WTF are you talking about? That's not what he meant. He said, "... she had *star* potential," which is not the same as saying she had potential as a singer. Being a star has to do with other things alongside vocals. And he said that because even though she wasn't yet at that time accustomed to singing live as a main performer, she showed already stage presence.

Don't get me wrong I love Mariah Carey's voice but they pick the right one Patti LaBelle to sing that song with him.
It's not that they picked Patti over Mariah, its just that Mariah didn't have time to record the duet.
