- Julie Covington recorded this song in a 1976 concept album. Released as a single, it topped the UK singles chart becoming at the time the biggest selling UK hit by a female vocalist with sales of 980,000 units. She turned down the offer to play Eva Peron in this musical play, Evita. It went on to be performed by Elaine Paige. Among numerous artists who have covered the song including The Carpenters, Olivia Newton-John, Sinead O'Connor, Sarah Brightman, The Glee Cast... and of course, Madonna.

Never had heard of Julie Covington before, and certainly never knew she was the FIRST to sing the role of Evita! I always thought first was Elaine Paige, and then Patti Lupone. This is amazing to hear! Totally different voice from the other two, but AT LEAST just as good!!! THANK YOU!!!
She was in a series about a female rock group in the UK called “Rock Follies”.

I heard the 1st airing of Julie singing this and was enchanted imediately. Oddly the programme presenter didn't know what to make of it.

Many people say that this is the best version of Argentina but sadly I can’t agree, Julie seems very flat, there is very little passion in her voice, it sounds like she is bored singing the song, I am very underwhelmed.
