- The life of a Cambridge CompSci. I'm studying Computer Science at Queens' College Cambridge. The first week at Cambridge (second year) has been fun but disappointingly short.
Music: Ashton Manor Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)
This is the third time I am watching Jake's Cambridge vlogs from the beginning. There's just something about the quality of the vlogs and Jake's personality, as well as the beauty of Cambridge that brings me back every time.
me too!this is my fourth time!
The vlogs are of very high quality, but the series would have been even better, arguably and in my opinion, had he discussed and delved into at length the "secret drinking societies" at Cambridge, and how the Eton, Harrow, Radley and other Public School alumni factor into the social melieux at Cambridge. Everybody's heard of them, but know so very little about them. I know that Jake despises the drinking societies, but they do provide a certain extra "je ne sais quoi" to Cambridge and Oxford. Otherwise, what a truly excellent and informative Vlog series.
Great comment. I’m on a lockdown binge of Jake’s Cambridge vlogs, it must be the third or fourth time that I’ve watched some of them now! I totally agree that there is something special about these videos that in my opinion no other University vlogger has managed to capture since Jake. I can only assume that it must be Jake’s personality and natural humour (being handsome sure doesn’t hurt either!) It was interesting to hear Jake say in a more recent video that he wishes he had realised the potential of vlogging when he was in first year, and it is a shame for us that we will never see his full journey from freshers year to the end, but we can only enjoy what we have! As humble as Jake comes across, I do hope he knows how much of an impact his vlogs have had and that even years on we still enjoy re-watching his Cambridge journey.
I remember I found your vlogs during my last year of secondary school, near my GCSEs, and watching them made me really excited for uni life. That was around 6 years ago - now I'm in my second year of CompSci studies at uni, and despite now being back in Poland for university (lived in London till after my GCSEs), I'm still making the most out of the 3.5 year bachelor course. It's really a very special time in one's life and I do hope for many people to enjoy their uni time as much as you did, and as much as I am enjoying it right now!
Ok can I just say your vlogs are -so far- the most interesting vlogs I've ever watched on youtube. Thanks
honestly, this is the first video from you that I watched and there is no way not to like you. Have a nice day :)
Just started watching ur videos it's so nicely edited very nice for people interested in
cambridge life!
This has cheered me up so much! This was my fresher's week at Cam. I've been off for almost a year with illness and just spoken to my tutor about the fact I have to take another year out. Not going to lie I was a bit emotional before but this has put a smile back on my face. :)
Hey so you're in Cambridge uni?
Awesome Vlog Jake. Loved it!
wow Jake, watching your old vlog and it was so diferent. Your vlogs have been better and better.
Very excited about your London vlogs!
ikr
Aww omg ou were so young. I'm going to watch all of your vlogs again cause I just love them so much ♡
Last year I stayed in Cripps' court, which is one of the newest. Erasmus, on the older sider of college (since it's split over the river) is the other new building along with Cripps'. That's probably where I'll be staying next year. There's also a chance that I'll be living in one of the really old buildings. I'll have to wait and see. Queens' has a building from every century (I think) since it was built in 1448. This year I'm in a new-ish block, but older than Cripps and Erasmus.
Ahhh looking forward to these!! :D
I'm applying this year!
I just came back to this from your recent vlogs and you look so young haha!! :)
Watch this on 2018 and I wished I know this channel since 2013
Great vid Jake! Never disappointed.
YEAHHHH!!! FRESHERS WEEK IS ALWAYS THE BOMB!
im really scared to start uni now. omfg what societies will i join and who will ii talk to *hyperventilates*
how was it 4 years later?
Still your Cambridge vlogs are the most creative ones Jake .
Yes, drinking age is 18 here. And no, going to stick to CompSci and keep this stuff as a hobby.
congratulations! u graduated
Just took the Cambridge ENGAA so hopefully I’ll be following in your footsteps next year (not looking likely though)
Really cool little insight into Cambridge life - kudos for being brave enough to film yourself scanning Lurpak at the self checkout :P
good work Jake!
Congrats! Good vid!
How do you do that visual effect? Just sort of cut the video in various places? How much speeding up did you do?
How did you choose your college? What made you choose Queens over the others?
so to conclude cambridge students have no free time at all?
None !
It's Freshers' week!
Hey Jake, a big fan from Sydney Australia here haha !
I just visited Cambridge recently and stayed at Queens' for the night.
So I was wondering what made you choose Queens' out of all the other colleges?
Ben Passey It was kinda random because I didn't know which to choose, but I wanted one in the centre of town, on the river and with more than 2 CompScis per year, which narrowed it down a lot.
Jake Wright I want to meet you one day dude
Bless your soul, your accent is super cute :)
Jake, I'm interested in some big data. If there is an inverse relationship between a compski's programming ability and their social life then let's introduce a third dimension that dictates how brilliant they are to be good at the previous two. So brilliance is a function of social life and programming ability. I bet you'd be scoring high across all variables.
Good vlog!
hey Jake... am actually inspired with the Life style at Camb... am a 3rd year medical student at The University of Cape town in South Africa.. is it possible to change to Cambridge??
Nothing is sped up, I just cut the video up into ~10 frame slices then delete most of them.
Great video!!! I was just wondering, are there any summer camps for 16 year olds... Or any for a few years time, I can only find the Oxford ones.
I did a summer school at Cambridge a few years ago, it was through Sutton Trust. I did the UNIQ summer school at Oxford too. They were both great!
+Jake Wright Do these programs actually make your uni application stronger or is that just another myth?
+fjmcbob they just help you to understand how the university is
I'm going on a visit with school to Cambridge in September on a residential thingy but I was just wondering why you chose this university in particular? And maybe why it's a good place to study? X
Because of its reputation... Cambridge is regarded as one of the best universities in the world and I chose it over Oxford because Cambridge has a better computer science department.
Great Vlog, though. You going to minor in cinema?
What grades did you get, and any tips to get accepted at Cambridge?
may not ask for tips in order to enter university cambridge
Hey, recenty new to this channel. Why did you decide to do a 3year course? isn't 4 or 5 years better or did you just think that work experience would be worth more than more years at university?
Three years is the standard length for UK university courses. Some universities offer a year in industry/placement year, and Scottish university courses are 4 years, but otherwise they're three years. To stay longer you'd have to do a masters but I wanted to transition to working and take a break from academia.
Jake Wright ah okay I understand. I'm a French student and will be in my first year at college next year. In France the standard studies for the higher level secondary school classes is a masters (5years) so that feels weird to me ahah. I just sent my application to Irish schools but mostly in trinity dublin and the courses in computer science they have says in their website that after 3years you decide between bachelor (4 years) and masters. I suppose it's the same then? Thanks for the answer!
So I have an offer from Queens to study English next year, but I also have an offer from Leeds for the same course and I am completely stuck between the two. Do you have any advice for choosing Cambridge? (I know it's a completely different course/you have graduated but any help is useful)
Sorry for replying to an old comment but I'm curious, what did you chose?
I'm a town, not gown. You will never know samebridge!
begging rminded me of starting pokemon yellow
Your living cost per month how much
It's actually really awesome. I have to use that. haha Good video; you didn't strike me as a person who went clubbing. lol
what type of things do Cambridge ask in your interviews, do they ask about yourself or about the course you've taken.
and is having work experience compulsory to get into Cambridge
They could ask about both. I had one interview about me and my personal statement and another where I was asked Maths based CompSci questions. And no, work experience helps but it's not a requirement.
Jake Wright
Thanks so much for a really quick reply
I'm sorry, I'm about to pester you with another few questions
During your interview have you ever been asked a question where u don't know what the answer is ... and if we're to ever b in that scenario would it reflect badly if we were to ask for help or to just say that we don't know the answer
Also I'm trying to apply for a summer school placement for Engineering to both Cambridge and Oxford, and I'm trying to write a personal statement but I'm struggling on what to actually say because all my teachers r telling me to put in facts that I found out by myself (wider reading) and a whole bunch of other stuff and its really hard to cramp everything in with only a 2000 character limit. And I actually don't know what to say :(
Oh and did u do work experience?
ARGH just realised how long my comment/question is!!! :O
Thanks for your time! :)
Yeah, I didn't know the answer to some questions. Just be honest and tell them what you're thinking. It's hard to help with personal statements, maybe you could find some examples online. And yeah, I did work experience at a local software development company. Like I said though, it's not compulsory.
Thanks a lot ... u reply really quick! :)
OK I'm glad that they'd be alright with us not being able to answer some questions, otherwise I would've been put off Cambridge.
Yh I'll look for some sample Personal Statements online
Thank u very much for all your advise given over the past week :)
I want to go to Cambridge as well, however, I am actually still in my GCSEs. So what did u get for your GCSEs that enabled you to get into Cambridge? And like what are the average grade requirements to get into Cambridge for GCSE and A-Levels. Also, I was thinking to go to Medicine side so if you know any extra info on that, please tell me.
Thank you if you actually read this!! :) :]
At GCSE I got 5 A*s and 3 As -- I don't think they were very important in my application tbh, as long as they're just good in general, they don't have to be perfect. At A Level I got 4 A*s. The standard offer is A*AA but you really need to be working towards 2 or more A*s. Medicine, as I'm sure you know, is extremely competitive, so aim for the best grades possible, even at GCSE.
Yeah, I'm trying to aim for the best grades I can possibly get but do you think Bs will get me into Cambridge?
Oh and I heard that you drop one subject after yr 12 so how comes you have 4 a levels?
And Thanks for replying! :)
At A Level no, you need As and A*s; at GCSE, well obviously it's not ideal but yeah, you could still get in.
Okay thanks :) You really helped :]]
2 years on, I was just wondering how things went and what stage you're at now (uni next year or sixth form, etc)
Actually ,I like your ending.
Baby blue eyes
Hi from Russia)) cool vid)
I gather the drinking age in the UK is only 18.
Pizzaa
Are you from the Toon?
Nah he's a Mackem
You seriously look like David Tennant haha
Pizz
I gather you hate pizza ;)
lame.
***** Not really, I studied comp-sci as well and have done more than one major in it, so I don't really see your point. I'm also not saying he is lame, I am saying his video is... there's also 5 dislikes; I take it we're not entitled to our opinions? Well if the punishment is you assuming I'm jealous, LOL cool story, bro.
Ah, never wanted to study at Cambridge. Reason: A five year MD compared to 8+ years in the US is barely an MD to me; also what is Cambridge comp-sci compared to MIT? Does it feel nice to ride the coat tails of others' achievements to use against me, you must feel like a winner! ;)
All I'm saying is I'm going to say whatever I feel like saying; unless you rate to take my rights away; then again, "This is my rifle, there are many like it; but this one is mine...".
K White Well, Cambridge and MIT do small number of student exchanges every now and then for the subject I studied while I was there, and our Directors of Studies generally found that it's the MIT students that struggle when they come here, rather than the other way round. Granted the sample size is small.
In terms of the undergraduate course, UK degrees are shorter but we only study the subject we choose (in Cambridge at least) unlike US undergrad degrees so all in all we're not any less competent at the things we want to specialise in.
In terms of PhDs I do agree the US does it better, the main reason being length as you pointed out.
Lol ok.
