BIGGEST Tarpon Ever Caught!!

  • Most fishermen dream of catching a world record-sized fish, especially a world record tarpon! In this episode of BlacktipH, we travel to Bahia Solano, Colombia, to fish the sardine migration along the coast of the Baudó Mountains. Shortly after Josh released his first-ever roosterfish, he hooks the biggest tarpon that we had ever seen! This fish was massive! Josh, Alberto Meija, and Dr. Robert Borrego battled this behemoth for nearly two hours before the fish gave up. After quickly taking a photo of the monster fish, we released it back into the ocean. At first, we thought this fish weighed around 250lbs, but after looking at pictures of other record-sized tarpon on Google, we started to believe that our fish was a world record! I called Billy Delph from Delph Fishing and Raymond Douglas from King Sailfish Mounts to validate our catch. Both men agreed that this fish must have weighed over 300lbs and thus breaking the world record! The estimated weight using the Bonefish Tarpon Trust Tarpon Weight Calculator was 312lbs.

      Fish like Tarpon actually regenerate their protective glycoprotein slime coat extremely quickly and it is usually not a matter of life or death when the slime is partially removed. The slime coat only acts as a protective layer against parasites and bacterial infections so they don't actually need it at all times to survive. This fish looked to be handled relatively well without any substantial injuries and was released quickly so there's a very small chance this fish died.

And just last thursday the orthopedic surgeon told her she is good to finally stop coming in. Her bone is finally healed and the redness in her skingraft is finally gone. 2 years with a broken leg. Shes a trooper. But we love going fishing. But we will never have a fish that big. Glad your accident wasnt as bad as ours. And so exciting to watch such a monster get reeled in.

      The guy kept a Warsaw Grouper that was like 400 lbs. What are you gonna do with that much fish? Donate it to a food shelter? Why would he care about killing a tarpon. Just another fish he caught on a guided trip.

    • @DiabetoDan
      @DiabetoDan Před 3 lety +3

      @@bhaubert different case IMO. He went out with the express intent of catching and eating the warsaw, not so with the tarpon. The warsaw also was pretty much dead at boatside, unlike the tarpon. That is indeed a shitload of meat, but with plenty of friends and good flash freezing you can make the most of it without wasting any. Still don't think it's something I'd do, but I can understand it better.
      With the tarpon, if you've got the intent to release it from the get-go, I think it's way less justifiable to bring it in the boat.

Nice example for an already ignorant generation of anglers. For anyone who doesn’t know, keep your fish wet. Especially one even nearing this size. Be quick with your handling, even more so after a long fight. Get in the water with them and take your time with the release. Or just try fishing for the enjoyment of the sport and not the clout.
