Kids these days don't know how to use a calculator to do scientific notation. This lesson shows how to do so using several different commonly used models.
7 Years later and this video is still helping. I'm currently a college student taking a combination class of organic and biochemistry. It's been so long since I've had to use scientific notion i forgot how to use it. I was stressing out soooo much because I was doing it wrong. Thank you so much for posting this video!!!!
Not sure if this would help, but I found a video, at mark 1:19 that goes over it. czcams.com/video/P0ktH5zfTaI/video.html Basically, there is a sign on the calculator *at least mine* that looks like (-) , use that instead of minus sign. And you will need: ( ) those things :P (I needed to figure this out too, so hope it helps you as well!).
Hi, so if you are using the ti-30xa like in the video to the left of the = button is a button +→← on top of each other and -. Click that button before hitting the exponent number. Took me a bit and I found it. It's long over due answer, but hopefully it will help the next person.
Not sure exactly what you are asking, but a positive exponent defines the place value, for example 10, 100, 1000 and so on. A negative exponent provides the decimal place: .1, .01, .001, and so on. Experiment with your calculator. That's why these scientific calculators are so helpful in actually understanding the number system. You can do a lot of practice without breaking your brain.
Doing that, your calculator will treat your scientific notation number like different numbers instead of grouping the numbers together unless you put paranthesis around them. I guess the [Exp] button is more reliable than [Shift]+[Log]
Chem teacher here...I actually like the snarky tone...got your attention didn’t it! I actually needed it for the TI 30XS my daughter left behind...I always used the lazy TI-30Xa! 😂
Thank u very much .... Today i have given a test and got 2 marks deducted cause of scientific notation ... 🙁 But Then i watched ur video and it helped me a lot, learning in online classes r really much though to understand but ur video Helped me a lot .... ❣️
TI and Casio actually had to relabel the [EXP] key as [*10^x] in the newer calculators, because they realized people didn't know what [EXP] stood for! The 'FAVORITE CALCULATOR' is a Casio fx-350TL or fx-350W or something?
as a old man who used (paper) logarithm tables, using exponents made sens in that context. on contemporary (2021) calculators you have to know about this stuff if you're dealing with very big/small numbers. but then again you should know the logarithm base ten and the arithmatic of powers. without that context i'd rather not learn Scientific Notation. anyway, with that precision, i could also use a slide rule without any disadvantages.
Hard to say since I don't know what type of calculator you are using, but generally you can take a 5th root one of two ways. There should be a button somewhere that says "X(sqrt)y" that allows you to take an arbitrary root of a number. (In your case, X = 5 for fifth root). If that doesn't make sense, try this: raise the number you want to take the fifth root of to the 1/5 power like this: 32^(1/5)...if you're doing it right that argument should produce a result of 2.
Totally cool. I found 2 slightly different ways of entering it into my Android App calculator. The starting button is "x to an unknown power". You are a great math teacher, and really know your stuff. Thank you so much for the solution to this one. I knew it had to be the inverse in some way, but did not know how to enter it until you gave the expression.
Thank you for posting this 8 years ago, for people like me to find today.
Sir you helped me out so much but I'm still about to have a mental breakdown thanks tho
I guess it’s my turn to have a mental breakdown... especially when it’s virtual learning.
@@refinedqueen2260 yeah I get that
@@refinedqueen2260 Holy shit you guys feeling the same way? I have finance this sem and I have no clue how to ise a calculator. 😭
Facts
😂😂
I like the fact that this teacher complains at the first time then tells us to bring a
Calculator.
Like BRUH WTF
So much negative from the instructor. He starts out complaining ....
Stop whining, listen and learn.
Linda doesnt teach
Well it is frustrating when no one listens so stop complaining 😒
Agree, no need for that and it makes me unhappy when teachers are so negative like that
Bro this is the best instructor ever

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yea wth this guy says "I told you to bring a calculator, I've never heard of you man" my calc just broke
Hahahahah
then go and buy one, I told you not to watch my videos without a damn calculator
It’s very unfortunate, that there are teachers like you, that speak to people, students this way.
well then why u watching dumb cheeks
If ur so mad, then go watch something else and stop leaving ur hate 😊
Watching it after 9 years and it's still working dude keep it and thank u very much🥺❣️
May god bless you and your children for generations to come!!!!
+Jhonaton Castro can you give me the solution for fifth root
+Anita Pokhrel 5th root of what?
On the scientific calculator I want to calculate root *5 but didn't have any idea
by using calculator how to calculate the root 5th ??
Anita Pokhrel
at video point 5:57. How or what button did you press on the TI-30XA to enter -3?
Lmao whats wrong with this man..... Its like his wife aint giving him......😉😂😂 he frustrated with his students
We ALL feel this frustration. As a teacher, this is dead accurate.
he just read this out loud in class
5:40 how do you make the exponent negative? (I have the TI-30Xa calculator)

I missed how to do the negative exponent on the TI. that’s the only thing I needed!
I was so confused cuz it was covered so I paused the vid but I still couldn’t find it XD
Ever figure it out? Cause I need help with that lmao 😳🤚

thankyou so much i have been trying to figure this out for an hour and a half and finally got it after watch your video.
10 years later, I'm glad you existed
Hw do u use d fx-83GT PLUS cal to solve for simultaneous equations
Don't know, sorry.
I am from India.Your teaching is very impressive.Iam wishing that you will do
Some more video s like this, which helps us in learning
Which mode did were you on ti-30xs before you input the scientific notation
How do you input a negative scientific notation to decimal notation on the Ti-84?

all of the two-line display casio models also have a second way of doing this: SHIFT LOG. it is displayed as a small "10". look for it at 2:30
+w0ttheh3ll Yes, but that's not the standard way of doing it. That's used for taking the antilogarithm.
I found that key, but it doesn't give me proper results. Perhaps I'm entering the wrong values, not sure.

poor fella nobody listens to him.
I mean I understood what I wanted but I still feel attacked
How to put power on number in casio like 8^5
Chem teacher here...I actually like the snarky tone...got your attention didn’t it! I actually needed it for the TI 30XS my daughter left behind...I always used the lazy TI-30Xa! 😂
what if you want to put a negative exponent?
I seriously cannot thank you enough!
I'm not even a minute into this and I already wish you were my teacher lol.
Thank u very much .... Today i have given a test and got 2 marks deducted cause of scientific notation ... 🙁

Preach!! Know you are not alone on this!
About to throw my old Scientific Calculator until I saw this video. Thanks I finally know how to use my very old Casio fx-82SX
This teacher can spit bars with his attitude and I’m on his side cuz his attitude
Thanks much was struggling with this ,it's so simple
no need to be condescending. just show what you know and shut up.
addisbloom I was thinking the same thing smh
thank you i was about to comment to say what u just said lol
wesmoore16 stfu
Actually his technique telling you that you wont pay attention... has got your attention right?
Moon Diet ur just mad u don’t listen and when u try u get annoyed #payattention 😊
Hey man, thank you. I was struggling with that since years. You saved my physics homework. Love ya.

Mayur I didn't know what it meant your comment just helped me figure that exp meant exponent haha thanks lol
@@mae8142 Lmao
How to get lengthy number interms of 10 power
I'm not surprised no one listens to you with that tone. Good information here - just leave your attitude for after recording next time.
Agree
Cry in another place lol
Agreed
does it matter if it is caps or na
Thank you Sir. ❤️ I do listen to you. My teacher say he won’t talk about it…
I could tell you were a high school teacher by the frustration in your voice haha
This helped a lot for my Chemistry class, thank you!
Thank you sooo much this really helped me a lot, but I am still gonna have a mental breakdown but thank you so much
Sir, you are awesome!! Thank you!!

(log(3.07)+4)-(log(6.2)-3)=6.694746686; 10^6.694746686=4951612,903. for precision i guess 4951000 is accurate enough given the values we started with.
Thank you so much sir from this helpful information ☺️
So when you're good at numbers, you don't have to worry about letters looking like aunt's nest
Thanks for the tutorial. It helped me a lot.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
It really helped me alot
You are an amazing teacher👍,I really appreciate your videos. Your passion always inspires me. Keep it up!👏👏👏
Thank you sir this was really helpfull ♥️
thank you for this video. best teacher
Thank you so much for this!!
Jesus Christ thank you so much, I was super close to breaking down with semi-correct answers!
Plss help me how to get the 0.006 pls can u vloge it
Very informative 👏👏👍
thankyou so much you helped me in a most difficult thing
I like the way he is teaching.
Thanks for the vid! Much appreciated
Also you talk the exact same way as my chemistry/physics teacher.
Thanks broo iknow how to solve thw notations
sir thank you very much you helped me a lot.
thxz i really need this
That was very helpful thank you.
Bro i have the same calculater which is your favorite calculator 😮

Thank you sir
It is useful for baignners
Wow thanks you... great success
thanks a lot! helped me on my hw
What about a ti- 30x2s those are the most popular calculator.
SMITTY It's the same as the TI in the video, except the EE button is only available via 2nd function. It's the x^-1 button. Above the 7.
But tell atleast how to avoid this divide problem
Thank u good Sir!!!
How do add 2 + 2 it very difficult
Ok which one of my current students said this?
Not me
Where were u & CZcams & the general use of the Internet when i was at school? Huh? HUH?!
Thank you boss.
