I love the fact that he accepted Keanu Reeves to voice Shadow because not only is he familiar in his line of work, but he also knows him personally to be the kind of person who can pull it of in ways that most people can’t; even though Jason got the role for replacing David Humphrey back in the day and became just as iconic as his predecessor. Furthermore, he’s aware that any negative output towards this direction would tarnish his reputation and career as a whole. As a veteran, he’s hypothetically passing the torch to Reeves like he did with Roger Craig Smith. No matter the outcome, Jason Griffith has and always will be my Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehog. 🦔💙❤🖤

People who love Jason Griffith as shadow is the equivalent of people who love Rodger Craig Smith as Sonic, they both made the role so iconic, that its hard to not hear them as sonic and shadow when they talk.

1:20 - 1:35 Jason pretty much cites the exact reasons why I thought he would very likely say no even if he had been asked to voice Shadow Sonic 3.
He has said in the past that as gutted as he was when he was sacked as Sonic (& obvs Shadow) 15 years ago, he rather thinks it was a good thing now in that these characters need a fresh change of scene/voice every now and then so they can evolve and have flexibility and continuity etc.
Sure, Jason’s take on Shadow is my favourite to date and will always have a special meaning in my cultural life & childhood memories, but I do think he’s right - I was worried that had he voiced Shadow in Sonic 3 then it would have shown a certain sense of idleness and getting too attached to fan favourite versions of these characters and stuff (although even then, unfortunately, it’s not like Jason’s Shadow voice would still sound now as it did 15-20 years ago when he was still voicing Shadow in the games and cartoons, which I suppose would have been a lot of people’s motive for wanting him back in the role for the movies).
And in the meantime I suppose I should say that I too am excited to see and hear a fresh take on our favourite red-striped anti-heroic hedgehog in this new scenario for him on the big screen and in live action, especially when it’s an actor as great as Keanu 😎🖤❤️
My thoughts exactly, I adore Jason, but I was not in agreement with fans who wanted him for the movie, the movies aren’t the games, I want to see them do their own things with these characters and give other actors the opportunity to give their take on these legacy characters instead of retreading old ground for the sake of pleading nostalgia blinded fans. Jason clearly still loves these characters and that’s great, but he’s been in this business a long time and understands the importance of passing the torch onto other actors letting them be able to experience voicing these characters as he once did.
Very well said! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really expecting him to reprise his role as the black blur. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jason Griffith and I would’ve love it had he reprised his role, but what we know now is 10x better!
I actually thought that Hayden Christensen would’ve been Shadow with the rumors that came out, lol. I honestly think he would’ve nailed it had he voiced Shadow. Either way, I’m super happy that Keanu is voicing the ultimate lifeform!

I love how even now, Jason is THE Sonic voice to most fans. He's Sonic and forever will be, his impact is no joke. Sonic, Shadow and Jet always end up sounding like Jason's interpretation in my mind.

The best sonic VA. I grew up with Jason so his era of sonic is Prime Sonic too me, I remember hearing sonics voice for the first time and it being so snarky and cool, he made sonic cool.

Believe it or not I actually met Jason Griffith at a meet and greet (nicest guy ever btw) and I asked him about how he feels about shadow being in Sonic 3 and this is what he said.
What seeing Jason on TMZ is wild, of course we all really wish they could have gotten Jason for the role but still they made a choice and still a decent pick. Jason being a homie and encouraging Keanu to play the part genuine and without worry by being himself is awesome.
