- Not everybody has all of the power tools to knock out a ding repair...and that's okay! In this installment of Fiberglass Hawaii's "Ding Repair Chronicles" we show you how to repair a pretty bad ding using only hand tools. This no frills video will show you how to get your board watertight and ready for action. All of the materials in this video can be found at www.fiberglasshawaii.com.

This is the best "how to" video for surfboard ding repair that I have watched. Thank you for breaking it down into easy steps. This is what's great about CZcams---I hope you sell lots of product! You deserve it.
Very impressed. This video is the best tutorial I have seen in a long time. I live on a sailboat so I'm very familiar with regular poly v and epoxy jobs. But adding the hollow bubbles to the mix is genius. Epoxy mix ups are so badass
Looking to buy my first board so don't want to spent too much on new, so this has given me the confidence to find a bargain and repair...
Best tutorial repair that i have seen. I watched quite a few of them and they helped me to repair my old surfboard. However, you have the skill to edit the video nicely and educate well. Im going stick to this video to repair my board, really inspired me start today. Well done mate!
Agreed, good camera work, clear instructions, and good pace.
SAFETY FIRST! Take off rings and other jewelry unless your made of money, wear a dust mask at least when sanding, use something other than a shirt to wipe resin that might have fiberglass in it, as already mentioned DO the gloves when working w resins, DEFINITELY wear a VAPOR mask when working w resins, try to work in shade if at all possible (UV light changes the chemical reactions in the resin compounds, resulting in weaker coats and coats that can discolor), maybe put the Q-cell in before adding the hardener for longer working times if it's your first time(it'll harden anyhow if you mix enough), make sure to mask off a wider area to avoid having to sand areas you would't need to other wise, be sure to sand LIGHTLY on the initial hot coat w rough grit pass, increase sanding pressure as getting closer and with water, but not excessive ...buff if you want to come out super clean and slick, but not needed.
safety might not be a concern for those doing this once for a "quick fix" but if you do this often, at least on most weekends for example, invest in the safety gear...someone else mentioned what the resins can do to your skin, let alone your nerves, lungs, brain cells and eyes! if working inside to get shade then best get a fan going to move vapors away from your face.
The manufacturer of these products should use better quality control when it comes to "how to" safety videos...just saying.
But yeah, overall, nice explanation to get it done the "correct" way! [like he said, LOTS of ways to get same results, preference]
Eric Fredricey STFU
Thanks man, that's good advice ;)
What is the "hot coat"
@@joshuwa7279 It's a final coat, resin only which is used to fill up the last details
meres gr its resin mixed with wax you kook
This is really helpful. I have an old board that was shaped back in '73 with a few dings I wanna fix up. Overall in great condition, but it needs work. Thank you so much. Great video!
What kind of board?
@@Rogue_wave Fox surfboards
@@jmhernandez6503 Oh cool, havent heard of them
Excellent video man! Helped me a lot with my ding repair! Giving my repair guy a break and trying to teach myself haha
Thanks Mate, great tutorial, appreciate the effort you’ve gone to to produce this. Cheers
Use protection! Gloves while mixing resin, you will get it on your hands. Gloves, mask, goggles long sleeves when sanding glass: if you get glass in your skin it will form red irritated spots, breathing it is super dangerous, I don't want to think about it getting in your eyes.
Awesome tutorial! Thanks dude!
Awesome video! fixed 3 different dings with your technique, Aloha.
nice job Grant.
Thank you so much for this vid. I now have a better understanding of the process because of your good explanation skills, I am so grateful for your help here, you make it seem so simple. I have a 1979 Mark Richards 6'4" single fin that I recently rescued from an abandoned camper, and want to repair the numerous dings on the rails. It looks well used and abused for sure, but the dings are small and just a result of ignorant mishandelingI wonder if you would want to produce a video on restoring this nice board, i'll send pics. Thx, by the way, i'm in Colorado. I was a surfer in the 60's, but moved to Aspen to become an expert skiier in 1970. Can you do it or even want to? I'm easygoing and not selfish, maybe it wouild be a great advertising tool for you to promote your skills. I dunno, just askin!
I realize I am quite off topic but does anyone know of a good site to watch newly released movies online ?
@Matthias Tyson thank you, I went there and it seems to work :D I appreciate it !
@Gus Colt happy to help xD
nice tutorial vid! thanks
I have a slingshot built with bamboo so repair will be more obvious on bottom-side rail
Is there a way I can put a clear repair layer so the bamboo still shows or just do the wrap around top-side-bottom with fiberglass?
Thank for this video! For minor dings can you simply put another hot coat layer on top of the crack? How do I know if I need to laminate a layer of fiberglass cloth?
Great video, I've started my process of repair following all these advises. I've got a question: how do you clean up the glass where you make the mix? it's such a mess.. :( acetone?
Many thanks in advance!
thanks you. i saw video. I will try to repair my surf board my self.
Love that tip about sanding from different angles, thanks.
CLAMS CASINO! beat comes in @ 4:44 love the vid, totally helped, thanks! Does this process apply for super minor cracks? My board hit a rock, it cracked the very top layer, no dent though, but I think water could get in. I'm thinking all I need is the epoxy sealer, not the q_cell stuff.
Epoxy is easy to work with and has very low VOC's too, I recommend it for the home repairman.
Please help! do I use one layer of fiberglass on the top of my board? its a pretty large ding. Thank you for the help.
Hello, great video thanks! I have two questions... first, qcell is not available where I am... do you think it’s ok just to use resin to fill in or make it myself (grind foam?) or some substitute? 2. Is it ok to use epoxy to repair a poly board? Cheers!
Do I have to use glass after the q-cell? I’ve got a paddle board with a bunch of little dings and scratches. I’d need to glass the entire board if that’s the case.
Can you use laminating resin to fill the ding in, then use a hot coat of sanding resin to make it stronger
I used 2 layers of cloth. I can still feel the cloth through the sanding coat from yesterday. Should I put on another coat or continue sanding even if it goes through the top layer of cloth?
I have a nose ding where the fiberglass layer is coming and could be pulled off. Do I need to cut this off before applying my qcell-resin and hardener mixture?
what is a good product kinda like solarrez that i can use to fix my surfboard? right where my back fin is under it got pulled out so the whole circle slot came out with the fin how can I fill in the spot where the the fin is held in by the slot so the circle thing stays in? sorry if I am confusing
very, very good, really great, I would like if you could put Spanish subtitles, as I understood it perfectly, but I have only one question, what is the% used of polyester resin, catalyst and microballoons? thanks
dude dude you are good
and epic video!
thanks
I have a ding/hole in my surfboard about the size of an egg. How much of the Aluzine Epoxy (along with the Q-cel) do you think is necessary to purchase to fill this hole? I am also thinking about doing a few other hotcoats and glass patches around my board. Thanks!
Thanks!
Thank you for the video. I purchased the Ding All repair kit found at most surf shops in California. The kit includes most of the items in your video minus the hot coat. My question is: is the hot coat required after blending the cloth by sanding?
I think the hot coat is the resin that comes with it, it’s the last layer On to of the fiber glass
Every ding repair kit has resin, that is what you use to hot coat. It is the same resin you would use to laminate the fiberglass and mix with q cell
Would this be an appropriate repair and materials for a torq surf board with a crack on the top from rail to rail?
what about the difference between the sanded area and the old part of the board. do you see a difference?
I forgot to add hardener when using the cloth, does this matter or will it just take longer?
I need to do minor repairs on a brushed finish carbon SUP. They seem mostly cosmetic, as they don't appear to be cracked down to the foam. should I use carbon cloth rather or fiberglass cloth? also, I'd like to mix white pigment to match the finish. When does the color go on?
Why did you put resin and cloth up on all that area to the middle of the board if the ding was on the rail?
Hey Anthony, I've got a ding that is about a quarter inch from the stringer. Is there any issue with doing a repair close to the stringer? How close can you go safely? Can you glass over the stringer? Many thanks!
Hey their, also how long did it take for your Q-CEL mixture to cure until you could sand it? Mine has been sitting for 6hours and getting hard but has a slightest squish if force is applied,, Im guessing a day for it to cure?
What is the qcell ratio or just add until pastey? Also can you add the hardener after you mix qcell and resin?
What's the name of the instrumental you used when putting on the resin. Dope beat
what is the sanding block used in this video? I'm looking at the "Hyde Tools 45395 Heavy Duty Rubber Sanding Block" on Amazon
Are you ever worried about sanding to much around the area of repair cutting into the unaffected area? does that cause an additional weak point ?? Great video
Try not to... You should only sand minimally - like 1/2" around the ding so you don't mar up the nice finish around ding. Won't weaken board cos you're not sanding a layer off, also, the cloth b resin is adding strength to the repair. Don't go crazy sanding. Take your time n go thru the grits. 120, 150, (220& 320 wet). Done
on my board, ive got a ding on the lower rail that kinda caves in on itself, it only about 10cm long and only about 75mm-1cm deep at the most. Would you recommend using the same procedure?
Vinyl ester epoxy gloss on top of epoxy? Is that chill or is it gonna catch on fire ?
this is a great repair video! thanks
Can the materials be found at home depot or lowes?
Does this work for polyester boards as well
How would you go about adding some more volume can u just use this resin on the whole board?
Gino thats not very realistic you’d probably have to sand the entire glass off then coat it n qcell sand then re glass lol
Is the wetsand 320 grit just the sand paper and water?
+ Fiberglass HawaiiHey I was wondering how you clean out the mixing cups as well as the brushes? Also when you say hot coat is it just the A+B without the Q cell? Thanks been awhile since I've worked on my own boards
TRIKushbeachside acetone
TRIKushbeachside no q cell on hot coat. It's porous so it technically might not be water tight. The hot coat is a straight 2:1 mixture of resin that will be water tight and be free of cloth or any other stuff like q cell
@Visceral thin and quick, so its fast (aka hot)
@fiberglasshawaiiTV What ratios of resin, hardener and q-cell did you use to get it so fluffy? How long did you whip it up for and did you whip it indoors or outdoors?
I have tried a few batches now but cant seem to make it as fluffy as yours for a rail repair.
Mix up your resin and hardener (ratios are included with product packaging for any reputable product), and stir in the q cell a little at a time until you get the consistency you want.
how much q cell are you putting in?
man... you should be proud
sitting here with a quiver full of boards with holes :/ you make it look so easy
@Avi Harlem shut the fuck up you arent tricking anyone
Thank you! only too professional for me
Do you use the same resin in all the layers (incl hot coat) ?
Initial resin = laminating resin. Hot coat = sanding resin (laminating resing with wax solution added)
What are the measurements of the repair mixture
Thanks for the video, really helps! But on 9:40 what is wet sand? Is it just Water + Sand paper?
Yes. However, make sure your sandpaper is ok to use with water
@@mango_46 dang what a throwback lol, thanks for the reply though! Haven’t touched a surfboard in years 😞
The repair looks great but there is no mention of personal safety when working with epoxy. Wear gloves and keep it off your skin. Wear a dust mask when sanding. Uncured epoxy is a sensitizer and can cause a skin rash or worse. like bee stings - some people are more sensitive than others.
When do I take the masking (edging) tape off? Before the area cures or after it cures? I was thinking if it is after it cures, wouldn't the tape be glued down as well?
Marcus Dee you cut the masking tape from your lamination at half cure, so it's hardened enough to work with and not move things around, but not fully set as you would have tape glassed into your board haha
Yea If u leave it sometimes the adhesive mixes with the glass and gets funny
Does anyone know if I can use the 2:1 epoxy resin to repair a polyester fiberglass surfboard?
Jerome Ramirez yep, but don't use poliester on an epoxy board
it depends on the resin you use. some are 1:1, 2:1, 3:1 or 5:1. It should say it on the packaging. Wear gloves and a mask all thew time. Epoxy resin is really toxic.
how do you clean the resin off that paint brush?
acetone? or throw it away and get a new one
One thing needed mention was how to get the wax off the board before patching the area, skip that and the repair will not stick
You need to grind all of the glass out of the buckle and the crack. Well you don't have to but Q-cell bonds much better to foam.
Does this mean taking a knife and peeling out the old glass would be best?
matt kawamura in short yes. But I would use a grinder instead of a knife.
hey, what do you use to clean the brush for the hot coat?
cheers
good laugh thanks for that one
O.M.G!
Is the hotcoat just resin or resin and harderner?
I have the same question? Please let us know!!!
Does this work for both epoxy and fiberglass boards?
+chlela01 You can epoxy over poly no problem - it's a physical bond (thus the rough sand paper). In fact, many boats put a layer of epoxy over the poly hull to prevent water penetration (osmosis). You cannot poly over epoxy very well, though.
I have three G-shock watches. I've always wanted to get a hammerhead tattoo
Cool Video thanks man 🤙🏻 but whats up with the audio? Have an awesome day
Whats the song is 4:50 by the way?
A$AP Rock - BASS
I really recommend using a gram scale to measure out your epoxy resin and always mix at least 1oz. The weight ratios are 100:40 it says so on the bottle. Trust me I learned the hard way! Epoxy resin is temperamental and you only have a 2% margin of error with the ratios. Or thats what someone told me. Don't trust your eye!
y didn't u make your laps round instead of strait lines with strait lines it give it a breaking point and when u sand your sander round so wouldn't u want your lap to be round
Hey Grant, its me Dragomir. You live in Hawaii now?
What resin are you using
color matching the white would have been nice ;)
Sorry for the question, but what does the hot coat means? Is it just a resin, or resin with hardener ? Know nothing about it. Thanks
Same question I had
Resin with the normal amount of hardener.
+fiberglasshawaiiTV Im a 15 Year Old Surfer, but my dings aren't as bas as yours BUT i have a faint white line across the nose piece. If i continue to surf with it, will the nose snap off?
Quantum Editing im 14 and i have the same problem in my surboard but its in the middle, so idk sort of scared
+Emerald Overlord I had the same thing and I took it to a dumpy beachbreak, nose dug in sand, fractured board to point where it almost fell off, then later that day it did. but I had that line for a long time, and multiple dings in same general vicinity, so just be careful with yours. BTW I'm 14
surflukify k i will, thx
It broke, Thanks for the feedback though guys, I now have a Lost board :)
Is this repair for polyurethane boards???
is Q cell and Cab-o-Sil in the UK is it the same stuff? fluffy white thickening powder which makes the resin or gel coat non drip and a light filler?
No cab o sill is different from q-cell. If you go the the supply store and they say they don't have q-cell, ask for glass microspheres. That's the other name for q-cell. Cab-o-sill is more of a thickening agent ( it also blends clear), and micropsheres/q-cell is a filler.
K Hodges thankyou so much! dam Ive had to write all this down in my surfboard construction diary. also when I approach my fibreglass store here in the UK I bet the bird working there is also in the dark about this stuff?. I hope I can locate Q cell here in the UK and practice with them both . I have used cab osil one repairing a snapped board together again and it did help. Qcell sounds great cheers KH appreciate the info. I'm one of those board shapers that lives miles from waves and doesn't own a car. so I make boards and never ride them. Hopefully I may buy a 2nd hand pick up truck one day cheers.
Brian Trend yeah no problem man. Yeah some employees at the supply shops are in the dark. I've had to educate them in my area a couple times. And yes for a snapped board q-cell works really well because the end product is lighter than using cab-o-sil. One thing you don't see in this video as well is how well you can sand q-cell. If you catch it at the right time, just before it cures completely q-cell flakes off like cheese. The q-cell will feel hard, but tacky to the touch and it will be hot as it's still curing, then take a flat sure form and shave it down. Just play with it and you will find the perfect time. But yeah man. If your building boards it's time to get yourself a car and get near the beach. Haha.
K Hodges I live in Torquay in the English channel south Devon so no waves here maybe 3 waves a year in storm swells. North Devon is a wgole better story some really good waves up there. I retired from construction in London after a heart attack and coma and I'm a retired pensioner now ha ha. I took up my old hobby board shaping after a 15 year lay off and started again from scratch. Getting into it fast have a quiver of 8 boards now and its addictive! Time to sell a couple for more materials. Its cold and rainy here in winter, so not a good time to glass here. 2nd hand cars are pretty cheap in the UK but its the long term ownership and maintenance and parking here thing that is such a rip off in this country especially the insurance racket. So as a pensioner I have to watch my pennies ha ha. I bought a used mini Malibu 7'6" for my dog Charlie and now hes standing and really into it, hes a sprollie , a border collie /springer spaniel cross and a real sharp cookie he just barks and gets everything he wants little spoilt shit. Im shaping a copy of Losts latest fish that red and blue railed one with the wide channel out the tail. I did a red and yellow swirl glass job on the bottom then on the top deck I successfully used those grain rubber tools you resemble wood grain art work. put mahogany on the sides and an artistic version of pine woods in strips in the middle. those rubber grain tools work really well , as you pull them you rock them at the same time and the wood grain looks amazing. check out the guy on utube who does woodgrain with acrylics and floor varnish to seal the colours then covers it with 2k varnish sealer to seal it on the water ski. his finish is stunning. Sick o wood now and will soon be working on a Lost style 6'4" rocket /driver probably do the bottom in sea green and clear top deck. I was brought up on longboards in the 60s and then in the early 80s a MR twin blew me away and its great to see Lost are doing some of MRs designs their way and they look amazing. that Biolis is a great shaper. cheers K, brian and Charlie surf dog Ps, check out Europa the final battle on Utube. utube banned number one, which is very important, but you can find it if you look down the comments they guide you in . the videos are 1 to 10 and are very informative of where we are heading by far the best videos on utube.
K Hodges you can get the rubber grain tools on ebay for a few dollars/££ just make sure you clean them afterwards to retain the image cleanly. They work so well and easy to get used to . You can make your foam board look like a full on balsa wood board

I know who you
NEVER USE Q CELL,NEVER,use micro balloons
Scary how you teach people to work with these harmful materials without any kind of personal protection.
Don’t use the shirt to take away the glass! It’s really dangerous to breath in, don’t get it on your clothes.
