge to their voice as if every word is being said through shattered ice. Voices can aid the importance of a Dragon's domineer on the board and aid in making them seem like a true threat.
