  • Released in 1995 by Domark, F1 World Championship Edition is an arcade style licenced F1 racing game on the Amiga. This game was released at very much the end of the Amiga's commercial life as a games machine.
This game is demonstrated using the Minimig core on a Mister FPGA device, which is 100% recommended for retro gaming enthusiasts who do not want to compromise on system accuracy, benefiting from 'hardware' recreation of the system, far better controller lag times as well as the ability to seamlessly switch between systems in seconds.

It took me a couple of days to get my head around it but I ended up really enjoying it, much easier to play than Vroom!

Good vid. Looks much smoother than the mega drive version. The SNES ones totally different.

Cheers! Wow, just checked out the SNES version, that is totally different. Kind of like Super Monaco GP on the Mega Drive VS the Master System version, just different games!

this is quite smooth! megadrive version has terrible framerate, after the excellent domark f1 this was a huge downgrade. too bad as the game itself would have been great...

I was always a bit disappointed with this version, especially after Vroom and the first F1 game, this one is just not quite the same.

@@HowtoRetro framerate wise? yt definitely makes it a bit smoother, just checked the megadrive version and on my CRT it is choppier than on yt :(

Hmmm there is a massive difference between Vroom and F1, the cars in Vroom are like undriveable Formula 1 cars, the handling of the cars in F1 are perfect like a 2018 Mercedes. Vroom is unplayable, F1 plays like a dream. Did you play F1 or Vroom or just watch some emulated videos on YT?

Yep I've played them all before, I had Vroom and this game back when it was first released. Vroom feels much faster and is such a hard game to control, the width of the cars in relation to the track and the speed of the game made it near impossible to master! This game was definitely an evolution of Vroom, but somehow feels technically inferior, maybe it's just the speed of Vroom that made it feels like it was a technically superior game, but you're right that it was undrivable, I never got completely to grips with it.

@@HowtoRetro I can't play this on my Amiga 1000, might be the disks or might be a 1mb Chip RAM only game vs 512 Chip+512 Fast RAM of F1, have to check on the emulator. Vroom and the original F1 by Domark are pretty much identical in framerate and speed but the difference is down to the handling. On Vroom the cars handle like cheap family hatchbacks so you can't place the cars on the track properly or make fast turns but on F1 you can place the car accurately and have much more grip around the corners/overtaking so you don't really get the same problems as Vroom. F1 is a real hidden gem of a game on both the ST and Amiga. The slower framerate of F1 Championship Edition here vs Vroom isn't really the reason for the improved playability, if anything the drop in framerate for the minor changes to visuals is a bum deal and you might as well stick with F1, especially if F1 CE is 1mb chip RAM only game as that limits you to 1990 onward Amigas only with Fatter Agnus appearing just before the A500plus/A3000 ECS official upgrade. None of them are quite as nice as Lotus II but at least the cars are a bit more realistic than F-17 Challenge where they just constantly weave left/right even round the corners, that ruins F-17 Challenge.

Bought this as i loved Vroom and then F1 (Domark) was disappointed with this, controls are worse, cars look bad when turning and don’t fit the position of turning which is off-putting, was my last Amiga disk purchase, but not a memorable one in a good way!

I totally get that, I was initially disappointed, but think the fact it had the real drivers and cars pulled me through at the time. Vroom is definitely the more polished game, I can just cope with the slightly slower pace of F1 vs Vroom though 🤣
