NEW Rose Pro SL Disc Review đč | The Best Entry-Level Road Bike?
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 8. 06. 2024
- The newly-released 2020 Rose Pro SL gets updates to its aluminium frameset (that looks remarkably like its made of carbon), a new lighter fork, fully internally-routed cables and a neat new integrated seat clamp.
The previous generation of the bike was universally well-liked here at BikeRadar, combining an excellent ride quality with a well-considered spec list at a great price
Matthew Loveridge takes us through the 2020 Rose SL Pro and why this is a great entry-level road bike, if not a bike every cyclist would love to have in their garage.
Is this what you'd consider entry-level? And what do you think about the changes to the new model? As always, let us know what you think in the comments! đ„

Around 7 years ago I bought my first road bike, a red Decathalon Triban 3 for ÂŁ300 which was highly rated then for an entry level road bike, I still use it daily and love it. Seeing this thumbnail of a red road bike and words 'best entry level' had me excited, but with ÂŁ1500 price tag it's far from entry level, even in rim brake guise. So for me, I wouldn't consider this entry level at all. That's just my perspective of course. Does look great though.
The tapered headtube is gone, for me the head tube is therefore a clear step backwards and looks much less modern now.
Please make a review for Avant H30-D DISC Road Bike 2021, a great value bike I think
Disc brakes only makes the price go up, with no benefit for me at all. I live in a mostly flat country, and I hardly ever have to brake. But a disc brake equiped bike is all you can get these days almost.
Always love your 'no-nonsense' videos. Definately want to see more affordable bikes if you can, everyone has to start somewhere and my 13yo lad is keen on his cycling but no richer than I.
Another great review. I first found out about the original Pro SL from your previous review ofit, and it convinced me to buy it about 18 months ago. I've thoroughly enjoyed it since, it's a fantastic bike in the low mid range budget, and especially if you don't want to commit to full carbon. You made the point in the original review that a quality aluminium frame is just as worthy, and after owning this for a while, I couldn't agree more. Quite jealous of the tidy cockpit in the new version.
Itâs red enough said đ. More sub 2k bikes would be great đ
We're glad you agree on the colour! Thanks for your suggestion, we'd like to review more bikes around this price point too đČ
I like the cable routing solution in the bar / stem / steering tube a lot. I have spent a lot of money for a bike with an fully integrated stem and bar to avoid the open cables and now Rose shows how it can be achieved with a regular stem and bar. By having a regular stem, bar and seat post, there is a lot of upgrade potential including the wheel set if the owner wishes but the base components seem to be solid already.
Great review Matthew, looks like a great bike!
Thanks for reviewing Pro SL. One of the most underrated entry level bikes in market.
Thanks for the review, Would also like reviews for next level/ purchase bike ( Interested in the Rose reveal carbon endurance range)
Thanks you so much for this awesome review.Ordered today this outstanding Bike!
another great review, well done!
Dropping a full load of knowledge, buddy :) Ordered mine today.
How have you ordered when you can't buy in the UK?
Good looking bike with very neat cable routing đđ»
What a good review for a great bike, thank you. đ
Would love to see more price friendly and medium price bikes. đ
Please more bikes in the 2000 price range. Would love to see the Orbea Orca M30 and the Giant Tcr Advanced Disc 2.
WOW đ€© what a bike !! I love that frame đ„°đ and the attention to detail is just astounding. That price đ. Great, now I want another fricken bike.
Yes this is what I need more affordable choices Iâm about to buy a new road/endurance bike and donât want to break the bank especially during this time of uncertainty. Thank you
does this mean youre going for the rim version?
I remember when Cannondale made bikes đČ with clean lines and smooth welds like this rose
Right! The welds on the CAAD13 look horrible! I can't help but wonder if there is an actual valid reason or because it is cheaper to not clean them up.
Glad I got a CAAD12
David Mansfield oh itâs a lot cheaper! Takes time to sand those welds down. Those savings are paying off stock is up almost 700% on the year.
Nice to see a manufacturer finishing the welds to make a better looking bike. I would consider an aluminum bike with finished prep work done on the welds. Seems like they used their smarts in a lot of other areas too.
I bought a Rose xeon rs two years ago, fantastic bike.
Nice review dude! I'm looking for a sweet daily driver in Seattle w discs to replace my old Major Jake. Agree w you completely on how regrettable it is that Rose douched it on the fender dropouts. Cheers.
Just bought one (rim brake version) as my training bike. I'm very happy with it's price and what it offers and I can't wait to ride it for countless hours!
Matthew Loveridge is the best. Always.
Very impressed by the cable routing. It's better than some very expensive bikes.
@ I have always assumed it must be incredibly difficult to do clean cabling but this really does look like a pretty simple solution. You can buy some really quite high end bikes from big brands with aloy of exposed cable up front.
I know that BikeRadar loves 105, but what about Tiagra? I recently put new Tiagra on an older bike and have been very pleased with the performance, especially considering the price. It's a great value as long as you're ok with 10 speed.
excellent video, thank you :)
I ordered a Pro SL Rim 105 in grey, it will arrive in a few days after waiting for 3 months,im so hyped :D
Ordered Prod SL Rim 105 in red, on first week of July. Supposed to be arrived on first week of September. Crying in niche watching these sunny days going past đ
That might be exactly what I need!
Just bought this bike used, I'm so excited to ride it!
How was ist?
Is the geometry comfortable enough for an endurance?
@BikeRadar the german TOUR Magazine tested exactly this bike and rated it as 'exorbitantly stiff', giving it perfect 1.0 marks for all 3 stiffness categories (steering head, fork lateral, and bottom bracket). You say at 7:56 it is not race bike stiff and you feel flex through the frame? So which one is it?
Red color is timeless, great video.
Also speaking of entry bikes scott speedster 10 is a great bike with same exact geometry as the addict but in aluminum.
yeah more affordable road bikes.... đ
FINAAAALY THANKS â„ïž
I got the previous version of this one in rim for just over a grand when factoring in the exchange rate at the time. Think it was the 2019 model. I still have it now and it's an absolute beast. Slightly heavy at just over 9kg but tbf I have some heavy calimas and duranos on it. I can easily tap along at 23-25mph on the flat on it and it climbs well with how stiff the frame is. Mine's going on a diet over the winter to see if I can get it down to anywhere close to 7kg. Some sub 1500g wheels and lighter finishing kit and we'll see how we get on.
LOVE that cable routing... but itâs got to be a nightmare to rout new housing!
C'mon, it just makes you stronger!
Wish there was a distributor in Australia. I would be all over one of these as a bush basher (gravel) bike
Do you know if itâs possible to mount 650b wheels on the 55 cm frame? For gravel ?
Thinking between this and an CAAD12 Disc from 2019. What is the difference in weight and the other geometry worth it. I want to do 100k+ rides regularly...
People race on this spec bikes, there are 4 groupsets under it to call them entry, 105 is golden middle, affordable, race ready and durable for years for daily rides.
I hope you review the Van rysel EDR af endurance 105 bike..
I have added Rose's Pro SL Disc 105 to my short list of bike that I am looking at. It seems like a great value and I love the cable/tube routing through the top of the head tube. However, the more I think about the cable/tube routing, the more concerned I become. If I need to replace the headset bearings down the road, this relatively simple service can become a nightmare as I will need to disconnect 2 gear cables and 2 brake tubes! Unless I'm missing something, this might be a deal breaker for me...
I've googled Matthew Loveridge's height, which is 174cm. If the bike he's reviewing is 55, this is good news. This might be a very good size, for us, guys between 174-179cm. Canyon and most of the other brands skip this size, which means I would have to go with an S-size, look like an elephant on a tricycle and kick my front wheel, or an M, with the saddle practically sitting on the frame.
I was in Rose local stire and they recommended me to get 55cm frame (im 174-175cm height, 78cm inseam), was comfortable. But online frame calc says i need 53 ;) so we have two times the same size fits to 175cm person
I have long legs đ 86cm inseam, 178cm height, but short arms and upper, is 55 frame good for me? Or 53?
@BikeRadar is the Ultegra version, especially the frame upgradeable to a Di2?
my height is 170 cm and my leg length is 77.5. rose pro sl disc 51 or 53 which one should i get?
How much does that headset cap add to the stack? At least 30mm I'd say...
The ROSE sticker is centered on one side of the bike and on the bottom on the other side. Is that normal?
Is there also a Red and White version?
Great review. Thank you
I'm actually shopping for a bike around this category. Do you think that it is better to go for Rose PRO SL rim version or rather spend a little bit more and choose something like Canyon Endurace CF 7.0?
Btw it is strange that I was not able to find any review on that Canyon anywhere. Have you tested it in past?
I have a Canyon Endurace CF 7.0, and I love it! I was worried about the durability of the carbon fiber, however I had a 34 mph crash and the frame came out unscathed! The rear wheel, rear rotor, and rear derailleur were all toast, but I had the frame thoroughly tested at a bike shop and they couldn't find any damage. I really feel like that frame would have been bent out of shape if it were aluminum.
There are video reviews of the bike here on CZcams, you should check them out. It really is a beautiful bike, and I really love the sculpted shape. My only complaint is the seat, I gave it to my friend so I could see him suffer too đ€Ł
What computer mount are you using? I just purchased an integrated carbon handlebar/stem and don't know how to mount a computer to it.
I noticed the rubber band mounting system and thought it looked promising.
I don't have a computer either, so, what computer are you using there? .
It's the basic Garmin that comes with every head unit
I think I'll get Allez elite for my first bike
Is this bike more close to the Canyon Ultimate or Endurace?
More the top end of entry level, would be really helpful to get some more info on
Thanks for your comment!

Decathlon triban rc120 there is a disc and a rimbrake version you can't go wrong with any One of Them and they.are around 500ÂŁ or less almost, really good value
@@insertname383 And if you can spare a bit more cash, the Triban RC520 is also excellent. You get Shimano 105 shifting and semihydraulic disc brakes for 850âŹ.
I don't think it's a good idea to buy low class rubbish for under 800âŹ. If I were on a budget, i would rather look for a well-maintained higher quality second-hand bike. Makes more sense really.
one thing to keep in mind: I was of the same opinion but with MTBs and got a fairly decent deal on, what turned out to be, an only fairly decent bike. it's not like a walmart bike....but it's not a high end bike either and it shows. it looks great, handles the road well, takes trails decently....but dont crash (lol) or something will break off and to replace it will cost that much more.
TL/DR Version: "you get what you pay for" applies in this case as much as it does with a car or home.
what is the widest tire size that will fit on this bike 30-32 ?
Will the rim-brake version allow 28"tires, even if Rose claims a max. fit of 25"?
I got mine yesterday (pro sl 105 rim) and put on 28mm "wintertires". Works, enough space. see my longer comment above.
How is the max user weight? I can't find info about it..
Rose makes beautiful bikes, but having to pay German VAT while ordering from the US, plus the additional 250⏠shipping, plus whatever surcharges the bank takes for making a foreign purchase really takes the steam out of it.
4.15 is the wheel straight?
What does SL stand for ??
Iâm confused about the 55 size youâre reviewing, why not the 53 for your body? Iâm about to buy Iâm 176 height and I thought the 53 was the right one
You should buy 50
Thanks for the review! I've just ordered (forbid me Father - grey instead of red...) rim version, anyone has experience with Rose sizing? Got 51 and I'm 165 cm, wondering if that's ok
iâve never ridden a rose before but iâm 166 and fit perfectly on a 51 so it should be ok
Does it really matter now? đ
@@RileyDao cheers!
@@PMGRlajhi I can sleep better at night đ
damn 1500 is entry level???
yea for the disk. the normal one costs 1200. the bike is so underrated.
@@laurenz323 on decathlon you can have a disk for 650...
@@AL197845w34832479823 but not really comparable. This is hydraulic disk. Also the components are a better quality overall. But yes, you can get a disc road bike for far Less money. But on what cost ;)
@@Mrcreateto for the same reason a 50000 euros bmw is better than a ford but it's not entry level and 90 percent of people cant understand the difference between conpononents so....
@@AL197845w34832479823 honestly mate I've had both a 400 disc brake bike from decathlon and the rim brake version of this for 1200 and they're really not in anyway comparable
Review the Canyon Endurace 6
Bought this in grey/silver (still has not received it). Choose this over the almost identical Canyon solely because of that cabel routing. The Canyon looks sloppy compared egen if a couple hundred grams lighter.
Where is the frame made? Taiwan, China, Cambodia or Vietnam?
I have long legs đ 86cm inseam, 178cm height, but short arms and upper, is 55 frame good for me? Or 53?
9.4kg without pedals?? I'm still using rim brakes. Is that the weight penalty of disc brakes? That's way too heavy!
Previous Rim brake model was 7.9 kg
Where can I buy this?
please do a video 2nd hand downhill mountain bike under $500
Let's just assume that Rose went for a fender option on this bike, wich obviously isn't really an entry level bike, how many xtra sales would that make in the UK and how much loss would they suffer in Europe? Nobody in Europe wants fenders on his road bike in Europe really.
đđ». Fender mounts are for halfords bikes
Ultegra rotors - yes, full Ultegra group-set - well... ;)
Nice bike for the money. I don't think they're available in the U.S. On rim vs. disc brakes - I'll never again buy a new bike with rim brakes. I'm 190 cm/84 kg. I feel safer riding with disc brakes, especially in the rain.
More affordable bike please đ„șđđ
A number of upgrade considerations interest us buyers, why not add a portion to your review in which you put on the ideal tires, saddle, bar tape etc on for a âhow we would spec itâ or âyour first low investments upgrades should beâ. Consumables should be considered an easy upgrade over the life of the bike, why not have it ideal from day one.
Is this a entry level? just get something like Cube Attain pro/race or even a Radon
R1 Disc Tiagra for a entry road bike as they cost from 800-1100âŹ. if you want a more gravel oriented one then the Cube Nuroad is a very interesting choice for an entry level but modern gravel bike. Tghe Rose pro sl is more than entry with its 1600-1700⏠price tag.
This bike already starts at 1199⏠with a Shimano 105 groupset and rimbrakes, just saying...
@@scotchgod8478 yeah rimbrakes.
@@Pillokun so what? Rim brakes have been doing a bloody damn good job for decades, so nothing wrong with that and better than cheap non-hydrolic rubbish disc brakes anyways.
@@scotchgod8478 sure, but those bikes except for the first bike are 200⏠cheaper and have tiagra groupsets and trp mechanical disc brakes. For an entry level bike you dont need 105 group set. If you want an entry level bike then the first cube bike for almost 800⏠is more than enough.
@@Pillokun nah, if I were on a budget, I would rather look for a well-maintained higher quality second-hand bike, makes more sense to me.
No Fender mounts is drawback? It also is not fitted with a bicycle standard, luggage rack and lights. Why? ITâS A ROAD RACE BIKE!
Endurance road first, race second.
thank god i ordered one 2 weeks ago, now the next batch is sold out agian lol
What's with bike brands & SL??
Seriously it's too much now..
Tarmac sl, Madone sl, Ămonda sl, domane sl, ribble endurance sl, giant tcr sl, wilier zero slr, boardman slr.... OMG... đ đ đĄđĄ
Canyon, as well.
It's probably an abbreviation for "super light", "superb luxury", "shiny lacquer" or "sun-riped lemon"
So... what would Hambini say about the fit of the BB....;)
Who cares?
110kg system weight is a bit low for us heavy riders :(
Unused black fender mount screws look horrible on a bike, I support Rose continuing to exclude them for those that like the clean look. I think fenders/all weather commuting capabilities should not be considered a prerequisite for reviewing sport bikes to be honest. Then itâs lights, reflectors, park tires, paneer mounts etc etc.
Do make it in 52â
Hi! What is you height?
2:39 Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Continental Europe :)
Sadly not available in our country đ„
It's so freaking weird and a rip off to pay 400-500 bucks more just for disc brakes.
yea
Price has even raised to 1749 Euros in 2021. I wonder where this is gonna end.
Whats an entry level bike if not for a entry level price?
how much is that rose bike?
1600âŹ
1500, which with pedals and water bottles full will be more than 10kg, and you say affordable?!?!?
Its RED that means its Faster.
~ÂŁ1450...NOPE. ÂŁ999 Hell YES
Get some polygon road bikes. Their MTB products are well known and well tested. But their road bikes might surprise you for their price.
No possibility for mudguards is what makes me decide on not buying this one. It rains alot where I live and I don't want to be drenched.
Disc brakes are an extra ÂŁ400 , the price of a decathlon road ( winter ) bike ! That seems excessive price over standard bike !
Problem is that you need a different frame hydraulic lines and more expensive shifters and those things all add up.
No comparison with Canyon this time?
105 is entry level? have you guys heard shimano tourney?
Nice... But heavy. Competition from Fuji weighs 8.6kg... with heavy wheels and extremely heavy seat and seatpost... Also Fuji is way cheaper...
Sorry, how much this Rose Bike ?
Fuji SPORTIF 1.3 DISC has the same price for 105 disc and weighs 9,63kg
@@OilmanMJ1984 Sportif is more upward/leisure bike... I have Roubaix (2020 model is SL-A), sells for 980eur, 8,6kg. It weighs 8kg now after 300 eur of investment. So, way cheaper and better... If I would want to spend 1500 eur from the start I would go for Scott Addict 20...
@@GarryFam on rosebikes.com is 1200 eur for non-disc and 1500 eur for disc version. Official site also reporting weight 8.5kg for a disc version. Who is wrong here, BikeRadar or official site?
@@OilmanMJ1984 Rosebikes.com is claiming 8.5kg for a disc brake version... Hm, what to believe? Frame is not particularly light, that is for sure, at 1350 grams... For example Fuji roubaix/SL-A alu frame weighs 1100g... But Rose has a lighter wheels...
