The Benefits of a Closed Mind

  • Nobody likes to be told that they have a closed mind but if we look at the two great archetypal women of human history, Eve and Mary, we see that Eve had an open mind to evil suggestion whilst Mary had a closed mind to evil suggestion. So the real question is how and when to have a closed mind and how and when to have an open one. This video explores the mental and spiritual skills involved in having an open mind an unapologetically having a closed one. In the world we live in today this particular skillset is of particular importance.

Another very helpful video. Thank you Brother Brian. So many insights here. I love the ‘severe’ quote about sincerity. It goes right to the core of what separates us from an authentic relationship with God, ourselves and others.
The image of the clam shells will stay with me too.
I find too much external information undermines prayer. I have to be very careful with my internet use. Sometimes I’m better at it than other times and I definitely notice the difference.
The way is narrow that leads to life.

I identify with what you are saying about internet use. Sometimes I find something 'educational' and 'inspiring' and it still leaves me feeling depleted of spiritual energy. Nothing compares to a good spiritual book and our common enemy has many tricks to prevent us getting to it. God help us!

How do we know that it is the voice of God speaking?
Sometimes, the discernment of the spirits is the key to the spiritual life.

The Unforgivable Sin has caused me so much grief because the Bible clearly says that the Pharisees committed it by attributing Jesus miracles to the Devil and by saying that Jesus had an unclean spirit ( Out loud). But then the Catechism says that the Unforgivable Sin isn't words but rather it's dying with an Unpenitent heart. Then St. Faustina calls the Unforgivable Sin refusing Jesus Divine Mercy...etc. There seems to be so many alternative opinions on what it is....even by Saints and Theologians....that I don't know what to believe.

      @brianbr5388  Před 6 měsíci +1

No! The pharisees did not commit the unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit. They blasphemed against Jesus saying he was doing the work of Satan. Jesus told them that sin, against him, would be forgiven but if they continued on the same track it was only a matter of time before they blasphemed against the Holy Spirt. That is convincing others that the Divine process of salvation (i.e. the work of the Holy Spirit for our salvation) is actually a work of Satan. You have not descended to that level of evil duplicity de-evangeization leading others to eternally reject salvation. If you did it would be over for you. You and I do not currentlly have the skill and intelligence to do this. So, on the one hand, I feel sorry for your anxiety but it is a false anxiety. You need to stop meditating on this nonsense about you being guilty of eternal sin. You are wearing yourself out and others who are politely listening to you and trying to console you. It is a vicious circle. You need to stop asking God for a sign (because he gives no one a sign) and step out of that vicious circle in blind faith and trust. Until you do, you will wear yourself out and everyone else who is listening to you and trying to help you.

@@brianbr5388 ....Thank you Br. Brian....I really needed to hear that and I won't mention it again.... I've decided to stop worrying about punishments and rewards and just serve the Lord as best I can anyway. That way I can have a real relationship with him without expecting something in return.

I also think St Bernard was very wise to advise against placing spirituality and theology in a debate setting.
I’m reading an excellent book called Wounded by Love by St Porphyrios at the moment. He is of the Eastern Orthodox tradition but he says what amounts to the same thing.

Thanks for the comment. You reminded me of my sad neglect of reading the great spiritual writers of the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Also reminding me that I still have that hunger in me to connect with them. Keep up the great reading. I envy you!

Hi, great content with a lot of depth. Thanks. I sometimes find it easier than consciously letting go of some circumstance, to accept the potential suffering it will bring. In doing that that circumstance looses its ground in my mind, just my 2 cents.

That's a great point. I have been thinking recently how the fear of suffering is worse than the actual suffering itself. To say yes to the consequences and be at peace with it is very power. Thanks for the comment.

Unduly simplifying a genuinely complicated reality is simplism.
Needlessly complicating a straightforward reality - which is done for a variety of reasons - is often a type of blameworthy denialism.

I tried to leave a comment to your comment to me, but the computer people would not allow it and I said nothing that was bad or used any bad words. I was simply talking. So I just deleted what I had written to begin with so we are on fresh ground.

No problem. Glad you made a comment the algorithm did not agree with 😀 As a full blown conspiracy theorist I believe that the algorithm is part of a plot to create an alternative universe of saccharine silliness so that only 'nice' things will be spoken but where words of truth must not be spoken.
