Yeah, the horror elements started to make up less of the movies as the series went on. Because the first Evil Dead movie is genuinely horrific. Evil Dead 2 alternated bonkers comedy with moments that are still genuinely disturbing, and Army of Darkness was played almost entirely for laughs, with the occasional nod towards its horror roots.

The First Evil Dead was scary. At least I used to think so when I was a kid, lol. The 2nd one was phenomenal. And then came Army of Darkness. I got a lot of laughs out of number 2 and Army. That was definitely Bruce Cambell’s role. No one else could have done it.

On the subject of the recap and how the films pick up where the others left off, it's actually possible to stitch the trilogy to together into one complete cut. If you watch Evil Dead 1 all the way through, you can pick up where you left off by starting Evil Dead 2 at the part where Ash is dragged through the woods by the evil force and is dropped into the puddle. Same can be done with Army of Darkness, just stop Evil Dead 2 as soon as the timewarp sequence ends and pick up in Army of Darkness right after the opening and the title sequence.

From what I understand Minty has it exactly right. The intention was to use clips from the first movie, but they apparently didn't have the rights to it and so they couldn't do that. So it was basically a short gist of the story from 1. That still doesn't really explain a few of the inconsistencies though. I think they definitely could've done a better job making that clear, because I always thought the same thing. Regardless though I enjoyed every single one of them.

German Fan here: The "Tanz der Teufel" Title of the Movie isn't supposed to be translated directly back to english (which would be, as you correctly titled it "Dance of the Devils"). The Title has a more figuratively meaning. The correct Translation would be "Struggle witht the Devils" or "Battle with the Devil". Yes, Tanz is Dance in english, but in this instance it is supposed to mean something along the lines of struggle, battle, scirmish.
By the Way: The full german Title for Evil Dead 2 is "Tanz der Teufel 2: Jetzt wird noch mehr getanzt" - which translates to: "Dance/Struggle with the Devils 2: Now with even more Dancing" ;)

I tried googling an example and found there's a lot of songs with the title over decades, but I really liked this one:

Raimi said that he incorporated more humor into 2 because he watched Evil Dead audiences laugh at the “horror” onscreen. So he figured the “sequel” should incorporate that reaction along with the horror aspects.

I saw the original Evil Dead when I was, maybe, 5 years old. I snuck out of my bedroom and hid behind the couch as the babysitter watched it.
I had nightmares for weeks after that, but I was absolutely hooked.
Naturally, I watched Evil Dead 2 as soon as I was able. Loved it.
Army of Darkness was a shoe in for me.

My favorite line: "Who's laughing now?"
    Comment about "Rosebud" distribution.
The word "Rosebud" had to be an homage, to the end of "Citizen Kane". Urban legend has it, that the use of the name, "Rosebud", for the sled, was, in fact, a personal dig on William Hearst, who used the word "Rosebud", to refer one of his mistress', uhhhhhhh, "body parts".

    • @drvictoria2002

And this is correct if I am not mistaken, Sam Raimi made homage to Citizen Kane and the term Rosebud uses as a mystery and all was looking for a rosebud etc, but it was a sled named rosebud all along.

Being a huge horror kid growing up, I would see the original THE EVIL DEAD on an earlier limited release midnight showing one Halloween night, my best buddy and I were both blown away. A short time later in college here in Massachusetts I would lend my own talents
freelance(animation, acting, etc.)for my teachers’/friends’ very popular Boston animation studio(known for many of their classic Mtv/Vh1 bumpers, music videos, fx, among other things, etc.). The shop master of fx was doing test shots for THE ARMY OF THE DEAD-era version of this sequel as they told me we maybe working on the project… I was sooo stoked! Sadly we were told the house was too ‘expensive’ for Raimi and co.’s sequel and we did not end up being used in any of the future production. One of the very few times I’ve cried profusely, let me tell you! :(

The biggest reason why Evil Dead 2 (as well as the first & Army Of Darkness) is spectacular is cause it just feels like two people (Bruce & Sam) just wanted to make a movie. Like two kids filming short movies with their camcorder.
