  • In this video I continue to tear down my N54 to find out exactly what happened.
This will be part two of my timing chain, oil pan gasket and rod bearing DIY.
This video shows you what is involved with doing an oil pan gasket on an E90 or E92 BMW.
I drop the subframe and take a look at the chains and guides that failed.
In the next video we will pull the oil pump out and look at the rod bearings.
Here is the thorough video I made on removing the subframe:

Finally. The missing piece to dropping the oil pan is shown. Removal of the power steering pump. I'm doing my turbo swap out and decided to change my OPG while I'm there. Didn't want to tackle the PS pump and serpentine belt without seeing it done first. I couldn't find one oil pan removal video on youtube which actually shows it as part of the oil OPG removal. Not one.
Was such a shame that your previous oil pan gasket replacement video was a guide rather than a how to do it, long after you had changed yours. I know that out of everyone, you would have covered it off. Anyway it's there now :).
    Thanks VDIY.

My N54 135i Engine was a goner. My oil filter had golden metal shavings and chunks. After disassembling my engine found the Crankshaft rod bearing on piston 4 was heavily scratched up. I was able to rebuild my engine which I had to put a new crankshaft (expensive) plus finding the correct crankshaft bearings wasn’t fun. My rebuilt engine still running great currently put 12k miles.

It was cheaper for me to get a low mileage junkyard engine than to buy new bearing shells and a crankshaft. This had me watching with bated breath So glad the oil looks not horrible and the filter likely caught the little bits...
I assume you're going to replace the oil pump too as a precaution after pumping some particles through the filter. Still fingers crossed the bearings are totes ok and it'll be running in no time.
Very much makes me certain in the 150k - 200k range depending on excited high rpm driving, to replace all these guides at a minimum, chains maybe if it's not to costly. I wonder if the oil pump is good for 200k on avg.
or at 200k, an external dry sump system to replace the oem pump maybe..
Great vid, and details. I look forward to seeing more of the crank/rods/bearings/pump underside to see how it looks there.

Do you think the cause of the damage was due to hpfp overdrive set up. It is possible that the overdrive kit put stress on the chain and guides and wore those parts out. You shut the motor down when you received the warning so the bottom end should be fine. Worst case you will have to polish the crank and put a new set of bearings and oil pump and chain etc. Keep up the excellent content.

Yeah I wouldn't worry too much unless you're going for over 500 WHP. From what I can tell the oil doesn't have any fine metal shavings in it. The filter seems to have done a good job of stopping all the shavings from the sprocket on the crankshaft that drives the oil pump. I'm thinkin a good confirmation will be when I pull the vanos solenoids and the filters on the side of the block. If they are still fine then nothing made it's way into the rest of the engine. I'm going to put some cheap oil in and just run the car for a few minutes and drain and change the filter. To give the motor a good flush.

At 200k miles the rod bearings may show some sign of wear, but the chances of them getting totally destroyed and produce that much of observable material are very slim. It usually takes much more that a few seconds of low oil pressure under no load to get to the point of them being "destroyed".

So I had them done at a local shop, the next day, Did a little pull, my crank hub bolt backed out.
I don't have to explain to you what happens then.
Is there a possibility that everything may not be damaged internally and just the timing is off, I'm not sure if I understand that concept.

Chain operated oil pump??? wow the Achilles heel of the N54. Any way to supplement that? External oil pump? Probably an impact should zap the pulley off next time. Take out the plugs and blow the engine out with air and give it a compression test, if it holds up, the rings are prob ok, See if the rods are loose, if so then bearings may be bad, can you turn the motor and not hear squeaks? If not then the Main bearings are not worn to metal. Use the castrol oil, its supposed to be the best.

I am using the helix x3 and it leaks oil between the pump and the unit which I rather have it that way until I take the helix off for good. Why do I say this ? It is because oil passes thru the unit and if it doesn't have any place to go eventually that oil will lose its property and will start to cease up the helix unit..... I would not be surprised if that stress caused the chain to brake you car
