it feels like the producers realized the shows number one gripe was how annoying amber was so they toned her down for season 2. she doesn't even apologize to mark for being douche canoe in season 1. but since her only personality was grumpy and self righteous, she was left with nothing after they took those two away. they needed to replace it with a new personality or an evolved, more mature version of the previous one. so before she was frustrating on screen and now she might as well not exist.

Amber from the original comic was practically flat and one dimensonal as a character, despite that she openly accepted Mark hiding his identity from her. Now her show version started as a promise to be more than that, than became the worst character by the end of the first season, and now she's pretty similar to her comic counterpart. She's doomed to be that kind of character, no matter if it's the comics or the show. A shame really.

so the martian on earth is definitely just a martian. but when mark went to mars that martian swapped places with one of the human astronauts. so now that the sequids have an appropriate host (the astronaut) they can now link their hivemind (which makes them exponentially stronger and smarter). and since they can link their hivemind they have now taken over mars and are on their way to take over earth. the martian on earth was genuinely just a martian that wanted to leave his planet.

I loved watching the second-to-last episode of season 1, where Cecil was throwing everything he had at Nolan, just to slow him down a little and buy some time. It'll be so awesome to see him do that again, but with weapons that are actually effective.
When mark looled at his hand after he did his chop was so subtle. In the fight with the magmanites he did the chop and was going to unalive one via beheading but missed. Then he did the whole threatening in the shadowverse and followed it up with a chop. Yknow who's signature move was a chop? His dad. So him looking at his hand was him realizing how easily it could be that he is turning subtlety into his dad.
I am so glad you guys called out the 'toning down' of Amber. It is so obviously and over the top. I am almost hoping they reveal Amber was abducted or killed and was replaced by one of those Martian squid things.
Well one, you sound racist just like they do to get so stuck on Amber and every action and word that she expresses. And two, Amber was CLEARLY MAD at Mark for stringing her along and the LYING part. Amber's character wasn't changed. End of S1 shows her forgiving Mark for the lying. It was never about being Invincible, it was about Mark consistently lying to her about it.

I think theres a reason Amber changed so suddenly, Omnimans attack. Your boyfriend (well, ex at the time) getting into a world-changing, nearly fight to the death match that destroyed so much, probably put somethings in perspective. She probably had an idea of what his life was like, but that day changed literally everything for a lot of people. I just view it as that

But we, as viewers, who consume lots of media and are used to how storytelling works, can't help but recognize when writers make decisions consciously because of external forces. So it ends up feeling forced. Even if you can justify it retroactively within the context of the show, it's not a very "convincing" effort.
For people defending Amber, I have something to tell you that you need to understand about secret identities.
*_It's not just about trust. It's about having a target on your back for the rest of your life. Even after a breakup. In Invincible, there are absolutely people that would do unspeakable things to friends of friends of friends who even barely know of a superhero. Heroes don't have public identities in Invincible. That's why Todd thought Nolan blew up in a house._*
*_Knowing a secret identity means you have no one to talk to except the superhero. Once you know, you know. That doesn't go away. There's no going back. You can't vent to anyone else if you're just a human about how much it might eat away at your psyche trying to keep that a secret. You have to make sure you don't talk in your sleep which can happen if you experience a traumatic event involving that superhero and have a night terror one night. You can't get drunk otherwise you might accidentally let something slip that's important around dangerous bloodthirsty people. Worst of all, if that does happen (and the possibility is always there) then you have to make sure THEY never let anything slip along with watching yourself on top of that._*
*_The Irredeemable comic made it clear that some villains will even violently torture kids if it means getting a confession out of a secret identity. Eventually, out of the people who knew the guy's secret identity in Irredeemable, like 3 of them committed suicide because the sheer responsibility had them constantly looking over their shoulders for decades down the line._*
*_Knowing a secret identity is not something to give away if you aren't sure they can handle it. Amber was not entitled to that information._*
Amber was fine to feel insulted if she didn't know. Her waiting for Mark to confess despite her already knowing proves that she could have just broken up with him instead of the other way around. OR she could have told him right away that she knew instead of the other way around.

I think it's an underrated joke in this episode that marrying the atlantean king's widow is seen as a barbaric and outdated custom, but their replacement for it is *trial by combat* - which seems equally barbaric and outdated 😂
Obviously this is a show where a lot of trial by combat happens anyway because the main dude is a guy who punches things, but I still think it's a good punchline
i agree its a good punchline. it's also a kind of subtle joke that most customs probably seem barbaric but are replaced over time and that civilization doesn't happen all at once but in weird non connected segments at a time.

31:08 long story short, and Kirkman himself has admitted to this, they tried to make her character seem smart by knowing that he was already a hero but didn’t realize that it retroactively made her a dick. They’re just trying to make her likeable. Trust me, the story they’re setting up is good!
I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about Eve's dad. As much as people didn't like Amber's behavior during her and Mark's breakup scene and her nearly-sudden 180 in Season 2 (including yours truly), at least the writers bothered to develop her character.

Mark and Amber's relationship is such a small aspect of this show like Amber served Eve's character more than Mark's in S1. The reactions to her character have always been disproportionate to her narrative in the story, and yet the main complaints of the show end up centering how Amber could be doing more for Mark

At that point the secret identity is not a valid excuse anymore because he is clearly trying to be serious about amber, which means he had a responsibility to finally be upfront and honest with her. Amber recognizes this and decides to not grant mark the convenient "safe" when he finally does tell her after getting dumped yet again. Obviously her decision came more from a place of anger and frustration rather then rational thought, but she is still in the right.
Of course Mark technically isn't responsible for his immaturity or potential influence from Nolan. But strictly speaking he is the one who messed up.

Especially when the world saw his homicidal dad beat him half to death and just leave. While Chicago is dealing with their own mini-9/11. And you were right that Amber had unrealistic standards to heqr him out. He had to almost die before she'd talk to him. Closure was needed, not another responsibility.

Hating on a character is fine I do not care about that, but its different from hating on the writing. Especially since these are teenagers we are talking about, this is literally a coming of age story, two grown-ass women mocking a cartoon teenager, while giving the most vapid opinion on her characterization simply is cringy to me, when it's so obviously directly in response to the plot

Amber never did one thing wrong in the show. Mark was a shitty boyfriend until this season. All he did was lie be arrogant and take her for granted. She ain't know he was invincible until after the cyborg attack at the college in episode 6. She figured it out in the following weeks and when Mark unveiled it it was too late. He was an asshole for too long
