      Nadal, if not Djokovic, is the master of extended breaks, and he's done it for so long everyone has forgotten to notice, including the umpires. It's just... y'know... part of his style, his approach, his personality; like carefully arranging his bottles just so. Just a harmless quirk...

    I knew after that 2nd set something was off. Rafa had no energy and he looked like he was in pain or something similar. Dennis played great but something was wrong with rafa. Set 4 was painful. I thought it was all over. When he took a medical timeout I turned off the game. I didn't wanna watch him get defeated by injury. I honestly cannot believe he won. What a champion. But I don't think he will be able to sustain this kind of tennis for long. Australia is brutally hot. And rafa is gaining age. 2022 might as well be one of the final chances for rafa to win a slam. It hurts to watch sometimes. But Rafa will forever be in my heart. So many years of great tennis. Youre been so inspiring, and this match was just one of the many examples. Thank you rafa

    Such a complex match! The heat was extreme and Nadal's energy was totally gone. He was able to recover after the sun got off the court but it was still very painful and I think the exhaustion got Denis as well. The final 4 games of the 5th set Nadal was literally walking during Denis's serves. Nadal gambled 100% of his remanning energy on maintaining his serve plus Denis unbelievable increase of errors.

  • @James-bs3bm
    @James-bs3bm Před 2 lety +212

    This honestly couldve gone either way. In the fifth, shapo just ended up making too many errors on his end and didnt adjust to nadals huge drop in intensity. • @moviefan4life166
      @moviefan4life166 Před 2 lety +46

      Michael. That’s not true. Rafa took a bathroom break after he won the first two sets and obviously he’d be breaking his own momentum by doing so, and he took another bathroom break after the 4th set, both times to change clothes because he’s the biggest sweater on tour. It’s within the rules and everyone takes bathroom breaks to do this, let alone in 91 degrees during a 4 hour plus match. He received pills on a routine changeover and didn’t cause any delay in this match. The better player won the match. It’s a testimony to Nadal’s genius that he won the match despite being sick to his stomach. Look at the breaks Fed took to get massages before the 5th set in the AO semi and finals. Nadal is a very fair player. I’d say he and Fed very rarely have taken medical timeouts unlike Djokovic albeit Djokovic has done it a bit less as time went on. He was horrible with the breaks during much of his career.

      But some umpires do enforce it, see US Open Nadal vs Medvedev final (5th set). I think umpires are hesitant to enforce it sometimes out of fear of being booed. But I would check out Nadal’s explanation of the new rule regarding toilet breaks in his press conference.

It also made me wonder whether some of his deep return positioning in the third and fourth sets - after hugging the baseline on return had reaped dividends in the first and second sets - may have actually been a tactic to try to remain a bit cooler in the shade, as his main enemy after the first 2 sets was battling heat exhaustion.

    I actually think this win is better for rafa than a straight set victory (assuming whatever issues he has will be fixed or at least put under control for the next 2 matches). The issue came up after he was up 2 sets to none, giving him time to find his game amid the new circumstances. This also gives him a huge boost of confidence. Reminds me of Djokovic vs Fritz AO 2021
    If he's able to recover fully before the semis (and that's a big IF considering Rafa's history with injuries), that confidence level should be sky high.

    Shapovolov’s intensity is different.
    It was the intensity alone which killed Zverev in the previous match, because today, his shots were more precise as were his first and second serves. He hits every shot and serve with tremendous power and didn’t seem to lose any of it by the fifth set. His work rate is also phenomenal. He actually played BETTER against Nadal than he did Zverev. Honestly reminded me of a young Rafa with how he chased and responded to those heavy topspin forehands with high spin shots of his own.
    As for Nadal, WOW. Way to respond after the abdominal pain. Nadal’s maturity won the match as I felt Shapovolov’s intensity was at a higher level than Nadal’s by the end of the fifth set. The set’s third game was an absolute war and put Nadal in a strong position to see out the match.
    Hope Rafa wins it all and cements his status as the GOAT.
