Wow, brought back a lot of memories. That was before my time there. I worked there from '88-'91(big layoffs due to the luxury tax). Called back in '93. Worked as electrical/mechanical installer on 38' and 45' convertible and expresses. 40&42' MY and CMY. Until they moved all production to New Bern NC and closed the doors in Jan of '98. Built the first two 60' convertibles in HP. What an extraordinary experience with great craftsmen (and women).

After Hatteras left, my grandmother became a security guard at the building.
I was a very young kid (5) or so, i remember there being a security box that she would work during the day.
Well, after the removal of all Hatteras equipment and office equipment that office became where she stayed.
Some of the rooms off of the main lounge you see there was her bedroom, kitchen and such.
Her name was Kathryn Eleanor Sherrill.
I used to ride my bike though all of those long buildings...
Great memories, RIP Kathryn; I love you.

Nice soundtrack from Pat Metheny. Saw him play in Raleigh and in Durham.

Back when "Made in America" meant the very best of everything, and those workers in the factory liked doing what they did without having to arbitrate about it. It saddens me to think that this is all lost, that today's kids will never see such opportunities to succeed and create like Hatteras did back then. I hope and pray that we can get this kind of American enterprise back again.

If the SS Minnow was a Hatteras it would have bounced off the rocks and they wouldn't have been ship wrecked until 1978. But Jonas Grumby couldn't afford a real boat that's why it was an old lap stake Pacemaker. Probably had gas engines too.

The SS MINNOW was a Wheeler, not a Pacemaker
