Mr. Kalashnikov, the peasant genius and former apprentice railway mechanic, actually began developing the AK47 before the STG-44 came into service. His rivals in the other small-arms design bureaus came to the idea later, after the STG-44 and after Moscow issued the design specification for them to try their hands at functioning prototypes with a view to full scale adoption by the Red Army after the war ended. But he'd been working on it for most of the war, after his early SMG prototype which had impressed the army that he'd made in the steam engine repair shop.
