How To Make Full Depth Epoxy Bow Ties // Using Left Over Epoxy

  • A step by step using two different methods I use to make full depth epoxy resin bow ties. This is a really unique way to prevent further splitting in wood and add a colourful flair. It's also a great project for the left over epoxy to keep it from going to waste. The colours can always be made different and using this method different shapes besides bow ties could be used.
I use a template kit as well as a Shapeoko cnc machine to show a method available to everyone. You could also cut them by hand using a scroll saw or jigsaw and chisels.

Couldn't you rout out the bowtie holes and just pour epoxy into the crack and let it fill the bow tie holes?

That would either just run out the crack or fill the entire crack with epoxy. (Very common and over done imho) Lots of people have cut bow tie shapes and filled with epoxy. The unique thing about this is the exposed crack and edge of the epoxy bow ties same as a wood one would be.

@@ToolsThatBuild Well the crack is on the underside so not gonna be visible. I was planning on filling the crack anyway, but someone else said I should do a bowtie, too, and I thought why not just cut out the bowtie shape and fill it completely along with the crack?
I would tape the back side so nothing leaks out. Looks aside, do you think this would create added strength? Any reason I shouldn't do this?

I might try a test on another piece of wood and see how it turns out. I think it could be cool.

@@andrewbland625 it’s been done lots. Essentially it’s gluing two pieces of wood together, search Instagram or Google image and lots of what your describing should come up. The tape will work fine. The debate on added strength is on going. The epoxy is strong enough as is wood in the bow tie shape but where it gets questionable is the bond to the wood from the epoxy. If it adheres good it’s fine but epoxy River tables which is a similar application have failed with high humidity or temperature swings. My method solves this but in reality if the piece is acclimated and there isn’t huge humidity changes I think it will hold long term.

@@ToolsThatBuild I haven't found anything showing someone fill a bowtie cutout with epoxy. Lots of content about filling cracks and making bowtie inserts, though.

The hand cut bow ties with sharp corners, looks much better in my opinion.

We're about to attempt some partial depth epoxy bowties. We're going for a clear glass look on a large oak table. We figure a half inch (approx 13mm) depth on a 1.5 inch (roughly 38mm) table should be good.
Only thing we're concerned about is overal tensile strength. Here's hoping it works put well.

Been done lots and there is no problem with strength the epoxy won’t let go as long as it’s bonded well to the wood. I recommend sealing the wood with a bit of epoxy prior to the actual pour. And if your looking to get good clear results ( no micro bubbles like most people “clear” has) I would recommend checking out my “casting bottles in epoxy video” or using a degassing chamber.

Very pretty. I wish they were red. Red is my favorite color. 😁

Thank you! Red could be done for sure, maybe my next ones will be red in some darker wood.

What an inefficient way of making epoxy bow ties. :)

    • @ToolsThatBuild

These bow ties are made with left over epoxy from other projects. They are repurposed waste essentially. Besides a bow tie shaped mold this is the only way to get them full depth otherwise you would just be filling a bow tie hole on the wood which isn’t the same.
