- Many organisers insist on traders using classic ice cream vans at their vintage & nostalgia events, rather than brand new vehicles, which is why period ice cream vans - and mobile catering conversions based on classic vans & lorries - are so popular and sought-after now. In this short video I've brought together 50+ examples of classic or vintage ice cream vans, and other old vehicles now re-purposed as mobile food & coffee vending outlets.
Some of the vehicles, for instance the Bedford CA & CF ice cream vans, started out in life in this guise, while for others it came much later. Citroen H vans are one of the most popular choices for any vendor looking to create a "period" selling vehicle, although other French offerings such as the Peugeot J7 and Renault Estafette also appear from time to time at retro shows. Other basis for ice cream & catering vans in this collection include Bedford HA, Mini, Morris PV, Rolls-Royce, Commer, Land Rover, Karrier, Austin A40 and Fordson E83W. Mobile food truck conversions can often be based on larger vehicles, such as de-commissioned fire engines. The vehicles shown date from the 1920s/1930s through to the 1980s.

This took me back to the 70's when our local ice cream van was a 1961 Bedford CA mk2 operated by Granelli's of Droylsden near Manchester. It was driven by Dave Granelli, a lovely and very funny guy, all the kids loved him, he was a right laugh! The chimes on his van played the chimes of Big Ben. I can still hear the "Cl-clack!" of that starter motor...
This video made me a bit hungry so I'm off for a bit of dinner now.
I do enjoy watching these videos because l fond out that they made a citroen H van in a long wheel base version
I've just had breakfast...now I want some ice cream...😄. I'd go for the Wall's, but it's likely changed a lot from what I remember as a lad. It was a rich yellow, almost orange colour, and such a creamy flavour. Ah!...the memories.
Amazing how many Citroen vans were in this collection. Odd thing is, while I've known about them for years, I don't remember ever seeing one on the road 🛣️.
At 5:00, agree the quirky trailed ice cream van is shown parked outside the York Art Gallery, in Exhibition Square YO1 7EW and I live 190 miles from York.
What a fascinating line up :-)
Very interesting thank you 👍
A beautiful photo of the "Diamond T", I like to tell you that in the late 1930s my dad was a chauffeur on a beautiful Diamond T coach. Of course I was not born yet, but I still have the photo. I try to find it and will publish it on your Facebook page. I hope you like it.
I have been following Mad Works Garage, who are restoring a CA ice cream van .👍
How could anyone go past the RR ice cream van, man that is special
I spy a class 47 diesel loco in the background of the "indoor" minivan.👍🙂
The LHD red bus isn't a Routemaster its an AEC Regent V by the look of the grill and bonnet. Although they did share engines and probably other bits too!
I believe the firm of Rossi's Ice Cream & Francis Rossi of Status Quo are one and the same family
Wow again,,, I need to hire a tour guide ...how do I send photos of my custom truck and autos?
where was the Commer fire truck from please? Would love to see more photos of it if there was any way possible, great video and knowledge.
Is that the pizza oven conversion? It used to be local and would appear occasionally at events in the area, but I've not seen it anywhere for years unfortunately.
@@oldclassiccarUK yes the pizza conversion. Not to worry thanks for the prompt reply Merry Christmas
