"When you start school, your head is full of ideas. The teacher will quickly take those ideas out of your head because they're not part of the curriculum." This might be the most insightful and heartbreakingly true statement I've ever heard.

      Teacher: Is there any questions?..
Students: (absolutely no one asks a question... Well, almost no one)
      Student: Uhm?.. I have one...
      Teacher: Yes, go on?
Student: Should we also reference this?

      Student: (Smirks back @ teacher)

plenty of people are articulate, and it can be trained if u are attracted to the subject of teaching, and narrating. i wouldn't call it a savant skill nor anything out of the ordinary.
he is surprisingly articulate for someone with his disorder. i will give him that. but being articulate is not rare.
i think his clear mindedness and ability to express his ideas in a structured manner comes from not being hindered by a lot of the social rules, ego, presumptions and so on, that most other people are struggling with.

I adore every chance to hear Daniel speak. His voice is so soothing. To refer him as a "high functioning autistic" is quite an understatement of the great beauties of his ideas and insights, and his unusual abilities to speak about important things from a wider perspective than we normally experience.
Daniel intuits so many things from numbers themselves, colored by his synesthesia. I am fascinated by his particular descriptions of his feelings about each number, including multidigit numbers. However, I suspect that his reaction to each number is quite personal, meaning that no other synesthetic savant would have those same reactions. Nonetheless, from his own idiosynchratic feelings he can achieve real mathematical answers and calculations. This suggests that there are infinite ways to arrive at mathematical answers. His brain functioning is truly inspiring and remarkable.

One of the many things that fascinate me about Daniel Tammet is that his accent
changes. I'm guessing it might have to do with who he has been
speaking to a lot lately, or what language he is communicating in day
to day, for example, if he is speaking with a German-ish accent, has
he been surrounded by and speaking to people of a Germanic language
    lately?
I've watch quite a few CZcams vids of him now,
and he often speaks in a different accent to the last one. I find
    that fascinating.

To those who say "he has accomplished nothing", I don't think he has ever claimed to have accomplished much.. But his chief accomplishment is his view of maths (and learning languages - he is also a polyglot) and the ways those subject could be taught better through a different interpretation of their meaning or relevance. He is also one of the rare Savants who, while being autistic, has trained himself to communicate to others the thought processes involved in being in that state, and that is not only an accomplishment but extremely useful to others dealing with autism.

I've always been proficient in grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. I think this might be a consequence of the singular focus in my school years: "Read as much as possible." I absorbed so much literature, that the syntax and composition of the English language became simple to me. I did get a few lessons in school (I can identify nouns and verbs and objects), but largely it was an intuitive absorption of patterns.
I could never suss out numbers, though. That's where my executive function flies out the window.

I believe that once we understand all connections in our brain and how it works, all we have to do is throw information randomly, this way we gonna use a full power of our brain and figure out things instinctively. Every one has their own Network connection so, all we need is scan our brain and customize a processing language for for every single individual.

  • @tangent272

I've been quite fortunate in that I'm *not* a natural math wiz. So I can describe that state of wholistic understanding of relationships becuase I've achieved it, but not entirely held onto it, I sort of porpose above and below that threshold. This has given me an opportunity to study and understand it somewhat.
Those who wish to make maths central need to make this wholistic understanding their primary goal. Memorisation of rules is a tool for getting there but it's not the destination.

when i see the way a good teacher gives intuition, i remember just how inadequate school teachers are.
they're so focused on finishing a lesson, they have zero empathy for someone not initiated into the high and mighty cult, no care goes into graphing, into visualizing and understanding. taking apart the machine into most essential parts, then seeing how they relate to make a whole

The reason kids, and people in general, aren't more interested in mathematics is becuase most people never achieve that difficult to describe mental place where you don't see numbers or operations any more, you just see relationships. Most people who have achieved this achieved it early and don't remember not having it, so they don't understand that it's not something everyone has and so don't understand why other people just don't "get it". The goal needs to be to help people achieve this state
