Great review. I love how unbiased you are, how many nuances you point out that people would likely ask about or not even think about until they had them!
Thanks Chris, very much appreciated! I try to be as objective and unbiased as possible, it's very important to me!
This is amazing! Again, love the quality of your video's! I've looked at these devices before and thinking about buying 4 for my curtains in my livingroom. When using the HACS integration, how do the curtains get calibrated? From your phone? and how good does it work from HA. Just got rid of all my extra hubs so would love to be able to use it without their hub.
Thank you as always! 🙏 You cannot calibrate using HACS yet so you just use the SwitchBot app - but you don't need the Hub to do it so your all good there 👍
Great video. I’m interested to know if your curtains create more friction in the grommets as the close? I’m unable to close my curtains fully, as the tension on the grommets as they create a more oblique angle on the pole means they’re quite tough to fully close. Probably need a new non-metal pole, but was interested to see if you noticed a similar problem?
Great review man! Now I just need to convice my partner that we need some curtains! 😅
Thank you buddy! Haha play the "it's for security to stop people looking in" card 😂
You had me at "clamp down on my rod".
It's a firm clamp, not too tight, but just right!
Really very nice providing the python API and keeping it independent of cloud nonsense. I'll definitely keep an eye on their other products because of that. Only concern I have though is how plasticy it appears to be. After a couple of years in the sun would they become brittle? (Maybe not an issue in Scotland! 😀)
Definitely is, refreshing! And yeah probably not an issue here 😅 but something to think about!
Great vid! I didn't realise that you'd have to buy another freaking device just to say open my damn curtains. I feel like returning it now, but I've returned too many devices to amazon that they might have just won FFS. I will buy the hub... then maybe return it later lol
Thank you! Yeah it's unfortunate although I understand why because it's using Bluetooth to maximize the battery life. At least the hub isn't too expensive! Although if you are using Home Assistant then you can make it work in Google or Alexa without the hub
One thing I haven't found in these reviews is how is the manual override? You don't always want to use it ( want it done quicker for example ). Does it slide easily? Do you have to recalibrate after?
Incredible review! Looks like a review from a CZcamsr doing this for years. Very professional.
May I ask what you use to do your unboxings? The camera and stand so that you only see the table and your hands
Wow, thank you Zack, appreciate it! Very high praise indeed 🙏
All the shots in this video were just done on a tripod only, no overhead cam. Just a tripod and some careful alignment 😅
I do have a rig for overhead shots but it's not able to handle the weight of the camera I have, it's only really suitable for a phone. Hope that helps!
@@EverythingSmartHome Gotcha. I am in the same situation. My overhead doesn't work with my Camera Weight. I do have a tripod so I may try and use it and the careful alignment haha. Thanks for the answer. Really Appreciated. Love the content!
No worries, give me a shout if I can help, with my limited knowledge haha!
You too man, love your content also, keep crushing it! 👊
Great review. Would also like for you to review any competitive products as well
Thanks! I will do my best!
Will it work on telescopic curtain rod?
Great video.. question for you. What do you do if you have a really long pole over bi fold doors? Am I right in assuming that it wouldn’t work because they can’t travel over the support brackets along the length of the pole?
Hello! Thanks! According to switchbot they can go over bumps in rods, but I haven't tried it personally and your milage may vary there...not very helpful I know!
how is his loudness? Louder than electric rails?
they thought of everything. great review
Thank you! 😅
@@EverythingSmartHome please keep making videos. I can tell you put a lot of work into keeping these informative yet easy to understand. helps bridge the gap for people like myself who are moderately tech. proficient but need a little help.
Thank you buddy, very much appreciate it, means a lot 🙏 and don't you worry, I will!
I think I missed this but can you schedule the switch bot? For example having it open the curtains at 7am daily and fully close at 8pm that same night.
Hello, yes you can configure all these in the app, it has a decent scheduling system!
I just got a 4 pack, with the solar panel charging. Do I automatically need a hub?
I'm going to sync it to Alexa/and use the app.
Hey Erin, if you want to use it with the SwitchBot app and Alexa, then yes I would recommend a Hub
@@EverythingSmartHome hey, do you need a hub to use Alexa and iPhone my home? Just got some today but didn’t realize!
Hello! Yes as mentioned in the video if you want to use with Alexa you will need a hub. Hope that helps!
@@EverythingSmartHome Damn, that sucks. Thanks though!
Can you make these motion activated? I want it to open curtains for guests as they pass through archways.
Sure can if you have the hardware and software platform to do it 👍 hope that helps
You made this great high quality video but didn't even show them opening one time...only closing... 🤔. I was curious about the speed!
Does your curtain needed grommet kit? Without this kit can you operate?
I'm not sure what that is sorry but no I didn't need one for my style of curtain!
So I finally received my switchbot but am having a bunch of issues making it work. It seems my curtains are too heavy I think? Because it comes to a point where the switchbot can no longer pull the rods as the curtains are stuck. I tried using the included kit for grommet curtains but it still didnt help. I thought ordering a tape made specifically for curtains would help but it still wasnt enough. The tape was to help make the curtain rings more slick to slide easier but it still doesnt work. You have any idea what else I can do? I'm totally out of option and would love to make this work.
I’m experiencing the same problems. I’ve also ordered some grommet tape. I’m going to try to 3D print some plastic rings to go inside the grommets to make them more slick ( metal grommets on metal rods at the moment )
@@grahamwilkinson6902 if that works lmk! I would definitely buy some off you lol. I'm desperate to get this working as it's just sitting eating dust at the moment.
@@spikeyboy it seems to be the pleats are too wide and the grommets the jam… I’ll give it a go… I might even try my own take pegged on to the curtains
@@grahamwilkinson6902 please keep me updated on how it goes! Definitely make a video if it goes well lol
@@spikeyboy I have been trying something today. I am using the ‘Ezy Glide Tape’ and I did not compress the wheel as hard on to the pole and it works much better. Could be better but it is working opening and closing ! I will try the 3D parts and update when done
Is there a way to control both curtains, on a curtain rod, with a single switch bot using a thread as a hack?
There probably is if you were to use some sort of pulley system!
Does it come with a remote or is this extra and is the remote seperate from the phone
Hey Alfred, they do sell a remote yes which extra but can be programmed for different functions
How much weight of curtain it can support?
They quote 8kg/17lbs of power but I have no way if validating that
Know of any solutions for shutters? I'm not holding my breath for any 3rd party solutions.
Do you mean shutters as in blinds or shutters as in the old school shutters? I know some people have different terminology!
@@EverythingSmartHome Like the big wooden slats that have the rod attached to all the slats that allows you to change the angle. No ropes or strings.
@@RustyShackelford_ maybe some sort of actuator like these?
"HC-BetterLife Remote Control Electric Window Opener, Powerful Automatic Window Vent Opener and Motorized Window Chain Actuators (230V Motor, Wall Switch & Remote): Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home" www.amazon.co.uk/HC-BetterLife-Electric-Automatic-Motorized-Actuators/dp/B07DMS4QRL
Would like a couple of these but alas it's a curtain tieback house : (
Untie those curtains, it's worth it!! 😜
Any integration with Google home ?
Doh.. got to the part of the vid that explains it.. nvm
Haha glad you got it!
Since it's been a bit over a year, do you have any updates to share on how these are holding up? How's the Home Assistant integration coming?
