I as a DM have put an indominable spirit in my games as a nemesis for the party. Shes always two levels above the partys highest level person. She has little tweaks like +2 dmg if shes attacking her nemesis. Otherwise shes just a really strong berserker x battlemaster mix that I minmaxed myself. I often put her as an enemy in situations where they cannot destroy the body. And "resurrect" her when they inevidably run away. It came to the point where she just flat out silenced partys wizard and made him scared shitless of her due to me just DASHING towards him every fight. Just to mess with the strongest dmg dealer.

I almost exclusively do homebrew or fan made games. A lot of my favorite stuff about the classic DND world have either been pacified, watered down, or smoothed with this kind of political stuff. I play with anyone and everyone of all types of backgrounds. I don’t think people should be praising hasbro for “queer baiting.” It’s not from a genuine place.

i was a hyper intelligent dragon scholar, aeons old, legit font of knowledge, but i was the most quiet and respectable of the group, scholar yes, heavy introverted shut-in? also yes. but pretty sure the only time i insulted somebody in the game was when one of the party members asked my age. for reference, Female dragon. had to roleplay the audacity lmao, it was good fun.

The way that i play a morally grey character is simply to make him useful to the party... For example, party really needs money and we just happen to be in a non inportant city full of loot... Nobody will notice, a few family safes broken into, and a few pockets missing some items Besides the party will thank me 😂😂😂

Grey morality is what I'm forced to be whenever I play a game with my usual boyscout with a group of: -ofc evil mf -isn't even role-playing, he's playing pokemon or a wargame -another character coerced to be grey -"I simply don't care"

It comes down to more than just combat, like you said even in roleplay spellcasters have more options, but outside of role play there's exploration, and problem solving, and generally speaking Marshalls don't really have a problem solve outside of Hit it until it dies Another issue is, early game and even a little bit into mid game if your Marshals are really optimizing themselves this isn't really too bad of an issue, the problem comes at late game which most people don't play anyways which is why it's not that big of an issue overall in the community and a lot of people don't see the issue, but as someone who consistently plays levels 15 to 20, and has run multiple games from 1 to 20 It's a major issue A lot of the times most characters in the games that I'm running survive occasionally someone dies on the way but that's just the game, every single time I'm running a game at about level 15 if there's a Marshall in the party when they go to level up they usually give me something along the lines of " hey, I have felt really useless outside of combat lately and it's just not fun, I feel like I've not changed in the last 10 levels and I want to know if I can switch characters to something else. And honestly, for most Marshals that's the complete truth, after level 5 you really don't change, rogues generally last a little bit longer than most of the other Marshals, But even then at about level 17 the rogues are dropping out too And it makes sense, if the entire game I've been hitting and sure I'm hitting better, but that's all I'm ever doing, and my party member goes from like blasting a fireball to some group which is like okay whatever, to getting us into the ethereal plane or teleporting us or these big grandio spells that virtually solve problems by themselves I'm spending two out of every three problems that we have doing nothing because what's hitting it going to do when we need some other solution to some big magical problem cuz if you're over level 12 you don't run into mundane problems you run into big magical problems And a lot of people say that it's the DM that needs to give the Marshals something to do, but that usually runs into one of two problems 1) It's way too obvious and it feels like you're babying them which nobody likes 2) whatever problem that I'm giving the Marshals the spellcasters usually just end up solving for the Marshals, like Marshalls like combat so maybe I make a scenario where it's a combat scenario and the spellcaster has to do something throughout the combat so the Marshalls get to do the combat and the spellcasters get to do the other thing except, in no realistic scenario where they're actually infinite enemies that can show up and the spellcasters usually just blast away all the enemies for the Marshals Another really egregious thing at higher levels is that as the DM unless you want to accidentally kill them you can't Target Marshals that much, I can Target the fuck out of my spellcasters they're going to be fine I know I'm not going to kill them I couldn't if I tried, but Marshalls? They've got like 23 AC maybe, all my shit has like a plus 17 to hit, and it all has a plus 17 hit means if it doesn't have a plus 17 to hit I literally can't hit the spellcasters

Concept: the chosen one is a whimp and a weakling, but they WANT to fulfill their destiny, because it's the right thing to do. So they look for people who are actually capable and happend to align with their goal (they may not even tell them about the chosen one thing). As a player character this would mpst likely translate to being full support, barely any offense.

I had a similar experience with my first DnD campaign the party talked shit about my cleric because he played dumb to fit in with the party and was made the butt of every joke but when his intelligence was actually being used they ignored him and threatened him so I had him go on a rant about how they treated him that we needed to take a moment

This hits… interestingly… after watching Sam’s recent update. Especially cuz he plays up the not knowing about the other player characters and not having a lot of pop culture knowledge in common with them, but we can tell those are bits, I think.

The thing that strikes me about Arthur Morgan throughout RDR2 is that he is always honest about who he is. Dutch operates under a self righteous delusion that his theft and murder are for the greater good but Arthur knows it doesn't matter why you do these things the fact you them is bad in and of itself. I think it's because of this honesty that he has a chance to actually be a good person and help people towards the end of his life.

14th-level Zelot Barbarians embody this trope the best. Ignores unconsciousness upon hitting 0hp and even if they fail all 3 death saves they still don't die unless their rage ends so no matter what happens, they will survive at least 10 rounds, doesn't matter if you deal 1 DMG or infinite dmg to them, they are too angry and determined to die.

I'll have to say this. "Their main job to prevent the casters from getting hit" That's not the problem. That's actually part of the problem. Martials are meat shields for the spellcasters and they have nothing that makes the combat versatile for them. Here is an encounter. You are forcing to have a martial to get sentinel to protect their casters. That's it. I bonk, and they stop. Let me roleplay this: "My fighter decides to pull out their sword and charge in, by attacking their shield to make them lose balance as I knock them against the wall so they hit their head. " DM: Just roll a normal attack. "Ah, 18" DM: "It hits, roll for damage" "Well, 6 damage" DM: "That's your turn? "That's my turn" Martials have two big issues: 1 boring combat. Spells can be versatile and unique while martials only have one thing that is the same from 1st level to 20th level, "I bonk" while Spellcasters can change reality. A Martial, has no progressions for their martial abiltieis UNLESS they invest in feats and spellcasters only need levels. That\s the problem, that's the big problem. You want to stop a dragon's breath attack with your shield? Feat. You want to do special things with your maul? Feat. None of these options should be behind a feat. They should be behind level progression just like spellcasters.

I’ve had a villain that’s appeared for my players a few times now. Little do they know, although I’ve dropped hints, each time they have fought him he puts them in a collective dream rather than fighting them directly, where I make him as strong as I want and rather than make him fight them, I make them fight each other over the course of the battle. In reality he’s far weaker, but whenever they get to battle him for real rather than a dream they’re going to think he has every trick in the book still, when in reality he’s lost most of his power. It’s great

In my Saturday game, I'm playing the opposite of this trope, but it has a lot of the same stuff. I'm playing a warforged in a world where warforged don't exist. Quite literally the first of my kind. I don't play him as something to be marveled at. I play him as something that has to navigate a world where he is literally the only one of him that exists. He attracts way more attention than any other character, just by simply existing.

Morally gray characters tend to just be good characters that are willing to do evil actions when necessary. If a law is preventing them from doing something theyll brwak that law, stuff like that.

From my point of view, you can not simply be evil; evil is a verb. Evil is harm inflicted with intent & awareness that the target can suffer as you would in their position. If your combat encounters typically end with you killing your opponents, & your character is aware that said opponent is a sentient being that knows pain, fear & the concept of death, yours is a morally grey character.

The Basic Roleplaying System is enough for me [GURPS is just more complex than I want or need], but their settings books are universally excellent, always full of great information and ideas, even if you don’t actually run GURPS, the support materials are top drawer quality. But if you and your players want endless choices [and I mean endless] GUROPS may well be the last game you ever need to buy.

There are other questions that lifespan brings forth to me. I am not a DnD person, my experience of it is BG3, and WH40K. But any race that lives that long, how is it that they have NOT overpopulated the rest of the races out of existence. Think about it, we humans live about 70 years. On average we have 3 or 4 children. By the time that the first couple is 40 their children are having children. By the time that they die they have a wider family of 16-20. And humans can increase that rate quite a lot. So why are these fantasy worlds NOT overrun by thousand upon thousands of Elves, or whatever your long lived race is. Now you can start to introduce forced reasons why they cannot reproduce as fast, but that becomes several stories in itself. If reproduction is so rare to them then it would become an incredibly important part of their lives. And it would make that race incredibly fragile, evolutionary wise. Fast breeding races can adapt to environmental changes, to losses through sickness or war. These are all topics that, to the best of my knowledge, are never covered in DnD stories, and yet they are in many ways fundamental to the way a race would behave.

One of my parties has three very different alignments: Good cleric, morally grey fighter, and evil bard. Yet, they work together really well, BECAUSE they have the same goal. And the cleric helps keep us other two in check when we get homicidal (not murder-hoboing, just willing to sacrifice others for our own goals, while the cleric will refuse to leave anyone behind). Not that the bard doesn't consider herself evil, she's just a power-hungry crime boss, plus a spy slowly undermining the city. In my eyes, that does make her evil. The truly grey character is the fighter. His personal motif is unclear, we just know it's something to do with his family, but he is employed by the bard, and doesn't care that this makes him a criminal.

I don't understand how people think that marisha is a bad role-player honestly. I personally am not a fan of her characters for one reason or another, but she plays them all very well.

Your section on the power gamer reminded me of my, and a couple friend's, favourite way to make characters for one DM in particular. We make a fun, interesting character. But almost always have layers of power gamed bullshit that we basically never pull out. The DM has a habit of both making things harder/worse the stronger a character or party is, and throwing insane challenges once in a while regardless. At this point its basically an assumed agreement that we will play at a fun and reasonable power level, and that if/when he decides to pull out something bullshit then we are also going to "go all out". This is of course something that has been built up over 10+ years being friends and playing together, but I have used similar tactics in games with new players or dms. Make a character capable of handling almost anything in the game, but play them to the proficiency/power of the party and campaign. Gives you room to adjust without retraining/rerolling.

I watched this video on my TV, then opened my phone to bring up the same video to make this comment. at first I thought your title was shitty Clickbait, but it turns out it’s just a horrible take. People do this all the time, they point to an incredible performance and desperately try to find a way to prove it was the actor breaking the bounds of their character. It’s weirdly parasocial and it diminishes the impact of the moment and the performance.

So while I don't do DnD, I did a stats roll for characters when I started my current fanfic and I differentiated Wisdom and Intelligence as Street Smarts and Book Smarts. This is allows for Practical Knowledge (how to interact with people, how to throw a punch, how to hotwire a car) and for more academic Knowledge (how to read, how to make medicine, how to figure out how tall a building is by the shadow...) and allows everyone to have a moment of "that's a brilliant idea"
