Another potential health concern to note when sleeping in VR is that a headset attached to your face (especially an Index) will make you produce sweat and soak into/get on the faceplate. About the subjects the video missed...Desktop users! Sleeping in VRc isn't a VR-only experience. In fact, a lot of sleepers call it a night when their trackers run out of battery, then just switch to desktop mode. No risk of tangled cord, no more fancy fullbody and dancing, just chill and talk before sleep. Usually in front of a mirror, a movie or watching a livestream together.
You can totally sleep while your computer is running, listening to your friends just like some listen to ASMR.
As for the subject of sleeping alone, that was a nice perspective. "Bedroom under the ocean, with sound of sealife and their shadow over you while they swim outside" is one of my favourite ambiance. Looking at the night sky or any fantastical variation (aurora borealis, perpetual shooting stars, multiple moons and space birds, etc) are a close second.
Personally, I don't sleep alone with VRc on, unless I find a cozy spot while exploring random worlds. A mystical cave, a Nanachi village, someone's garage whith a NPC playing guitar? Yeah, I fell asleep in such places...Only to be joined by friends wondering what the freak I was doing lost in there, then for them to stay and sleep as well or invite me to their worlds. xD
Now, social sleeping isn't just about wanting to have sleepovers with friends.
Some people have litteral phobia of sleeping in complete silence, while others search for people to hear their story so they can unwind from whatever weight them down. There is a very profound sense of loneliness (if not plain isolation) that hurt people on a daily basis. Sometimes, just answering "sure, you can sleep beside me" and lending an ear really help people, even if you're just here to relax and not actually to sleep yourself.
We are lucky to have technology, even if it was just a "desktop only" game.
People can join eachothers and work on their social anxiety or fight such phobias you were previously forced to endure alone. Sleeping in VR, or rather in VRc no matter your game mode...If it works for you, it is still better than chronic nightmares, right? Can't really say it cures insomnia, considering the number of people who forget what time it is till almost morning but eh; Some relaxed sleep is better than no sleep or panic attacks!
Most of the time I head to dedicated sleep worlds using my "little maid" avatar.
Managing the pillows people throw out of bounds (or on other's face to troll them with a surprize "blackout"), putting a nice "piano and rain mix" on the media player and shuting down any troll video, lending an ear to who seems to need it; That what's I used to do on a daily basis at one point. Now less, because either friends invite me and because I'm not that often on VRc to begin with, but I still like to randomly go take care of sleep spaces.
If you're curious about sleeping in VRc, even as a desktop user, do that. Become a little helper, engage conversation in a respectful manner with people who look like they're just there to chill, and you'll learn a lot from public worlds. Just be aware that like in any public instances, scary things happens. In fact, sleepers are easy targets, when you think of it.
The problem of trolls playing super loud noises, putting questionable content on the media players or straight up playing animations that can cause epilepsy is a huge problem. And since everyone's sleeping, there's usually not enough active players to vote/kick.
If you ever sleep in public instances:
-Turn brightness down to minimise the impact of malicious animations
-Turn the sound down (or off) when you feel yourself drifting into dream land
    -Whatever happens, don't panic!
And at first try to ignore the trolls if you notice them. (but discretly kick them if the vote is on)
If nobody seems annoyed they'll get bored and are more likely to jump to another instance than if anyone took the bait.
Now if you excuse me, it's already past 1am. I have some sheeps to cound and some Zs to catch. ;)

My personal experience with VRChat sleeping. I never really slept in VR as it was never comfortable for me. However, for whatever reasons being in VRChat makes me sleepy or drowsy. I feel it's a combination of things as it's visual and audio therapy to calm one's mind. The addition of being around friends does help. There are also theories that most VR headsets when worn applies pressure on pressure points around that head that induces sleepiness.

I joined a world, explored a little, then crashed on a couch. Some random kid came up to me and asked if he could chill with me, and of course I said sure. So, we sat on the couch and drifted off, talking about things we like and listening to the people in the background :]

This idea of sleeping in vr kept nagging and nagging at me, my initial thoughts were ok this is a bit extreme. Now, I can say without a doubt I was wrong, sleeping in VR is damn peaceful. Found a world with a campfire and a tent with a beautiful night sky, and the experience was great. The only thing I think I'll change for my setup is using the orginal cloth straps my quest 2 came with.

You can even try to do it as a desktop, which helps since there are no wires and no heavy equipment strapped to you, meaning you can move more freely, whilst still seeing everyone else. Most times due to timezones there can be many hours between one group of friends going offline and another group of international friends coming online and during this time I sleep. Being able to sleep sat up with a raised foot rest helps and I've found a way of linking wriststraps that always keeps the controllers active.
That's when I find a cozy pillow filled corner of a Friends+ room with pleasing visuals and gentle ambient audio and nod off into a meditational sleep.
My sleep cycle has pretty much adjusted to twice a day. I still get my 7-8 hours but in split shifts. However, if I play through my designated VR sleep period, the "jet-lag" the following day is terrible.
For comfort I recommend the rubber headband as used on the Quest 1 and sleep in a low brightness area so the screen doesn't get so hot.
Waking up in VR is a unique experience I recommend everyone tries at least once.

Well, it’s proven to be bad for the eyesight of kids and teens. Your eyeballs and the muscles attached to them are still growing when you’re young. Your eyes adjust to the distance they need to look at. So if you look at monitors or even books for too long, too often, your muscles will make the short-sighted part of your muscles better and the long-sighted muscles weaker. it's so much easier to sleep with a quest 2. no wires, no speakers behind your ears and the headstrap is just an elastic band.
you probably can't wake up to a virtual world with that battery life though.

I wonder if the link cable could handle laying on it and if it would be comfortable. Then at least there would be no worry about runtime.

@@MXarcx I have a knock off and it works just fine for sleeping but sadly it only makes the quest last 4 hours, compared to the 2 it gets without, I wonder if an official cable would make it last longer?

At first I thought this was weird. But then I remembered there were a few nights in my highschool years where I fell asleep on a discord call with my girlfriend. We both stayed on call all night when this happened. Although weird I remember it being comforting at the time. Still don't plan on sleeping in vr on purpose tho.

The first time I slept in VR I had a lot of trouble falling asleep, but after the first time it became pretty easy. I still have a CV1 as well though which is remarkably light, so it made it easier and more comfortable to sleep with that headset.

One of my friends has slept in VR every night for the past 3 years. They got 26k hours now
Also I use LuxVR to dim the screen and shift to warm colors late at night if I’m not in a VRFPS game. Works great 👍

I don't sleep in VR because it definitely takes time to get used to (I've tried) and I need to be focused at work.
Though, when coming back from work, I rest or nap in randoms Rest & Sleep world and play music or a video.
There are times when there are some very annoying, shouting people, and if they really seem to understand that people are sleeping and that's the reason why they're shouting, i block them. I don't need anyone like that near me.
I also basically have to sleep in public worlds for social sleeping cause well, I don't have a lot of friends in VR and even less friends that sleep in VR, wish I had that.
Those random strangers that come and head pat and are up for cuddles is also very nice~

I'm getting used to sleep in VRChat recently and I gotta say, it helps a lot. I suffer insomnia (it's 6 am rn) and when I try to sleep on VRChat it's almost instant. I love to cuddle next to a friend as I don't feel lonely aswell. Idk how but you can't really feel the VR headset on your head past a certain point, and the sensation of waking up in a different world is... amazing.
    I love to do it.

I've been sleeping in VRChat pretty much every night for about half a year now. My recommendation is not to sleep in public worlds unless you really want to and if you do sleep in a public world then turn down the voice and avatar sound volume really low because there will always be trolls shouting into their mics or playing obnoxiously loud music from their avatars around you just to ruin your sleep.
Also, if the world has a music player then make sure it has an option so only the owner of the instance can play videos else others might decide to play death metal music videos or other videos with audio that is intended to be rape your ears.

gonna word vomit here about my sleeping in VR experiences. sleeping in VR is for sure unhealthy af and not worth forcing. big bulky heated brightscreen on your head is not comfortable. it is true, my first experiences sleeping in VR have been accidents where the chemistry between me and friends has been so good that none of us wanted to sleep. Since then, the majority of the time I ended up sleeping in VR was when I got really high or really drunk or both. many times I'd wake up in some cool starry world or dark room not knowing how I got there but truly bewildered at the thought of waking up in another dimension. my friends set up a "designated driver" thing where when they hung out with me in vrchat, if its time for bed but they can't get me to take off my headset, they'd drag me into a sleeping world and leave me there where I'd eventually fall asleep. if I'm not on dnd nor in a private world, sometimes a friend would hop in, wake me up, then we'd continue adventuring in vrchat as if I've never left. although the act of VR sleeping with friends or VR cuddling with girlfriends is a novel experience, I would not agree to sleep in VR while sober. just fall asleep on discord call instead :)

I used to fall asleep with my Oculus Go in a fishing sim that had strangely realistic environments so that I could sleep on a deck and stare at the sea while it rained. Was so peaceful.
I have since stopped as I like being able to see.
It took me a month after I stopped to stop reaching to take the headset off my face when I woke up, it was the most disorienting feeling XD

I'm excited to try this in my half-dive headset when it eventually comes. I've always lived that feeling of sleeping surrounded by friends, so it could be really nice when I'm home alone.

this is what it is to be a VR user. this transcends the medium at this point. you are going from just using vr a lot to really living in it, and just going into the world because you have some ties to it. this is like a glimpse into what the internet would be like if google and facebook never got into power, and everything was still decentralized.

I know you probably won't read this Phia, but, this was a really informative and interesting video! (Also, the super Mario galaxy music brought back amazing memories and almost made me cry) I tried VR sleeping last night and while I didn't make it through the whole night, I had school in the morning, it was a very cool experience, and one I want to try again and want to do it more. I also wanna sleep with friends. This video might have been a turning point for me in sleeping in VR, and actually being on a good schedule and being more productive. Today already, I feel way more productive and want to get things done, it's a really nice feeling. Thanks again, I'm excited to see where this takes me ^^
